Roxen Amnesia Romania Eurovision 2021

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 39 competing songs in Eurovision 2021. Next we listen to Romania’s Roxen with her song “Amnesia”. Was it something we wanted to remember or did we find it forgettable? Read on to find out!

Roxen – “Amnesia”

“Amnesia” reviews

Calvin: I don’t know why this innocent-sounding song hits home with me. It all feels natural, authentic, and real. It may actually help that you can hear that she isn’t a native English speaker. This makes the song less polished and forces you to pay attention to what she’s singing about. And her topic of self-love almost concerns everybody while it’s not as washed out as love or being heartbroken.

Score: 9

Jonathan: I can see what Roxen was trying to do with “Amnesia”. The song attempts to build an emotional story into an understated pop song. Sadly, that emotion has yet to make any distinctive impact upon me. What’s left is a steady mid-tempo track that runs for its three minutes without giving the listener much indication of what it would like them to do while it’s playing (cry? dance? vibe?). Ultimately, there’s no real moment of pay-off at any point in the song.

Score: 5.5

Julian: Roxen is serving quality! Hearing the song first, “Amnesia” seems to be a typical pop ballad which is produced brilliantly. I love the switches between decent and present beats, I love her strong but emotionally almost-broken voice and her way of delivering it. That’s a nice base to build on. The lyrics had such an impact on me that I love “Amnesia” more every time I listen to it. Roxen speaks about depression and emotional ballast and more importantly, she speaks for those who used to be quiet! It is an important topic and Roxen has found a beautiful way to speak about it in her song.

Score: 9

Lauren: “Amnesia” brings something altogether different to the table. Musically reminiscent of Pam Rabbit’s “Get Up”, this song’s style is right up my alley, and it helps that its lyrics are actually one of the best ones of the year. If Roxen works on her pronunciation and the staging is as impactful as the music video, this could shoot for a deserved top-ten result.

Score: 9

Luis: “Amnesia” is a ballad but it’s the most dynamic of the year, with interesting beats on the bridge. Roxen’s voice fits in perfectly, and the vision shown in the music video is very promising. Romania will probably be rewarded by the juries: this is modern, Spotify-friendly and deliciously crafted. They might find more trouble in the televote: the weakest spot of this song is its memorability. Luckily, they have been drawn late in the semi-final.

Score: 8

Roxen – “Amnesia” rankings

In the Wiwi Jury we have 24 jurors but only have room for five reviews. The remaining scores are below:

Antranig: 5

Deban: 6.5

Diego: 6.5

Erdi: 8

Esma: 7.5

Jordi: 7.5

Josh: 8

Kristín: 5.5

Lucy: 8

Natalie: 8

Oliver: 2.5

Pablo: 6.5

Renske: 6.5

Robyn: 7

Ron: 5

Sebastian: 6.5

Tobias: 6

Tom: 7

William: 6.5

We have removed the highest and lowest scores prior to calculating the average. This is to remove outliers and potential bias. We have removed a low of 2.5 and a high of 9.

“Amnesia” is a song I enjoy and I like a lot while I’m listening to it, but I forget about it every time it finishes. It gives some kind of amnesia hehe. Romania should qualify but I’m afraid that if I’m not the only one with amnesia (and I see I’m not the obly one joking about the title) this song won’t place higher than a top 15 or top 20. A clever staging and a good live performance may help this entry. It certainly has the ingredients and Roxen has an intersting voice. 7.25/10 Romania closes my top 10.… Read more »

This is honestly one of my favourite ballads this year – which took me by surprise, because I did not much like her song last year. There is something about the chorus that is both tentative and soaring and so poignantly captures the more manic aspects of depression. In its stripped-down version, it is also such a perfect match to the unique quality of her voice – I can’t imagine anyone else covering it and doing it better, and that is a huge plus in my book.

This is genuinely too low. I feel like this is very stylistic indeed but in a way people appreciates. The lyrics are deep and the instrumental really fits the vibe because it sounds mysterious and magical. The music video really conveys the message and I wish they could keep that choreo in the live performance, it tells the story really well. It could be a dark horse if staged well (I think it would be). Roxen’s voice is also great so I really think this deserves a higher score but, you know, everyone has a taste.

I really like it! It’s fresh and interesting and the tempo stands out this year for me. The lyrics are nice too. It’s in my 11th place. I like it better than last year’s. I really hated the pun in the chorus. 😀

I’ve said some harsh words about “Alcohol You” in the past, but I’m ready to forget it with “Amnesia”. Roxen got off the high horse of her previous entry and delivered a strong, confident package with an equally poignant message. Although it’s not the first time that a Eurovision entry tells us to love ourselves, here it sounds heartfelt and original, not at all like a dreadful PSA it could have easily turned into. This is an improvement in every aspect – the hook is ironically much more memorable, Roxen’s vocals are more impressive, the lyrics deeper and more stirring.… Read more »

I actually thought this song would score slightly higher than that. A few weeks back i had it as a certain qualifier from semi 1 but now im not so sure. Anyway its in my top 5 and i really hope she makes the final. Infact 3 of the songs i would love in the final, Romania, Belgium and Ireland are all in danger in this semi. I think im going to be disappointed!!!

I think I understand now what my personal issue is with the song. The melody sticks in my head and repeats and repeats itself and it seems to not be “my melody” line because I detected that it annoys me more than giving me pleasure. So this comment is not about the quality of the song but a personal taste or feeling.

I don’t want people to get me wrong – I do like the song and would rate it most probably in the Top 12, even maybe Top 10. But some slight criticism. Apart from the Billie Eilish vibes and overtones, I can’t help comparing Roxen to Loreen. The hair, the movement, the act, even the clothes are an almost exact copy of the Swedish singer. Apart from that, the use of auto-tune takes away from the merit of the singing as it does not allow for the real vocals of the singer. Is auto-tune allowed in the live performances if… Read more »

I would partially agree with downvoted commentator below. Roxen uses Billie Eilish vibe. Also, I would not say that she’s a bad copycat. Her voice is better (BE whispers instead of singing , sorry). Her lyrics are stronger (BE texts are awfully primitive). And she could have good results, cuz’ dark-pop is trendy now. I’m not surprised or satisfied by her song, but it’s still listenable and unannoying. 6.5/10 for me.

Billie Eilish being successful is not only the product of Billie Eilish, but dozens of people behind her, her music, marketing, promotion and localisation (it’s still way, way easier for a US artist to break through to the mainstream than a Romanian one).

It turned out that the only of my biggest favorites that haven’t got a positive review coming from you was Barbara. But that’s OK, because I’m know I’m right about it. 😉 I agree that “Amnesia” is possibly the most contemporary of 2021’s class. I still have some hope that this can be the one the fandom and bookies are sleeping on. At least the juries should give the push it deserves. The problem is the juries are always leaving some of my favorites behind.

No sir, I was right about 2018 too. 😛 But in both cases, I don’t think you were criticizing the quality of the acts and the songs, it’s just that you follow closely the more urban and vibrant French contemporary scene and expect it to be represented in Eurovision. I would also like to see their Madames (in this case, without a Monsieur, though I believe the duo can deliver somethings more to your taste if they decide to try again) and Mahmoods getting there eventually. Actually, I think your favorite that got a less kind review from me was… Read more »

Madame Monsieur was simply my winner, that’s why I still think I’m right. 😀 But I’ve never been extremely confident about how it would do. Not just because it wasn’t the kind of music that normally wins, but also for its subject, many people were attacking the song for this reason. But I was expecting a top 10, so the result was disappointing. I think Barbara has a much better shot this time. Anyway, the result hasn’t changed my mind about “Mercy”, as “Voilà” flopping won’t change my mind about it. In that sense, I was just joking with the… Read more »

I actually like all of your favorites. Manizha, Go_A, Roxen and The Roop are in my highlighted top 6, along with Barbara and Maneskin. While Victoria, Jeangu, Lesley, Montaigne and Benny are in the second tier, with Gjon being a separation between those groups (I’ll explain why tomorrow). Albina is a little behind, but as you know already, it’s more because of how the track was produced than anything else. Semi 2 will probably be a calm one for me (Benny is the only one at risk, the others I like there feel pretty safe). But semi 1 is a… Read more »

The thing that makes me concerned about Benny is the running order, I’m under the impression that rarely the 1st half of a semi has more qualifiers than the 2nd and that’s what happens here, while the 2nd half has basically Switzerland, Bulgaria and Finland as probable heavyhitters. Malta is a lock, I can’t see a scenario where they don’t make to the final, the frontrunner stamp is already a strong push. Maybe the hype won’t give the result they want, but I don’t believe in a complete flop. Though I like Tusse and don’t want him getting the same… Read more »

It wasn’t love at first listen, but then I watched the video, everything clicked and I got hooked. There’s something so delicate about how it’s written, performed and produced. I love how the words and the melody are having a dance and are perfectly matched to convey its message. And the subtle growing beat amplifying the tension was a great idea. My only criticism is the use of auto-tune. Roxen doesn’t need it and it can get in the way of her accent. I hope they find a way to reproduce the vibe of the video with staging. 9/10

Alcohol You was my winner 1 last year. I thought it was magical, creative and fresh. I never saw anyone do what Roxen did, song and visuals wise. Even though Amnesia isn’t as impactful for me, it still stands out and Roxen is a good artist for reinventing herself while keeping her own artistic style. I’m a fan and I hope Amnesia will surprise. The music video gave me high hopes for the staging.

This deserved a bit more I think.
The sound is current , the message is relevant , though “self-love amnesia” is a weird phrasing. This is one of the songs I would listen to outside the Eurovision context. Her vocal tone is also quite different and stands out.

Her styling in the music video though made Billie comparisons obvious. She needs to be a bit more dynamic in her performances than she was in the NF last year. If she does do that , this could contend for a Top 5-10. Should qualify nonetheless.

I much prefer Roxen’s attempt this year rather than last year. I feel like she have found her voice and her identity. The song is great though probably not something that I would listen to outside of Eurovision. I talked about how Finland’s sounded like something I would’ve listened to when I was struggling in school, and Romania’s is the song I *wish* existed when I was in school. ROMANIA – Roxen is a talented young artist who knows how to create a dreamy atmosphere. Amnesia is another well crafted, introspective song, which digs deep into the subject. It’s an empowerment entry meant for everyone, while still feeling personal to her. I believe that is the key in making a strong message song. The lyrics are straightforward, but deep, and they flow well with the melody. The instrumentation manages to be both cozy and eerie, reflecting the internal struggles depicted in the lyrics. 20. Romania – Roxen – Amnesia – 6.5/10 – returning after such a dramatic and intense song as Alcohol You was always going to be a difficult ask and unfortunately this feels like an alcohol-free beer. Amnesia’s taste is similar but the powerful kick is missing. There is not the same rush, the same uncontrollable drug pulsing through my veins as when I was listening to Roxen’s effort last year. See i like both songs I don’t get why people have to constantly talk down the Irish entry, its actually quite disrespectful.

Even if you don’t like the Irish entry or you prefer Romania’s, just say it without being insulting all the time.

It is my 8th place 9/10
The song is so good and enjoyable to listen to. Amnesia will surprise on the stage and I am sure Roxen will deliver the song.
