Victoria Growing Up Is Getting Old Eurovision 2021 Bulgaria

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 39 competing songs in Eurovision 2021. Next we turn to Bulgaria where VICTORIA has “Growing Up Is Getting Old”. Did it make us want to celebrate the ageing process? Read on to find out!

VICTORIA – “Growing Up Is Getting Old”

“Growing Up Is Getting Old” reviews

Jordi: “Growing up is getting old” is deep in meaning, magic in feeling. This song flows softly but exquisitely with an orchestrated melody and tender strings. While speaking about living with mental illneses, VICTORIA’s voice feels like a hug of comprehension, hope and strength. The message behind the song is really inspiring and relatable, and overall, VICTORIA manages to make nostalgia sound on-trend. Knowing that she is a captivating performer, I am sure this will reach many. The song however, unfolds a bit too slowly for me, but I am certain that this will grow on stage.

Score: 7.5

Natalie: I’ve made no secret of my love for VICTORIA’s music. I kinda love any woman who isn’t afraid to make music unashamedly about her dark thoughts. And this song is just… intelligent, immaculate, perfect. As a sufferer of intense mental health issues myself, she just nails it. She is amazing at describing not just how painful depression is, but how lonely, helpless and boring it feels. Atop a beautiful orchestral production, her voice hits me profoundly to my core. I know that my feelings aren’t shared by most of the fandom, but this is song that I know I’ll always hold this song close to my heart like very few other songs I’ve ever heard before.

Score: 10

Ron: If you read my review last year about “Tears Getting Sober”, you might feel a Déjà-vu while reading this review now. While I do appreciate a lot of things about VICTORIA as an artist and a singer, her style of songs are simply not the kind of music I listen to. “Growing Up is Getting Old” is a beautiful ballad with a unique voice and some really touching lyrics, but it’s just not my cup of tea. I understand what others find in it and the great message in it, but for me, It’s just a nice song but not among the songs I would like to listen to one more time. Who knows, maybe the staging in Rotterdam will change my mind.

Score: 4.5

Sebastian: With pervading ticks of a clock throughout, “Growing Up Is Getting Old” is a beautifully reflective masterpiece and a stunning moment in time in what will be a very full list of songs in the competitionIn a year where no doubt many songs are influenced by the new Covid-19 world, “Growing Up Is Getting Old” is an exasperated but realistic take on what many other countries’ artists are trying to turn into a song-and-dance. VICTORIA is not in the mood to celebrate, and I’m here for it.  I also applaud the clever play on words when the words ‘growing’ and ‘getting’ are interchanged throughout the song.

Score: 10

William: Like any good storyteller, VICTORIA doesn’t rush her exposition. She takes her time with “Growing Up Is Getting Old” — literally opening with the heavy sound of a ticking clock. The song slowly and carefully warms up, layering nostalgia and tenderness over strings and piano. As Victoria comes to terms with the relentlessness of time, expressed through that delicate and distinct voice, her trickle of emotion becomes a flood, delivering one of the biggest musical pay-offs of the year. This song may be a slow burn, but it definitely ignites, giving us an “it” moment worthy of the win. “I’ve never understood how so much can fit in little me,” VICTORIA sings. In these three minutes, she proves that she contains multitudes.

Score: 10

BULGARIA – Victoria is an artist who knows how to craft a magical atmosphere and deliver a meaningful message. Highlighting emotional struggles while aging in an ever-changing world feels very relatable. It feels very personal to her, but I believe it can touch hearts and minds of people from different age groups and backgrounds. We are all struggling to survive, and as of lately, both internal and external reasons make us doubt that we are capable of doing so. It starts gently, and the instrumental adds subtle layers with each new verse. Accompanied by an elegant orchestration and her beautiful… Read more »

I love Victoria as a singer. Her vocals are delicate, soft, poignant even and can evoke so much emotion. I find it stupid when people come singers to other singers. So what if the vocals are similar? You don’t choose your voice. It is given to you by nature and there is nothing one can do about it. There are many famous international singers whose voices can be said to be similar. As to Victoria’s song it is equally delicate and poignant like her voice. It is a beautiful composition. But, yes for me there is a but, the song… Read more »

originally her vocals don’t sound like the billie, i think she was inspired but billie to change up her style a little bit. what bothers me is that people are saying that she is “copying” billie eilish and has no originality in music. her style is of course inspired by billie but her music is different. billie never wrote a song that sounds like guigo and although tears getting sober does sound somewhat similar to some of billie’s work it’s still her own lyrics and melody and ppl still enjoyed that so i dont get why they are being so… Read more »

“Growing Up Is Getting Old” was my favourite among the bunch of songs proposed but I think it is a step back from last year. The result will depend largely on the performance; an intimistic and nostalgic performance may connect with the audience and evokes some chilhood memories. If Victoria is able to do that Bulgaria may be fighting for a top 10 place. If not, it may be boring and ends up flopping and falling out of the top 15. 7.25/10 Bulgaria makes it into my top 10. 2. Ireland (8.25) 3. France (8) 4. Lithuania (7.75) 5. Malta… Read more »

There’s so much good stuff in this song – Victoria’s mysteriously inviting voice, a tastefully portrayed theme of growth and self-discovery, moments of intense emotion and gentle reflection. The orchestral touch was a clever addition, though to me the ultimate climax lacks the necessary punch, being just on the threshold of grandeur. I’m also very fond of the lyrics (I love the quintessential “ocean of emotions” metaphor, and the final a cappella stanza is a brilliant riposte to the thematic conflict), but I wish the song could go on for a little longer so that it could paint the full… Read more »

I’ve seen it in so many Wiwi Jury articles, but if you have a different opinion than the majority, you’re likely to get down-vote after down-vote. Been reading some comments that are just fans explaining why they don’t like a song and they receive so many down-votes, even when the comment isn’t actually rude.

I love Victoria’s voice. It’s a warm blanket but at the same time it’s like she’s hiding something dark behind all the sweetness. The verses do a good job showcasing this quality and the overflow of feeling she describes is pretty relatable. I’m not a big fan of the chorus though. Neither as a conclusion for the lyrics or as a climax, playing the old “background track getting louder” card. But it’s super well produced and maybe the staging will help by pulling some emotional strings. 8/10

Fun fact: this song was one of the entries that she concidered to go with in 2020.

In a way, it lost to the song from last year and I can understand that, this isn’t catching the same feeling. I wish she would have chosen any other song from the six possible entries she was offering this year, since all of the others were more popular.

My winner of 2020 and 2021 is Bulgaria. I really love Guigo. The song, melody, the instrumental and her voice is so beauitful. The lyrics and the message are also strong. I hope Victoria and Bulgaria will do very well in Rotterdam and will wish her good luck!

22. Bulgaria – Victoria – Growing Up is Getting Old – 6.5/10 – Victoria is hampered by having to repeat such an emotional song as Tears Getting Sober and for me this effort does not reach the intense heights of last year. There is clever wordplay in the lyrical content but what felt raw and deep last year unfortunately feels more superficial for me this time. The dreamy production from last year now feels sleepy. I don’t really connect with the central message of growing up is getting old, there is not enough of an exploration or explanation of why… Read more »

That’s quite interesting. I would like to say though, in the last 5 esc’s Malta have suffered at the hands of the televote. In 2014 Malta reached the final but got a considerably lower televote score than their jury score. In 2015 they didn’t qualify because of the televote, jurors put them through. In 2016, they reached the final but did much better on the jury vote. In 2017 didn’t qualify because of the televote. In 2018, jurors put Malta 5th and televoters put her last. In 2019, same as 2016 and 2014 Obviously individual songs can get different results… Read more »

I believe that Malta will get a decent televote, as Je me casse is quite catchy and vibrant. I think that many people will be drawn by this 20s dance sound. I expect Malta’s televote to be comparably higher then any of their recent ones. Still, I don’t expect them to win the televote. They will likely win the juries or at least finish in their top two. However, I feel like the televote will place most or all of these ahead – France, Switzerland, Lithuania, Finland, Iceland, Italy, perhaps even San Marino. I agree with you here, but I would add Russia to the list of televoting top 10, possibly even Ukraine. I strongly believe San Marino may have a less strong televote score than what people expect. I believe Lithuania won’t be as high as people expect, but I don’t see The Roop getting out of top 10. Malta, France, Switzerland, Finland, Iceland and Italy are definitely going to be in top 10 with the public.

I expected these results as I read some articles about the EuroJury voting and Malta was the country who got most top 10s with the juries, followed by Switzerland and France. Iceland situation was expectable, since last year it won EuroJury only thanks to the jury.
For Belgium, I really didn’t see that coming… it was like 29th with the juries, 12th or 13th among the songs in the semi final, but online voting put them 7th, giving them a low but respectable 23rd place overall. Same destiny Eugent had in 2018, I really see top 15 potential again here.

The constant image of water that keeps appearing in the song (“ocean”, “flow”, “waters”) symbolizing the passing of time is spot on. Let the downvotes begin when someone have a different opinion..

This song is the most boring thing I ever heard in Eurovision history so far and a total jawn moment for me.. I just simply doesn’t touch me at all as the others feel about it..

Where she delivers is her vocal ability, but for everything else is a “No” from me.. Maybe she will score with this one with the juries, but with televote she will struggle a lot..

I stopped reading when you talked about Billie Eilish.

Jees, there is no legal agreement that indie pop (and a mix of other various pop styles) should be used only by Billie Eilish? Let’s be serious.

There is a huge number of songs. Many of them have huge similarities because many artists get inspired by someone else. But this doesn’t mean that they copy that artist. If none was going to get inspired by other artists, music would have stopped existing.

That’s why we should not judge the other songs in comparsion to other similar

For me, there is big difference between inspiration and imitation. I can say that , for example, Nine Inch Nails is inspired by Throbbing gristle, David Bowie, Cabaret Voltaire and , maybe, Soft Cell. Do you see how much artists I can name? That’s because the personal style of NIN exists. What artists did inspire Victoria? Billie Eilish and perhaps (for me, a big perhaps) Agnes Obel. Can you name somebody else? That’s because her style isn’t her at all.

I really love this and I don’t get the hate because it was chosen over the BIG fan favorites – Imaginary Friend and Ugly Cry. I think this is really sensitive, intimate and it feels like a moment. As for Victoria’s song. Last year she had my favourite song of the year and she could be in my top 5 at least if she had chosen ”Ugly Cry”, the song of her I fell in love this year. However, ”Growing up is getting old” is a very beautiful and calm song. It doesn’t have winner vibes, in comparsion to last year, but she can do well. 5) Ukraine
6) Norway

Things right now are no clear so I’ll wait for 1 day to see some rehearsals to have a safer opinion. Because based on studio versions, from these 6, I see Norway, Belgium and one from the other 4 (the one that will be robbed by ”televoters” to stay in the semi)

This is beautiful, and it’s my 4th favourite. It might be too good for Eurovision, haha. If you follow the bass line, it is almost a passacaglia if you ignore the variants in the Verse endings. The emotion is driven by the simplicity of the wavy melody juxtaposed against that descending bass line and some gorgeous clashing harmonies. The icing on the cake is Victoria’s sweet voice, pitched just a little under the notes so as to sound suitably depressed and not too awake. But I would be surprised if this won, as ultimately it is very slow.

Ha, I know exactly what you mean—it’s a stylish and highly polished entry, very carefully crafted, but staging it for a Eurovision performance and a televoting audience will be the key to its success on the night. As it stands, it’s 3rd favourite for me. Great review Purple 🙂

This has totally gone let’s please the jury mode. This was not in my Top half of Victoria’s song choices. She is a good vocalist and she will do well with juries . The song was chosen keeping staging potential in mind. We will have to see if they infact managed to create an intriguing moment cause the studio track is a bit lacking in terms of immediately. I’ve already mentioned non-musical jarring words like “tetris , anxiety, nervous system” which turn me off. Also the bad PR stunt they played of having already made the choice yet asking for… Read more »

Too low score. This song deserves more than 7.09 top 10 no doubt.

Underrated! ”Growing Up Is Getting Old” is meaningful song with beatiful music. VICTORIA is amazing singer. Her live performance is just WOW! 10/10
I can’t wait to see her on the big stage! She is my winner and I’ll vote for her! Good luck girl!

Don’t understand the hate that this gets. Victoria is a beautiful stunning performer. It takes a lot, and I mean a lot to make me feel things lol (I’ve honestly been called cold before). But when I heard Growing Up Is Getting Old, heard those words and saw that video that basically summed up everyone’s vibe of the last year, I honestly felt my eyes well up. It’s such a beautiful stroke of genius and the composition is honestly beautiful. Close your eyes, listen to the song and imagine it being performed with a large orchestra and choir. It’s mesmerising.… Read more »

At first I was absolutely not a fan. Probably a part of me was quite sour about Imaginary Friend being superior. But recently, I’ve been thinking, how much this can elevate with good staging. Knowing that Bulgaria in 2016, 2017 and 2018 had done quite nicely with staging, there is good hope for this. I hope this will keep growing on me because I do want to love as many songs as I can

Growing up is getting old score 9/10 Wow this song honestly, I wasn’t expecting it. When I heard the songs in the national selection, this was one I didn’t pay a lot of attention to. I didn’t think it was bad, but I thought there were better songs in her ep that could’ve gone to esc. However, when that revamp/music video came out, my opinion changed on the song. I found it very nostalgic, emotional and gentle to listen to. For me personally speaking, the moment where Victoria goes into the starry area and hugs the little girl brought tears… Read more »

You can disagree with me, that’s completely fine, but down voting because you’re salty that someone has a different opinion to you and not commenting is honestly just childish.

this deserves higher. the song is so beautiful and feels so warm not to mention the amazing buildup. i really feel like if they stage this right and that part at the end of the song has a MOMENT on stage this has a chance of winning the whole contest

one thing i’m scared of though it that it takes a while to reach that climax. i just hope people at home don’t view this as boring

That’s the whole point of the downvote

People choosing to get salty about the downvotes is childish in fact

Well if someone expresses an opinion and then someone doesn’t agree with it, I would understand down voting and expressing your opinion.

However, down voting because you’re salty over someone’s opinion and not bothering to actually comment, yes, that is childish.

As I mentioned before, disagree with me if you want, idm but down voting for the sake of it and not offering an explanation, like we could have an insightful discussion and discuss pros and cons.

26) Bulgaria –

Don’t get me wrong I love Victoria, but this song really doesn’t do much for me. I can’t tell you any of the words up until the climax, which is very slow to get to. I enjoyed the theatric/cinematic feel of Tears Getting Sober, and this one doesn’t leave as much as an impact on me. I think during the selection period there were much better choices which would’ve been higher in my ranking if chosen, so 26th is as high as I’ll go with this song. 6/10

But in this case it actually means “Growing up is getting boring” or “Growing up is getting exhausting” and not that you are literally getting older, so you can’t really compare it with your examples.

I haven’t been writing reviews lately due to a lot of work I have at uni but I will take my time to write a review on this one and update my rankings. Bulgaria is honestly one of the best countries at esc and I don’t care that they use foreign song-writers at least they know how to make great music and if you plan to use foreign talent do it as Bulgaria does and not in a France 2020-, Spain 2020-, Germany 2019 – way. This is my number 1. this year. It’s modern, it’s timeless, it’s well-produced, it’s… Read more »

5th place: Bulgaria: I like this entry more than “Tears are Getting Sober”. I believe it holds an even greater message and the music video also presents a story that’s captivating. The music and melody are magical and you can easily get lost in your own thoughts while listening. I believe Bulgaria can do really good if they stage the song nicely.

This grew on me over time. I still don’t think it’s winner-worthy, but at least I get what people see in this now. I’d give this a 6.5 or so
