North Macedonia Vasil First Rehearsal Eurovision 2021

North Macedonia’s Vasil has taken to the stage inside Ahoy Rotterdam for his first rehearsal of Eurovision 2021. And he’s bringing all sorts of tricks to the Eurovision stage.

North Macedonia’s Vasil “Here I Stand” — Eurovision 2021 first rehearsal

Oliver: The opening is quite powerful, but this loses steam about halfway through. Vasil is alone on stage, half-lit from the side. It’s very Phantom of The Opera. His heart glows golden, and the gold colours move through his veins to light up his body as he sings. Before the final chorus, he rips off his shirt to reveal a Dotter-esque disco ball chestplate. There’s some really interesting ideas but overall feels quite messy and disjointed. Not the best first rehearsal for North Macedonia. Still, Vasil looked really happy to finally be on the Rotterdam stage.

Padraig: It’s as if someone was given the “Bulletproof” staging, broke it apart and reconstructed it just enough to avoid being a copy and paste. Of course, most Europeans won’t have witnessed the Swede’s Melodifestivalen performance, so that comparison won’t be top of their minds. However, the whole thing feels somewhat disjointed. We go from darkness into light. There’s a beating heart that grows like Jamala’s tree. Some stardust whizzing around Vasil’s shoulder. And just a few minutes after Australia’s Montaigne asks audiences to take of their “cloaks”, Vasil duly obliges by whipping off his cape to reveal a disco-ball inspired shirt. As for the performance, Vasil appeared to be saving his vocals for later in the week. We didn’t hear anything spectacular today.

But that was an idea from Dotter, I had wished so much that Dotter would win that year

Ok what is the next copy paste act? Will we see the hamster wheel again?

Is this by any chance staged by SJB? If not, then I fear that the pro-Swedish juries might downrate this for not being ‘innovative’ enough. That was one of the downfalls for Russia’s Sergey in 2016 because he took so many ideas from other NF artists on the same year. Also in 2014, Armenia and Sweden downrated each other because their artists had similar lighting concepts on their stagings.

Why do you feel juries would act like dictators. That only works in dictatorships

All those comments mentioning Dotter…
Am I the only one remembering Raiven? That queen deserved more, Zazarim was a good song and time proves that this staging idea was perfect.

I agree with you for the most part. I just don’t think they were aiming at the Euro fandom for votes, I think that they liked Dotter’s staging/idea and took advantage of the fact she didn’t get the chance to showcase it on the Eurovision stage, and now they want to wow and get the votes of the “average/clueless” Eurovision viewer. Personally, as Eurofan, I’m put off by the lack of originality, so despite the fact that I think Vasil is a wonderful singer and person, I will not vote for this song (not to mention the fact that I’m… Read more »

I love Vasil, he is a lovely guy and really talented.

BUT the song does not stand out/ Staging looks polished but the ending is so cringy (the disco t-shirt and the dotter effect).

I respect this guy so much. He has faced a whole lot of negativity. He stands alone on the stage, his song is actually very powerful, it might not be a genre i like but it would be a massive hit in any west end show. As a performer also he has been incredibly brave and open. I really wish him luck and that the hater just go do one with their closed minds. To be honest I don’t remember Dotters staging much in bulletproof. (I am a fan of her work but bulletproof was never for me). Why not… Read more »

From what I’ve heard doctors 2020 bulletproof theatrics was a copy of something from Slovenia in 2017. Either way I highly doubt this was new when Dotter did it.

The song may not be the most original, but Vasil deserves more credit than he is being given, having just come out and realising that he will not be able to stay in his home country now that he has made that announcement, I would guess he really struggling to cope with enormity of the situation. cut the guy some slack !!

Of course, opinions are subjective, but it’s like the post and the video are talking about different rehearsals. Based on the pics and video, I’m leaning more towards what Oliver and Padraig have seen.

No hate but perhaps there will be some backlash similar to Moldova in 2019 when they brought back Kseniya Simonova who did Ukraine 2011.

Dotter bulletproof who?

Wiwi was praising this but the truth is that it’s a kitschy mess that starts well and then finishes off as Dotter in Melfest. Very mixed feelings. It feels like he’s going to sing a disco song at the end or go to a gay bar after work.

Great voice nonetheless.

He will probably be the last in semi-final 1. Not because the entry is terrible, it’s just though semi and someone must be last.

I think it’s more because of them sending songs in similar genres over the last decade. A lot of people want to see something different from Sweden.
