The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 39 competing songs in Eurovision 2021. Finally, we head to Switzerland where Gjon’s Tears has “Tout l’univers”. Were we feeling the universal spirit? Read on to find out!

Gjon’s Tears – “Tout l’univers”

“Tout l’univers” reviews

Julian: This year, I’m giving my 10 points to Switzerland with their talented singer Gjon’s Tears. When I first heard “Tout l’univers” my mind definitely went through the universe after hearing his beautiful angelic voice and the emotions in it. This song has a cinematic quality and could play in movies like Interstellar or Inception. Switzerland proved in 2019 that they can get staging right and if they will again in Rotterdam, I see Gjon’s Tears in first place!

Score: 10

Natalie: I’ve not been as wild about Gjon’s Tears as everyone else has, to be honest. I respect the immense level of passion and emotion he puts into his singing, and the soaring nature of the music. But I dunno… it’s not hitting me as hard as the other songs this year. It’s not because I don’t want it to, I love his music video and I love how the song manages to effortlessly be powerful, loud and delicate all at the same time. I dunno… it feels a bit contrived and overly sentimental to me, I guess. Still, if we did get another non-English song winning, I wouldn’t complain at all.

Score: 7.5

Oliver: Gjon’s Tears would win Oscars and Grammys if “Tout l’univers” was on the soundtrack of an epic fantasy movie. There’s a great cinematic atmosphere, the composition is brilliant and Gjon’s vocals are strong as ever. But as a song, there’s something missing. It feels somewhat inaccessible, with little in the way of instantly grabbing audience attention. Worryingly, the music video foreshadows bland, overdone staging — a picturesque purple-black galaxy backdrop, that blossoms and grows more intense as the song develops. Up the ante there, and this will stand out from the crowd. Otherwise, viewers might not respond. Based purely on musicality, Switzerland deserves to do well this year. Victory, however, is uncertain.

Score: 6.5

Pablo: Sublime. “Tout L’univers” showcases Gjon’s Tears at his best. Possibly the most arresting ballad in the mix, the epic instrumentals hark of Woodkid, one of my all-time favourites in the French music scene, while Gjon makes those high notes sound as effortless as they are crisp, clean and pretty much pitch-perfect. With a tender first half that grows into an explosive cinematic flair, this song exudes class. Switzerland didn’t show to just play the game, they want to taste the gold once more, and if they do with this, it’ll be extremely well deserved.

Score: 9

Robyn: I love everything that is going on here. “Tout l’univers” creates so many moments of stillness and emotion as Gjon takes us on his journey. Having French lyrics might seem like a weak point — not everyone parle français. However, this is a case where the emotion of the song and the way the melody guides the feeling more than helps the listener get the sentiment of the song. This is rightly among the bookies’ favourite to win Eurovision 2021.

Score: 9

Wow , I’m hugely surprised by the score here . Do wiwibloggers speak and understand french lol ? I like the melody , the singer is cute. It’s not a I’ve come to show off my vocals ballad which is a good thing . Also the ebb and flow of the music is captivating. However , its not as immediate to me as it was to some people. Maybe the lack of understanding of French has something to do with it . Amongst the bookies favourite to win , this is my clear favourite. I think this will be Top… Read more »

If he stages it right, Gjon is going to be very hard to beat. Obviously the top 5 on the bookies’ boards are the ones to watch closely; but if there’s a real dark horse out there, right now I would have to go with Tix from Norway, after having just seen his music video, a feel-good video based on a not-so-feel-good part of his life. Both Gjon (for the 2nd time) and Tix will be going in my MP3 collection.

Wiwi Jury is tasteful. I would never have said this, but even Tobias is tasteful for once. Switzerland is my favorite, but I don’t mind if France would win on May 22nd. Those are the two with the biggest chance of winning.

And, finally, here comes Gjon. So good. You wouldn’t hear “Tout l’universe” on the radio, as you wouldn’t hear “Rezpondez-moi” but these are the kind of songs that take you through a journey, hipnotized you, break you and mend you altogether. I might be one of the few who prefer “Rezpondez-moi” though. I don’t know if it is a winner, let’s wait for the performance, but the top 5 spot is secured for Switzerland. How has the Swiss delegation changed. They deserve a win. Hope Spain does that someday. 8.5/10 So overall, I think this year is a bit weaker.… Read more »

So this is it, huh? Another year, another favourite, and this time we end with a literal Big Bang – “Tout l’univers”. I’ll be brief – this song has grown on me a lot. The chorus is still a lot to take in, I don’t think it goes well with the ubiquitous atmosphere of melancholy, but I can’t deny that it possesses that “winning moment” potential. On the other hand, the frugal verses and pivotal bridge were definitely worth the one-year wait – dreamy, airy, ethereal. I’d like to dwell a little about the lyrical content, though. This is quite… Read more »

natalie’s review by no means reads as a 7.5 review, she clearly doesn’t feel strongly about the song. and yet i’ve read wiwijury reviews this year where they’ve said “i love the song” and given it a 5… poor natalie probably feels scared to go against everyone else !

12) Switzerland – Unlike Répondez-moi last year, Tout L’univers was pretty easy to get used to and I liked it almost right away. Like I said with Greece (or Ireland, I can’t remember my own darn comments!), this song takes you on an adventure and that’s part of why I like it so much. I think it would make a good winner, despite not being my personal favourite. To echo my comment last year, I think Gjon’s voice may be a bit difficult for people who just tune into the grand final to warm to, but I don’t think it’ll… Read more »

I give it 10!! I’M SO HAPPY HE WON THE WIWIJURY!! My Winner two years in a row!! I was so nervous thinking if Gjon would be able to make another Masterpiece after Répondez-moi, but he made it easily! I love everything about Tout L’univers too. His vocals are so unique and so beautiful! The soft beginning is so touching, then the production and the Instrumentals with that build up and the explosive second chorus (That moment is really the “point d’impact”!) make this song so powerful, so atmospheric, so epic! It’s interesting to me that “Tout l’Univers” received ten points twice and France five times, yet Switzerland has a higher Wiwi Jury score than France. If this were to happen with the Eurovision juries, Switzerland would benefit from this outcome. However, more people would be inclined to vote for France – simply based on the Wiwi jury. I know this evaulation isn’t representative of the actual voters.

In a year without a clear frontrunner, “Tout l’univers” was the song that had the strongest “this country is coming to win” first impression on me. Great singer with a distinctive voice, top-notch production (the transitions in the studio track are simply perfect), good piano-driven melody, it checks a lot of boxes. But I must say that I admire it more than I connect with it. Maybe its lyrics are too abstract or its ambitions are too high. I’m counting on Gjon’s stage presence to close the gap between respect and love. 8.5/10

Top 10, for sure. Winner? I don’t know. I love this song, it’s got such energy to it as the song builds and builds. It’s definitely among the top tier of well produced songs this year. However, I think calling it a winner might not be the case. It’s a top 10er for sure, maybe even Top 5, but as a winner I can’t see it, though staging could elevate it more. Duncan Lawrence was my winner in 2019, I’m a big fan of the Coldplay style vibe, especially in French. But I think it might just be too similar… Read more »

I waited a long time for a song in French to be capable of winning Eurovision again, and now two have come along at once! I adore “Tout l’Univers”; it is my second favourite this year. But my worry is that it will have its points split with France, thereby allowing a different third song in English to take the crown. This would be really heartbreaking, so I can only hope that people get behind either France or Switzerland, but make up their minds on one of them. About “Tout l’Univers” – The songwriting is simply beautiful and it also… Read more »

Interesting thing with Germany is that the song is very disliked by almost everyone on this page, while it is usually very well received by people outside of it. Most You Tube reviewers have put it relatively high on their lists. Everyone who isn’t a big ESC fan to whom I’ve shown it to likes it. SWITZERLAND – This is pure magic, as far as I am concerned. Beautiful, delicate, and rich music, paired with deep and meaningful lyrics about the rebirth and personal growth. It speaks to me so much, especially in times when it’s hard to get used to the constant changes life presents us with. Gjon has managed to stay my winner for a second year in a row. His emotional, yet powerful voice, masterfully orchestrates this symphony to the universe itself. Even though we see how small we are in it, we know how much we mean for its harmony. I may be a minority here, but… I think it’s a good song, but that’s it. It certainly doesn’t give me winner vibes, and I also think it sounds too similar to both Répondez-moi (which I found was a bit better) and Arcade. I can see why this is one of the hottest favorites to win Eurovision 2021.
It’s a ballad with a big meaning, poetic lyrics, no fireworks, and no crap they put in music these days. And it’s in French. This can be a victory for the French language in Eurovision once again.

What’s the big meaning behind it?

It’s not because it’s in french that there’s a big meaning behind Tout L’univers lyrics. I’m francophone and some of Tout L’univers lyrics aren’t linked between them.

There’s no real continuity and meaning between some of em contrary to Voilà, that is telling a whole and sensible story.

I’m not gonna call Switzerland my favourite, but I’m really satisfied by quality level they give. The vocals are perfectly strong , the tempo is well-chosen , the video is very good. The lyrics are OK. But for me the song isn’t the one to win. It’s pretty clichèd: when I was listening to it I just knew what will happen next. Things like that mustn’t happen if the song is better than just “well-done”. Also, I find it a bit dead and too carefully made. So I guess it’s just overproduced. If we compare this one to France, Pravi… Read more »

Finally a comment of yours I’m agreeing with. Tbh, and without any will to offend Tout L’univers stans, I think that between both french-sung songs, Barbara’s is better than Gjon’s

I must admit that I‘m completely biased because its a great chance for my country to win ESC and I really want to see this happen at least once in my life (and even better having it hosted in Berne).

But beside that Tout l‘univers has absolutely the potential to crack the Top 3, which already would be amazing. It‘s all about the staging now.

Anything but a plain piano in a dark background will bring Switzerland back to the Top3 for the first time since 1993!

I swear to god this is the most overrated song ever. I loved his song last year and his vocals were just a plus. This year, however, I feel like 90% of the hype is about his ‘beautiful angelic voice” (to quote Julian who gave it a 10), but what about the song? It’s sooooo boring, I’m sorry, even the high note in the end isn’t as epic as last years.

Also, nothing against Switzerland but I’m planning on going to Eurovision next year and I’d love to go to Malta, so please, leave.

Malta better than this? Give me a break. There’s nothing special about Malta. It’s the same thing you say about Switzerland, with Malta it’s all about Destiny, even more as Gjon’s Tears here. If there’s one most overrated song, it’s definitely Malta. His angelic voice is just one part, the song which takes you on a journey is another.

Hm, I don’t wanna go on a journey mate, I wanna party and shake my fatass (and also go to Malta next year hopefully)

8.77 for Switzerland versus 8.72 for France, according to mathematics, it’s above… But because here Tobias’s note was not evicted like it was the case in almost each entries (his 3.5 is stuck in my throat), I’m not sure that’s a real and fair win for Switzerland between the two 100% French entries. To be fair in my comment, I have to precise that I’m French but my tastes are worldwild and that I’m more a citizen of the European Union or the World than a citizen of my own country.

Honestly, I would be good with either of them winning. Switzerland is my 1st, and France is my 4th. Both are very beautiful! IDK why some people are biased to the point of bringing down favorites just because they fear competition. I mean, you are not obliged to like every favorite, but be objective enough not to down-rate it so much just so your favorite would have a better rating.
