Israel’s Eden Alene had her first rehearsal for Eurovision 2021 on Sunday, when we finally got to see her take to the Rotterdam Ahoy stage. Later on in the day, our William had the chance to interview Eden in person.

The “Set Me Free” singer told us about how things went, what the most challenging part of the performance is and what her costume means to her.

Interview: Israel’s Eden Alene at Eurovision 2021

With nails on point, Eden Alene told William about her thoughts on the first rehearsal and that she knows there’s still work to be done. “I think that I could do much better; I have a lot of practice to do at the hotel”, she says. “I need to sing and dance more than I thought that I gonna do. It’s hard, it’s very difficult to dance and sing.”

Eden is setting her goals high and wants to keep improving so she can match the performance ability of her idols, namely Queen B: “My expectation is to sound like Beyoncé. I know it’s high and in this competition I’m not going to reach it. But at the end of my life I really want to sing as Beyoncé sings when she dances”.

The Israeli star is already reaching highs of her own after showcasing her whistle notes, which could see her break the record for the highest note ever performed at the contest. Eden notes that she’s holding things back slightly for now during rehearsals, “I want to save my voice for the real thing”.  Eden needs to do the whistle notes every time she rehearses for sound purposes, but she’s limiting it ever so slightly.

Eden on her stage outfit: “It’s my personal set me free”

One of the key moments in Eden’s performance is her costume reveal. The “Set Me Free” songstress notes that this is actually the hardest part of the performance and it got stuck during her first run-through.

The outfit that’s revealed is a nude-coloured base layer with synthetic braids attached to it that are the same as Eden’s own hairstyle. The Israeli star stated that it was her own decision to wear something like this and showcase her personal freedom. “It’s representing my freedom. It was my idea to do this, so it’s my own set me free.”

By wearing braided hair on the outfit itself, Eden hopes to bring a small piece of her Ethiopian heritage to the performance. “It’s my braid, it’s my culture. It’s like the little Ethiopian girl really coming up, coming out in that part.” She adds, “But it’s not like on the front like in ‘Feker Libi’, it’s like a little touch and then carry on to the singer and the other side of me.”

Check out the rest of the interview to see Eden Alene talk more about the braids they used on the dress and her reaction to first trying it on.

She also discusses her stunning nails and shares her joy of finally being able to speak with wiwibloggs in person.

I get the meaning behind the dress but it simply doesn’t work. If you’re doing a costume reveal it has to pop on camera and wow the viewers. This almost looks uncomfortable to watch – I don’t want to see a talented young performer nude covered by their hair. Maybe it would work in a different setting (with some Ethiopian imagery and a beat change) but in the current form it just doesn’t look right. It’s great that her team is listening to her wishes but at some point they should have stepped in and explained why that wasn’t such… Read more »

Eden comes across as high-spirited, sparkly, bubbly, frank and honest but the fact that she speaks with no filter is frivolous. That’s not her biggest problem though: Simultaneously singing and dancing is not in her element and there’s no logic in pushing one’s limits on stage if it means your vocals sound shaky. Then there is that hitch with the jacket removal: why create potential obstacles when there can be easier ways around it? The most obvious overkill is the transparent dress: I don’t even wanna go there but it conjures up the wrong kind of imagery. Nobody will make… Read more »

Israel is absolutely disgusting. If we can ban Belarus, Israel should be banned 100 times over.

You cannot equate both sides equally when one is the occupier and one is the occupied.

You can not compare terrorism to a sovereign state, Israel is not an occupying state, there is historical evidence that the Jews lived in Israel before the Arabs, go do a stupid little girl homework.

no there isn’t. Israel stole the land full stop. Look at all those bots upvoting your propaganda. We are not terrorists. Our innocent children are dying because of an ethnic cleansing. We are not the terrorists.

Imagine Belarus choosing Kazna’s “Braids”, how awkward (and worse) that would have been.

I love her, but the performance gives me such a “shocking non-qualifier” vibe.

She is one of the best performers in the contest. Based on her talent alone she will sail through to the final.
