Switzerland Gjon's Tears First Rehearsal Eurovision 2021

Over the weekend, just after the last round of second rehearsals, we asked y’all to vote for your Eurovision 2021 semi-final two favourites. Now, with just hours to go until the show goes live, we can reveal your top picks in the second semi-final. After counting a total of 10,001 votes for 17 acts, the results are in.

Poll results: Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears is your favourite to win the second semi-final of Eurovision 2021 with “Tout l’Univers”

Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears has been a firm favourite with fans for months. And that support remains strong going into tonight’s semi-final. The “Tout l’Univers” singer amassed 1,366 votes or 13.66% of all votes cast. It has been one of the bookies’ favourites all season. And rightly so. It creates so many moments of stillness and emotion as Gjon takes us on his journey. Having French lyrics might seem like a weak point, but this is a case where the melody of the song guides our emotions. Dressed in an outfit resembling a flamenco dancer, he performs inside a large white frame as fog billows atmospherically around him. He does some light choreography. As the song reaches its climax, everything becomes much more frantic – the lights, his movements. The frame also separates into three distinct parts. It ends with an explosive cinematic flair, exuding class.

Bulgaria’s Victoria comes in second. The “Growing Up Is Getting Old” hitmaker attracted 11.65% of the vote, which amounts to an impressive tally of 1,165 votes. Like any good storyteller, VICTORIA doesn’t rush her exposition. She takes her time with “Growing Up Is Getting Old” — literally opening with the heavy sound of a ticking clock. The song slowly and carefully warms up, layering nostalgia and tenderness over strings and piano. As Victoria comes to terms with the relentlessness of time, expressed through that delicate and distinct voice, her trickle of emotion becomes a flood, delivering one of the biggest musical pay-offs of the year. This song may be a slow burn, but it definitely ignites, giving us an “it” moment worthy of the win. “I’ve never understood how so much can fit in little me,” VICTORIA sings. In these three minutes, she proves that she contains multitudes.

Bronze goes to Iceland’s Daði og Gagnamagnið with “10 Years”. The viral sensations took home 1,164 votes or 11.64% of all votes cast. Sadly, a member of Daði Freyr’s on-stage band Gangamagnið tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday. As a result, the group will compete using a backup recording from their second rehearsal earlier in the week. That performance explodes with colour — mint green is their signature — and video-game inspired graphics of the group’s six members.

The top five is complete by Greece’s Stefania with “Last Dance” and Finland’s Blind Channel with “Dark Side”.

If the final decision was down to our readers, the remaining five qualifiers would be Serbia’s Hurricane with “LOCO LOCO”, San Marino‘s Senhit feat. Flo Rida with “Adrenalina”, Albania’s Anxhela Peristeri with “Karma”, Portugal’s The Black Mamba with “Love Is On My Side” and Latvia’s Samanta Tīna with “The Moon Is Rising”.

Poll results: Who should win Semi-Final 2 of Eurovision 2021?

  1. Switzerland: Gjon’s Tears “Tout l’Univers” 13.66% (1,366 votes)
  2. Bulgaria: Victoria “Growing Up Is Getting Old” 11.65% (1,165 votes)
  3. Iceland: Daði og Gagnamagnið “10 Years” 11.64% (1,164 votes)
  4. Greece: Stefania “Last Dance” 11.33% (1,133 votes)
  5. Finland: Blind Channel “Dark Side” 7.93% (793 votes)
  6. Serbia: Hurricane “Loco Loco” 7.72% (772 votes)
  7. San Marino: Senhit “Adrenalina” 7.67% (767 votes)
  8. Albania: Anxhela Peristeri “Karma” 4.9% (490 votes)
  9. Portugal: The Black Mamba “Love Is on My Side” 4.75% (475 votes)
  10. Latvia: Samanta Tīna “The Moon Is Rising” 4.7% (470 votes)
  11. Denmark: Fyr & Flamme “Øve os på hinanden” 4.29% (429 votes)
  12. Moldova: Natalia Gordienko “Sugar” 2.54% (254 votes)
  13. Czech Republic: Benny Cristo “Omaga” 1.99% (199 votes)
  14. Austria: Vincent Bueno “Amen” 1.68% (168 votes)
  15. Estonia: Uku Suviste “The Lucky One” 1.6% (160 votes)
  16. Poland: Rafał “The Ride” 1.32% (132 votes)
  17. Georgia: Tornike Kipiani “You” 0.63% (64 votes)

Whoever thinks that performing towards the end is an advantage, think twice. In the past 6 Eurovisions the ultimate winner performed 4 times in position 10-11-12, and only twice after position 20. It has never happened since 2008 that the winner was among the last 3 performers.

We need more ballads ASAP!!
The first half of the grand final is full with up-tempo songs (Malta, Israel, Cyprus, Russia,UK) soo we need more ballads to let each song shine!
BTW I think Israel or Malta will open the show or will be 8-10..

Part 2 – Who will fulfill the remaining four spots? Even with not as many obvious fan-favorites being in this semi compared to the first, there are so many options, for various reasons. In order: Estonia (televoting via older audiences) Czech Republic (radio-friendly, catchy, and sleek) Austria (outstanding voice, jury-bait) Poland (fun, over-the-top song, might get some ”ironic votes” from the audiences) Moldova (catchy, sexy, televote magnet, even if the staging is clean) Serbia (energetic, well sung, well choreographed, juries like harmonies too) Albania (strong voice and stage presence) Portugal (really rising in the odds, brings some nostalgia) Latvia (really… Read more »

Good analysis, Colin. I’d agree with Portugal and Serbia for different reasons. At the momebr I really don’t see Czech Republic qualify, since vocally he was off and charisma was lacking, I don’t know what happened to him, but for me he looked much more joyful and charismatic when performing Kemama. Maybe it’s just my impression, I even disliked his song last year, while I find Omaga inoffensive and nice I don’t know… Moldova may qualify at the end, but I really think it does not deserve to: we have an ’80s number, a Balkan ballad, a slow tempo emotional… Read more »

My prediction (in alphabetical order): ALBANIA (a grower, so fair enough) – AUSTRIA (Please – fingers crossed!) – BULGARIA (meh … bored stiff every time) – FINLAND (fair enough) – GREECE (skip) – ICELAND (Yes!) – PORTUGAL (Yes!) – SAN MARINO (fair enough, but not for me) – SERBIA (I hope NOT – no doubt this year’s worst entry) – SWITZERLAND (meh … and ultimately tiresome)

Likely Anxhela or Natalia. Both have songs which are more televote draws, while stagings which are more jury-baits. I could see that not working in their advantage. Possibly The Black Mamba, if press polls overestimated the draw of the staging compared to the reaction after FdC.

The K has bought even the sim cards of the jurytelevoters….Will be surprise at least for me if Moldova NQ.

Anxhela is such a ‘plethoric’ presence…but if NQ will be scandal.

If that happens and Italy does well in the final, nothing makes sense anymore. Perhaps there will no “Albina of SF2”?

It’s very difficult to form a prediction for tonight: I got 8/10 qualifiers in my prediction on semi-final 1 but in the second semi I feel like there are a lot for borderline qualifiers that could go both ways. My prediction (in a random order) is the following:

San Marino
Greece
Iceland
Serbia
Albania
Portugal
Bulgaria
Finland
Switzerland
Denmark

Austria, Moldova and even Estonia can also qualify imo.

Switzerland will easily win semi final 2 by winning the jury vote and possibly even the Televote ; either way it’s going to be in the top 5 in the grand final ; nor would it even surprise me even if it won

I wonder when the semi final voting results showing the winner will be released to the Press?

Part 1 – Who will qualify. I think that it’s about 90% of chance that the following are qualifying tonight: Switzerland, Bulgaria, Iceland, Greece, San Marino, Finland. There are plenty of options in which order they’ll do it, but that’s certainly a discussion for post-semi theories. Switzerland and Bulgaria have by far the strongest emotional songs, delivered by outstanding vocalists. I think that the Swiss staging is effective, and will look great when properly edited. Bulgaria probably has the best staging of the evening. Iceland has a hype, charm, and a unique style of music. Even with the pre-recorded rehearsal… Read more »

SF1 results were literally perfect at the end. Even if I miss Amnesia, Amen and Maps, as I love those songs, they either had vocal problems (Romania and Ireland) or did not feel emotional enough (Slovenia). I really liked the other three NQs too, but Macedonia had no chance to begin with, Croatia was too similar to other pop songs and it would be terribile to lose Azerbaijan or Israel which were stronger packages to me, while Australia was just not strong enough for televoters I guess. Indeed my friends who watched SF1 were also extremely satisfied with the results,… Read more »

i completely agree. The most fair results in a semi-final that i can recall.
Israel was the most radio friendly pop track of the semi-final.

It will be interesting to see where Australia ended up and on what basis. As you say possibly sunk by Televoters. For me it was their best entry so far. Something did not quite work with Slovenia which was my favourite going into the contest. Maybe the draw worked against it? I would have preferred Australia, Croatia and Romania to qualify ahead of three others which I will not name. Depressing for Romania to tank three times now with adventurous and worthy entries in contrast to the tired Eurovision By Numbers every year. Just my opinion.

My qualifiers:

– Switzerland
– Bulgaria
– Iceland
– Portugal
– Austria
– Albania
– Finland
– Greece
– San Marino
– Denmark

If Serbia replaces one of these, the results would still be very good for me. Hopefully at least 9 of my qualifiers are going through
