She’s one of the Netherlands’ biggest pop stars. And Eurovision fans know her as the songstress behind “Sweet Water”, the Eurovision 2021 semi-final one interval act. However, participating in the actual song contest is something that Davina Michelle won’t likely do in 2022.

Davina Michelle unlikely to do Eurovision 2022

Her semi-final interval performance did not go unnoticed among fans and locals. Many Dutch people took Twitter to share their wish for Davina to become the country’s next Eurovision act. Additionally, Davina herself has made no secret of her dream to take part in the contest.

Nevertheless, Davina has distanced herself from the buzz by saying that she is waiting for the right moment. As of now, that is not likely to be 2022. Speaking to Shownieuws, the “Duurt te lang” hitmaker said:

“Let me say it like this: at this moment, my team and I have agreed that this might not be the moment. Look, it is something that the press often asks. I never say never. But I don’t have the feeling right now that this is the moment to do it or something. I’m also a feeling-oriented person. I do something when it feels right to do so. And if I think, well let’s wait, then I’ll wait.”

Davina added that she would like to talk with AVROTROS about possibilities and have meetings with regards to going to Eurovision. But at the end of the day, she says that she is likely to skip 2022 for the moment.

The Netherlands’ Eurovision 2022 plans

Whether Davina Michelle would be able to drink coffee with AVROTROS next year would also be very dependent on her song (if she were to submit one). Following the approach they’ve taken in the past few years, AVROTROS has again has fallen back on the “song first” approach.

Unlike earlier times, AVROTROS has said that it’s looking for a finished product and not an artist. On its special Eurovision site, the broadcaster states:

“AVROTROS or the selection committee will not set up a trajectory with an artist/songwriter to come to a (final) product. It is expected that a (demo) song of artist/songwriter with the above criteria will be brought to the attention of the selection committee at an advanced stage.”

AVROTROS made a major mistake in 2021 to just internally select Jeanguu without selecting the song just like they did in 2020, 2019. I know that 2020 was cancelled so they wanted to give Jeangu another chance but we saw the result this year… they could’ve avoided this disappointment by asking everyone to send their songs including Jeangu, Anyway, i think the interest for ESC is extremely high so they will find a good song for 2022. Davina is right, she needs to feel that it’s the right timing and she had a great song. Sweet Water is a very… Read more »

Have never heard her music before that semi-final but darn that “Sweet Water” song was mindblowing. Coming at the right moment (corresponding with Eurovision trends of a year) such song could win.

She is ok-ish… But for God’s sake… When will the ESC fans leave this fixation with power Divas??? ESC is not Miss Universe and the winners have not fit that stereotype for long now. I hope that the younger generation of fans that apparently are getting into ESC bring a different approach. Because this fixation is really getting old and faded.

Davina in a year or 5 is oke. But song comes first. I do like the album Wulf has made ……

If Davina Michelle got a good song in the coming years I love to see her representing the Netherlands. But it’s all about the song, more important than an excellent voice. The Netherlands has singing talents enough. Next year it will probably be another unknown name, just like Duncan Laurence was before Eurovision.

If it is another “unknown” name, I’d predict it to be Jim van der Zee. He won The Voice of Holland 2018.

Nobody cares about this Divina person to be honest, was a very underwhelming opening act and if that song was in the semi don’t think she would pass.

It was an interval act, not an opening act.

Gotta agree on the song itself. The act with all the dancers was what made it special.

Sanassa was unfairly downvoted. I agree that the whole interval act was about the staging rather than the song.

Between Covid impacting ESC 2021 and the abundance of cities that wanted to host before Rotterdam got the bid, I see AVRATROS being enthusiastic to win again in the near future, but I think they’ll just try to place well in 2022 and start another good streak.

Well there was an abundance of cities that wanted to host but realistically looking only around 3 suitable venues 🙂

Who do you guys want to see for the netherlands in 2022? I was thinking about Danny Vera (quality singer which the whole country would proudly stand behind. Would nicely fits into the country theme the netherlands has been known for the last few years.), or Jaap Reesema (long ago winner of the dutch X factor, has found brea through fame in Belgium and the Netherlands in the last year. He can write amazing ballads in dutch and english)

I love Danny Vera (he finished second in the German FreeEsc), but I don’t think we should send a country song for at least five years.

As a co-Dutch person, I have a list of people I’d like to see: If the person is a man: Danny Vera (You pretty much already introduced him. I’d add that he sings Americana and pop) Jim van der Zee (The Voice of Holland 2018 winner, sings pop, softrock, folk and soul) Dennis van Aarsen (The Voice of Holland 2019 winner, sings jazz) Rolf Sanchez (Dutch + Spanish rap-ish singing would be unique, his songs are also a great example of the music first approach. His style is a bit a mix of Mahmood, Luca Hänni and Miki Nunez (if… Read more »

Winning would be nice for us, but I honestly don’t think we, The Netherlands, will win if she represents us. I think Davina will end up being 5th when she participates.

She would be a great act for the future! For 2022, I’m still hoping for Jennie Lena. I’ve been rooting for her to go ever since her The Voice audition.

Smart. As much as I’d love to see her on the ESC stage, it’s not the right time. She’s someone who could easily win and there’s no way people would vote enough because not only did Rotterdam just happen but also because the contest was stuck there for 2 years. No reason to waste her chance. Even though it hurts to say this, I think Alesia Michelle was right when she said that Davina should wait 5 years and then come for the win.

It took sweden only 3 years from 2012. No reason why the netherlands wouldn’t be able to win in 2022 if we send a winner song and performance again. There’s lots of great choices besides davina michelle though so I don’t mind if she waits a few years.

Not the same thing. The contest was in Sweden for just 1 year and we got a new winner. Duncan got to “reign” for two whole years and The Netherlands hosted 2 shows. Yes, last year’s contest was cancelled but they were still the hosts of Europe Shine a Light. I fear that The Netherlands is gonna suffer from the same mentality the public has had with the host country acts over the last few years. Not to the same extent but I see them struggling to reach Top 5 for at least 2-3 years.

I think she could have what it needs to win. She has great songs and incredible vocals. It’s smart to wait a little bit before taking part in ESC as a contestant because I’m not sure Europe would want to see The Netherlands winning again. Perhaps in 2 or 3 years.

I think she skips next year because she already has other projects to do (similar to Tom Leeb who didn’t return and that becomes a turnaround for France). but I am also happy because she doesn’t put aside future years (2023 and beyond). maybe if she has “looser” time in the future.

Clearly, Tom didn’t have time this year, the guy he made three films, two series, a short film and two albums. And in the end everyone won. He was able to work (and we saw him naked in the series … well, we weren’t going to close our eyes) and finally Barbara went to Rotterdam to get us a magnificent second place. But I hope he will try his luck again for Eurovision, when he has a less full schedule. Otherwise he will forever be part of the very closed club of people who “almost” represented France. With Dani, deprived… Read more »
