Måneskin’s “I Wanna Be Your Slave” hasn’t been released as a single yet, but it’s already rocketing up the charts around Europe. Among many other notable positions, it’s already hit #2 in Austria and Norway, #3 in Germany and #7 in the UK. It’s also reached #18 on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart, which tracks global success outside of the US.

Driven by guitar and drum, the song nods to the band’s idols like Franz Ferdinand and Royal Blood. But the overriding sense of freedom and the elevation of something raw makes this very much Måneskin. Frontman Damiano David draws you in with his gentle rasp, waxing on his conflicting desires, before launching into an in-your-face meditation on redemption and how, good or bad, we’ve all got a story to tell.

The fourth song on their album Teatro d’ira: Vol. I, which dropped on March 19, “I Wanna Be Your Slave” doesn’t have an official music video. But the band did record a laidback performance for us at Mulino Recording Studio in Acquapendente, which we debuted at the Wiwi Jam at Home concert in May. A punch-to-the-gut that leaves you feeling invigorated, it balances playfulness with a sense of purpose. This foursome are here to make serious music while enjoying every minute.

What do the “I Wanna Be Your Slave” lyrics mean?

The song is told from the perspective of someone who has it bad for the object of their affection. The lyrics recount their obsession and how they’re willing to enslave themselves if that’s what it takes to win them over — perhaps for a lifetime, perhaps just for the night.

“I wanna make you hungry, then I wanna feed ya,” Damiano sings. “I wanna paint your face like you’re my Mona Lisa, I wanna be a champion, I wanna be a loser, I’ll even be a clown ’cause I just wanna amuse ya.”

Despite his nonchalant rock star vibe, Damiano understands that pursuing anyone is a risky business. Rejection sets his water pipes running: “I know you scared of me, you said that I’m too eccentric, I’m crying all my tears, and that’s f*cking pathetic.”

Beyond this specific reading, however, there’s a more general point about human sexuality and the many roles we play or at least think about playing. Whether that’s ceding control to feel empowered or the tension between wanting to dominate and submit, the band know we’ve all got room to explore.

Speaking to RockOn.it, Damiano said the lyrics are “a way to crudely describe all the facets of sexuality and how they can be influential in everyday life.”

“We inserted some contrasts: ‘I’m the devil, I’m a lawyer, I’m a killer, I’m a blonde girl.’ We want to convey the idea that we don’t have to have a single identity — everyone can have many facets.”

Bass guitarist Victoria De Angelis told Corriere della Sera that of all the lyrics on their album, “I wanna be your slave, I wanna be your master” spoke to her the most strongly.

“I recognize myself in the dualism of opposite things,” she said. “Each of us tends to get an idea of himself and to get stuck there. Instead, one can have pleasure in thinking and being the opposite, while remaining oneself….striving for things that you can appreciate later, but which you don’t feel ready for now.”

I Wanna Be Your Slave lyrics — Måneskin

I wanna be your slave
I wanna be your master
I wanna make your heart beat
Run like rollercoasters
I wanna be a good boy
I wanna be a gangster
‘Cause you can be the beauty
And I could be the monster

I love you since this morning
Not just for aesthetic
I wanna touch your body
So fucking electric
I know you scared of me
You said that I’m too eccentric
I’m crying all my tears
And that’s fucking pathetic

I wanna make you hungry
Then I wanna feed ya
I wanna paint your face
Like you’re my Mona Lisa
I wanna be a champion
I wanna be a loser
I’ll even be a clown
Cause I just wanna amuse ya

I wanna be your sex toy
I wanna be your teacher
I wanna be your sin
I wanna be a preacher
I wanna make you love me
Then I wanna leave ya
‘Cause baby I’m your David
And you’re my Goliath

Ah-ha
Mhm, ah-ha

Because I’m the devil
Who’s searching for redemption
And I’m a lawyer
Who’s searching for redemption
And I’m a killer
Who’s searching for redemption
I’m a motherf*cking monster
Who’s searching for redemption

And I’m a bad guy
Who’s searching for redemption
And I’m a blonde girl
Who’s searching for redemption
I’m a freak that
Is searching for redemption
I’m a motherf*cking monster
Who’s searching for redemption

I wanna be your slave
I wanna be your master
I wanna make your heart beat
Run like rollercoasters
I wanna be a good boy
I wanna be a gangster
Cause you can be the beauty
And I could be the monster

I wanna make you quiet
I wanna make you nervous
I wanna set you free
But I’m too f*cking jealous
I wanna pull your strings
Like you’re my Telecaster
And if you want to use me I could be your puppet

‘Cause I’m the devil
Who’s searching for redemption
And I’m a lawyer
Who’s searching for redemption
And I’m a killer
Who’s searching for redemption
I’m a motherf*cking monster
Who’s searching for redemption

I wanna be your slave
I wanna be your master

I think I prefer Zitti e buoni to this…and that’s saying something since it was my second-to-last place in the grand final 🙁 Though I’m not a fan of their music, they have so much potential and at such a young age too! Looking forward to seeing what happens next

I like to think of it as a modern update to Depeche Mode’s “Master and Servant”.
