Finland UMK TEN TV

How do you say Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu in Spanish? It may come in handy, as Spanish private broadcaster TEN TV will air Finland’s national selection UMK in 2022. Spain, are you still living in la simulación?

It’s not the first time this channel has announced it will air national selections on open television. Earlier this year, they announced they will be screening Estonia’s national final Eesti Laul in 2022.

The channel started a Twitter campaign named #TenAPorLasPres (#TenGoesForTheNFs) back in February, when they secured a deal with Estonia’s ERR for Eesti Laul.

Now, Finland’s YLE joins the list, and the Spanish viewers will be able to watch the Finnish show on live TV. It is not known yet whether the show will get Spanish commentary as well, nor who will be providing it.

TEN TV is an entertainment channel owned by Grupo Secuoya which regularly airs series, documentaries and docu-realities. It is a relatively new channel as it began transmitting in April 2016.

Its relationship with Eurovision dates back to some months ago, when the channel’s Community Manager tried to secure the rights for Sweden’s Melodifestivalen.

The move created a lot of buzz across the Spanish fandom, but it sadly did not make the goal, as Swedish broadcaster SVT did not accept the request.

However, TEN TV managed to get the rights for Eesti Laul, and they are aiming to air as many Eurovision national selections as possible.

More about UMK 2022

Finnish broadcaster YLE has confirmed UMK will return in 2022 and has revealed song submission details. Yle confirmed that the song submission period for Yle 2022 will take place from 1 to 6 September. That gives interested artists and songwriters three months to get an entry ready to submit.

After UMK 2021 was held without a live audience, UMK producer Anssi Autio says that it is intended for the 2022 addition to return to having a live audience, if possible.

The broadcaster has also released the song submission rules for UMK 2022. It notes that while songwriters are able to enter multiple songs, lead singers can only enter up to three songs — and only one will be eligible for selection.

Will you be following Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu on TEN? Which other shows do you want them to air? Should any broadcaster in your country follow their example? Let us know in the comment section below!

Bit of context: TEN is a minor channel without any backing from the ‘big three’ of Spanish television – RTVE, Atresmedia or Mediaset. In its early days its lineup was based purely on marathon runs of American reality TV series and it was Keeping Up with the Kardashians that first put them in the map until they lost the rights to rivals DKISS. I recall watching The Carbonaro Effect (a mix of hidden camera pranks with magic show) and Saara Aalto’s season of The X Factor UK in there too. They also tried their hand at original content (mostly because… Read more »

More context: maybe people don’t understand how small TEN is, but yeah, it’s a really small channel. Their ratings are some of the lowest in spanish tv: last month they made a 0,7%, placing them really close to last place, and this month they’re following the same path.
Is this going to translate to big numbers? Probably not, but in the case of TEN, even a 1% would be big, and that should be easy to achieve…

Weird, but cool. And apparently enough people tuned in in the past. Amazing.

That’s so cool! Spanish people are so lucky they can access multiple NFs so easily.

Ummmm ok? I get their point that they wanna broadcast some NF’s, maybe to follow other countries’ lead or just for fun while waiting for the real show but why don’t they air ALL NF’s or at least like 4-5 of them? Can a Spaniard maybe clarify if this channel is small or not because that would be something that could drag them down from the aforementioned idea (and we all know that RTVE doesn’t care at all)

Re: “Why don’t they air all NF’s”

Acquiring airing rights to live shows are expensive (would need support from advertisers if the broadcaster is commercially funded) so realistically, they can’t air them all on simulcast. Some of these shows air on the same day at the same time so some of them will have to be aired on delay.

The channel will have to be smart which national finals they can carry.

It’s a small channel, 0.7% share last month, which was their historical maximum.

They are aiming to air as many Eurovision national selections as possible.

If the goal is to air them all live, it’s fine as long as the selection shows don’t overlap with each other scheduling-wise, especially with Super Saturdays.

UMK in Spanish: El Concurso de Nueva Música (or El Concurso de Música Nueva depending on where the modifier adjective should be placed, whether it is a permanent modification to the noun or a temporary one)
