Eurovision stars react to Italy victory over England Euro 2020

After a year-long postponement, 24 countries and 51 matches, the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship finally came to a conclusion on Sunday night. Italy and England, two behemoths of European football, faced off against each other in London’s Wembley Stadium. But only one team could lift the coveted trophy, and after a thrilling game which went to extra time and then penalties, Italy emerged victorious.

This marks Italy’s second victory at a major international event in just three months. Of course, they won Eurovision 2021 in May with Måneskin and “Zitti E Buoni” in May. Social media has been filled with memes drawing comparisons between the rockers and their soccer counterparts.

@Jedward The game is called football, not soccer! This was a european championship and you are not american, so there‘s no need to americanize it.

The word soccer originated in the UK, and only became out of fashion there when the US started using it. So hardly… ‘americanizing’
.

Its to differentiate it from GAA

Soccer stems from its full name “associate football”. The rest of the world preferred just using “football”.

When its based on who’s friends with who, England & UK come last.

When it’s based on pure talent, with no hint of a televote in sight, England & UK come 2nd!!!

This Euro 2020 was full of drama!

– Finland and North Macedonia made their European Championship debuts

– Players such as Christiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba dissmissing the sponsors

– Germany lighting up Allianz Arena with the rainbow colours when they were playing against Hungary! Shade!

– Azerbaijan officials confiscating rainbow flags from fans, showing how homophobic country they are

– English football fans making fun of a German girl crying, pointing laser beams at the Danis goalkeeper and then even starting to show racist opinnions as their team didn’t win.

The lighting of the arena in Munich never happened – because UEFA are pathetic.

Thankfully in the end they did say that: “The rainbow is not a political symbol, but a sign of our firm commitment to a more diverse and inclusive society.” as they also changed their logo in social media to include a rainbow background so in the end although the arena in Munich didn’t get lit up other stadiums did, so did the Town Hall, Olympiaturm, and the wind turbine right next to the football arena.

Given what Greece and Portugal pulled off, maybe Italy will do an Ireland and win on home soil?

Also, having gotten England to the semis of the World Cup and the finals of the Euros, I’d say the HoD needs lessons on managing Eurovision from Gareth Southgate.

Since 2000, only Southern European/Mediterranean countries have won the Euro: France 2000, Greece 2004, Spain 2008&2012, Portugal 2016 and now Italy 2020. It’s nice to see them also doing well in ESC with Portugal, Italy (and even Israel’s) recent wins..

Glad for Italy. Deserved. They were good in all matches except against Spain maybe. Very consistent tho. A very Italian win was.
Sad for England and for their young generation but they have so much talent in that squad.
Denmark was also fantastic

In 2017 wiwibloggs had done on article mentioning how Greece’s 2004 win was a harbinger for their 2005 ESC win and whether Portugal’s win could do the same ?
And then it did

GG to Italy, Forza Italia! As a Brit, yes I am disappointed that our immaculate squad lost to penalties , but oh well! One thing I’d like to point out is some of our low-life, disgusting fans are sending abuse to some of the black players (Rashford, Saka) for missing their penalties. Please don’t join in too! The artists have great reactions too! 🙂

Brava Italia, you were the better side and it was proven. However, I want to say as a British man that how our fans acted after the match with the racism and assaulting of Italian spectators and fans is proving the narrative that England are very sore and salty losers. Also how James Newman handled his nul point in Eurovision this year is how the Country should of handled defeat to Italy on Sunday, instead of disgusting racist abuse and indignant assaulting of Italians. I couldn’t agree more, that the thing with the English (even though I am one) there is this thing of ruining everything they compete in, by what ever means possible, booing of national anthems or assaulting fans and racially persecuting our POC players, without whom we would of not of made it as far.

Oh so England is a “behemoth of European football” now? Let me just have a good laugh, hahaha… They were just lucky with the draw and played their whole tournament against weak teams (out of 7 games, they only faced 2 potentially serious opponents: Germany and Italy, which they lost against). Without that they would have been eliminated way before the final. It’s 2021 and we are post-Brexit, there’s nothing England is a behemoth of.

Awesome job Italy, so happy for you!!

Yes, England always seem to get lucky with the draw. And sadly how the tide turns. When Andy Murray loses he becomes “Scottish” and Jo Konta “Australian with Hungarian roots”. The Brexit referendum said it all. Pity those youngsters who were chosen to take penalties.

Wow some people are so petty… and why bring up Brexit? England was the runner-up because they played brilliantly and if you can’t see that, it says far more about you than it does about them.

Awesome job England, so happy for you!!

Do you even watch the sport?!?!? Germany is a REALLY bad team right now, they’ve never performed this poorly for so many decades. Denmark was a greater threat to England than Germany was, Ukraine had even suffered from multiple injuries after their match against Sweden.
