They’re currently taking the United States by storm, having appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and performed at the iconic Bowery Ballroom in New York. And now Eurovision winners Måneskin have another claim to fame: They’re up against the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Megan Thee Stallion at the American Music Awards.

The Italian four-piece are nominated in the Favorite Trending Song category, which nods to the most viral songs of the year based on TikTok data. Their cover of “Beggin'” is up against offerings that include Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license” and Popp Hunna’s “Adderall (Corvette Corvette)”.

Måneskin nominated for Favorite Trending Song at the American Music Awards

Måneskin are in some very viral company.

Megan Thee Stallion’s “Body” music video started a global TikTok trend thanks to its intense choreography. It sees Megan thrusting her knees and thighs inward as she moves her arms with force and vigour before turning to shake her rear. It’s no wonder she recently released Megan Thee Stallion Hottie Sauce in conjunction with a major US fast-food chain.

Also on the list is Olivia Rodrigo with “drivers license”, which was the first song to surpass one billion global streams in 2021. It also spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200. Here in the UK, the song racked up more than 2.4 million streams in just 24 hours. According to the Official Charts Company, that meant it surpassed Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” in claiming the highest number of streams ever in a single day for a non-Christmas song.

Måneskin going strong with 2017 cover of “Beggin'”

Måneskin’s success with “Beggin'” started quite some time ago. The band first performed the song in 2017 while they were competing on the eleventh season of X Factor Italia. They never released it as a single, but it managed to hit #39 on the Italian Singles Chart anyway and a year later FIMI certified it as a gold record.

Following Eurovision, the song found new life on TikTok, which helped push it up the charts elsewhere. In July the cover hit number 1 on the Spotify Global charts.

Beggin’ has spent 17 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and is currently in spot 15 — its peak position.

Its success in the United States may stem partly from the fact it has American roots. “Beggin'” was popularised in 1967 by the American Franki Valli and his band The Four Seasons. The song was subsequently reworked by the likes of  French DJ Pilooski and Norwegian hip-hop group Madcon. Musical theatre buffs may recognise the song from the Broadway musical Jersey Boys, which is about the Four Seasons.

AMA is a fanbase contest, multiple voting over a nineteen day period. So, it’s possible for them to win if this gets publicized by Eurovision news sites and bloggers, and gets some coverage in Italy.

Don’t think they’re going to win this but being nominated is still a huge achievement!
