France in Junior Eurovision 2021: Enzo with “Tic Tac”

French broadcaster France TĂ©lĂ©vision internally selected Enzo to represent the country at this year’s contest. At just 13 years of age, he will have the challenging task of succeeding Valentina, who earned France their first Junior Eurovision victory in 2020. But it’s a challenge that Enzo will put his singing experience towards.

Enzo is a real citizen of the world who has already travelled to the four corners of the planet and speaks several languages. Born in the Paris region, his family moved to Macao when he was six months old for his father’s job as an airline pilot. They then moved to Hong Kong where Enzo grew up and developed his passion for singing and music.

In 2020, the French public discovered Enzo during his participation on The Voice Kids. The young singer specified that he intended to make the coaches’ seats turn since he had made the trip all the way from Asia. Two coaches finally turned around during his blind audition and Enzo eventually made it all the way to the final.

Enzo is known to be particularly fond of rap and R’n’B. After taking singing lessons to perfect his technique, he gained a following through his Youtube channel. He records and edits the covers that he publishes online all by himself. Initially intended only for his family members, the videos quickly progressed from a few views to more than 30,000 for his freestyle rap videos.

What do the “Tic Tac” lyrics mean?

Sometimes sung, sometimes chanted, “Tic tac” is a song in which Enzo encourages us to live life to our own rhythm.

Enzo uses the ticking of a clock to represent the mundane beat everyone follows day in, day out, during their everyday lives. However, in the chorus, Enzo notes that he inverts this beat and lives out of sync with the rest of society:

Everyone lives life at a hundred miles per hour
Tick, tock, tick
But my rhythm, my music, it’s
Tock, tick
Sharing happiness

The 13-year-old reminds us to savour every second of life. Although we might be focused on the things happening immediately around us, it’s important to escape every once in a while. Taking a note from his predecessor Valentina, Enzo also suggests we add a little imagination into our lives:

Head in your bubble, you forget that your planet is one
Come on, we'll go out, we'll take a walk so everyone has the same
I want us to stop for a bit on one of these blue beaches
Feet in the hourglass
Make room for imagination but don't pretend

The recurring “Tic Tac” refrain runs throughout the song and could be seen as a representation of just how much we let things overwhelm our lives. But Enzo’s advice on how to avoid this is captured best of all in the bridge:

Oh, if only you knew
I’ve been happy since my watch stopped
I do whatever I want

Tic, tac, tic
Dans mon cœr tout est magique
Tic, tac, tic
Tout lе monde vit Ă  cent Ă  l’heure
Tic, tac, tic
Moi mon tempo, ma musique, c’est
Tac, tic
Partager du bonheur

Tic, tac, tic
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Tic, tac, tic
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na
(Tic, tac, tic, tac, tic, tac, tic, tac)

Tic, tac, tic
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Tic, tac, tic
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Tic, tac, tic (Ça fait tic, ça fait tac)
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na (Ça fait tic, tac)
Tic, tac, tic (Ça fait tic, ça fait tac)
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na (Ça fait tic, tac)
Tic, tac, tic (Ça fait tic, ça fait tac)
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na (Ça fait tic, tac)
Tic, tac, tic (Ça fait tic, ça fait tac)
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na (Ça fait tic, tac)
Tic, tac, tic
Tic, tac, tic
Tic, tac, tic
Dans ton cœur tout est magique

English translation

At the top from the start, at the speed of light
A thunderbolt, a flash and all life accelerates
Come on, let’s stop for a bit, I’ll count 5, 4, 3, and 2
And we’ll slow down time
Faster, much faster than the grown-up’s music
If everything is automated we’re robots not people
In these moments I take off, I see the ground shrink
My clock turns slowly

Tick, tock, tick
In my heart everything is magical
Tick, tock, tick
Everyone lives life at a hundred miles per hour
Tick, tock, tick
But my rhythm, my music, it’s
Tock, tick
Sharing happiness

Tick, tock, tick
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Tick, tock, tick
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na
(Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock)

Head in your bubble, you forget that your planet is one
Come on, we’ll go out, we’ll take a walk so everyone has the same
I want us to stop for a bit on one of these blue beaches
Feet in the hourglass
Make room for imagination but don’t pretend
If there’s magic in the air it’s in you big or small
That’s how we fly and leave our worries on the ground
We don’t live during the same hours but we can live at the same time

Tick, tock, tick
In my heart everything is magical
Tick, tock, tick
Everyone lives life at a hundred miles per hour
Tick, tock, tick
But my rhythm, my music, it’s
Tock, tick
Sharing happiness

Tick, tock, tick
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Tick, tock, tick
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Tick, tock, tick
Tick, tock, tick
Tick, tock, tick

Oh, if only you knew
I’ve been happy since my watch stopped
I do whatever I want

Tick, tock, tick
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Tick, tock, tick
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Tick, tock, tick (It goes tick, it goes tock)
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na (It goes tick, tock)
Tick, tock, tick (It goes tick, it goes tock)
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na (It goes tick, tock)
Tick, tock, tick (It goes tick, it goes tock)
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na (It goes tick, tock)
Tick, tock, tick (It goes tick, it goes tock)
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na (It goes tick, tock)
Tick, tock, tick
Tick, tock, tick
Tick, tock, tick
In your heart everything is magical

Electro swing mixed with fresh and fun pop, some lyrics that make sense, I wouldn’t call that childish but more age appropriate, it fits perfectly junior eurovision and the idea of this contest imo.

This is the 3rd year in a row that France nailed it in Junior Eurovision. All those entries are totally age-appropiate, very entertaining and sound super professional. “Bim Bam toi” is even in one of my playlist surrounded by “grown up songs”.

France are killing the game at JESC and I anticipate a strong finish for Enzo.

Honestly my fav song of the year so far. France just nails the connection between accessibility and childlike enthusiasm which all French entries since their comeback have shown.

France has (again) a great singer / song combination and a music-video on a very high pro-level. The song is very catchy and made like the songs from Valentina and Carla. France knows how to do it right in Junior Eurovision. Does it have a chance to win? I don’t know, because Poland is super strong and we don’t know the songs from N-Macedonia, Armenia, Bulgaria, Italy …. we will see.

Yeah Portugal, Ireland, AzerbaĂŻdjan and Georgia could come very strong too, although Italy, Armenia have been pretty silent so far, we don’t even know their performers, and for Ireland and AzerbaĂŻdjan we still don’t know anything about their songs so let’s see but the contest is in 39 days from today and time flies very quickly so they should hurry up a bit. For France this year a top 5 would be great, a top 3 would be fantastic if they won it’s pure bonus but I don’t think they are looking for that at all costs, they want to… Read more »

Yeah I knew that, I’ve even listened her potential song for 2020, but what about their 2021 act?

It has been implied to be her (though I have been burned by various false rumours surrounding ESC2021 participation as I have strong opinions on Athena) for this year, as she has regularly been in the studio with her writer (the HoD)

I know your dream would be to see Athena at Eurovision so maybe the next year will be the year who knows, keep the faith 🙂

And I also want the song to return to aspects seen in Chains On You, which she hasn’t used since. Though that being said, her latest song OMG has meta lyrics (including references to writing a 3 minute song) and various gratuitous German lines, even though I don’t want her to send a song without the vibrato she sings in in Chains On You, rapping or a finale (OMG has none of these 3 features, which were the 3 reasons why I like Chains On You so strongly). In September she said she has at least 6 unreleased songs and… Read more »

A cute and fun song for children in appearance but with strong meanings and subtle metaphors serving a cool message.
