National final season is upon us and Finnish broadcaster Yle is starting to get into the spirit of things. The broadcaster has dropped seven photos that give clues as to the competing acts of UMK 2022.

Yle has started hype for UMK 2022 by publishing a series of photos on its Instagram account. The photos start with a photo of a dog named Max — who doesn’t appear to be one of the competing acts!

The photo caption reads, “UMK’s social media team has received even more secretive material from UMK for the coming period. Now you have to put on a tinfoil hat and speculate: what do you think these pictures reveal?”

But then things get interesting, with seven photos which fans are speculating represent the seven competing acts in UMK 2022.

The first photo shows two large rocks, with a spotlight artistically shining on one. Next is the legs of someone wearing black trousers and black shoes, but standing on a blue floor with white parallel lines. The next photo shows the shoulder of a performer. They’re wearing a dark jacket bedazzled with crystals.

Next is the corner of a vintage white vehicle. It might be a van and it’s looking a little rough around the edges. Then we can see half an upright piano in an elegant setting. Sitting atop the piano is a sculpted head and decorative light.

Then things get exciting. The next photo shows a person wearing white embellished trousers and they’re holding the classic Flying V guitar, for maximum rock effect.

The final shot appears to be a screen showing a television test screen, with a series of numbers and colours.

But what does it all mean?

Finland returns to national final UMK for 2022

In September, Yle opened the entry period for its national final Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK). The broadcaster has now whittled down the entries to seven competing acts.

While Yle has not yet given a date when it will reveal the competing acts, the broadcaster previously said it would announce the acts sometime in January 2022.

What do you think? What do the clues point to? Who would you like to see competing in UMK 2022? Tell us your thoughts below!

Is it just me or is Finland working hard? I love this

Finland lacks that success other nordic countries seem to get without a doubt, Sweden of course being the overrated nordic country will get mad if Finland gets another well placing act next year. Let’s pray for that and let that basic pop from Sweden to stay in their semifinal!

No idea on UMK, but if they keep their recent track record, this will be a show to watch. 🙂

On an unrelated note, both Juri Pootsmann and Elina Born have recently released new songs under 3 minutes. While usually EL releases their songs simultaneously, they usually don’t have quarter-finals either, so I have no idea whether this indicates their potential involvent or not. Would be very cool, though, as both songs are good.

Too bad, as Elina is fantastic, and her new song is cool too. Perhaps another year…

I didn’t think I’d get very excited with very little! Kudos to YLE for stepping up their game, I’m sure next year’s will be a third cool UMK in a row!

As Erasmus already pointed, the rocks also reminded me about Aksel’s staging this year. Would he try it for the third year in a row?

In any case, all things considered, UMK was for sure one of the most successful national finals in 2021. Not just Blind Channel got a great result and charted well, but also all the other participating acts left a good impression. And the show as a whole was very well produced. Well, done, YLE! Please keep the translated version for us international fans.

Indeed! UMK 2021 became the best edition of the contest, most of the acts ended up making it to the local charts, with 3-4 of them making it to the top 10

Well the guitar looks like a Gibson model, it’s 6-string so I think it points to a metal band.

The jacket on the 4th picture looks just like something Antti Tuisku could wear. Could he finally be taking part in the competition or is he hosting again? I can’t wait!

Totally agree with you on the first statement!
But that’s not Aksel’s dog because he has a Saluki called Topi. I think the dog belongs to the person who works with the lighting since they called him Max the lighting dog. He’s very cute though.

I am so excited for this. The pictures don’t give away much but they do look promising. I hope the songs are as promising as the photos because I want to see Finland do even better than they did in 2021 and maybe even go all the way and win in 2022.

After Blind Channel’s big success (best result since their victory) I think many other rock bands submitted for UMK22. And some of them must be accepted for national final.
Does anybody have an idea , which rock bands from Finland that have similar style to Blind Channel ?

Rock in general is very big in finland, they’re the nation with the most rock bands per capita in Europe. So I think there’s many, many Finnish bands similar to blind channel

I’d say the closest match is a relatively small band called Awake Again! Really hope they partake in UMK sometime.
