More acts are being rumoured for Melodifestivalen 2022. The next names on the list are Melfest 2010 winner Anna Bergendahl and Mello diva Linda Bengtzing. Also on the list is the new popera duo Tenori. The names come courtesy of Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

2010 winner Anna Bergendahl looking to return

Anna Bergendahl will reportedly be making her fourth appearance in Melodifestivalen. She first made her Mello debut in 2010 and went on to win that year with her song “This Is My Life”. However, the folk-pop tune did not qualify for the Eurovision grand final.

Anna later proved herself the Mello comeback queen. She returned in 2019 with “Ashes to Ashes”, then had “Kingdom Come” the following year. Her 2020 entry placed third in the Melfest grand final and also won the OGAE Second Chance Contest later that year.

Mello veteran Linda Bengtzing set for eighth appearance

Linda Bengtzing is a familiar face on the Melodifestivalen stage and now the diva is set to make her eighth appearance. According to Aftonbladet‘s source, Linda will be singing a Swedish song. They say it is “a real Linda song but which feels like 2022”.

Linda debuted at Melodifestivalen 2005 with the song “Alla flickor”. Her best result was in 2008 with the fifth-placed “Hur svårt kan det va?”. Most recently she competed at Melfest 2020 with “Alla mina sorger” which was eliminated in its semi-final.

New popera duo Tenori will make Melfest debut

Also rumoured for Mello 2022 is the new popera duo Tenori. Little is known about the group, including the identities of the members. But Aftonbladet‘s source has confirmed that Tenori is made up of two male singers “who can really sing”. The duo has been specially put together for Melfest 2022.

The group has been compared to Il Volo, suggesting they will bring a popera sound. However, Aftonbladet‘s source says the duo also has a flavour of 1980s British synth-pop groups like Pet Shop Boys and Erasure. The source has high hopes for Tenori, saying “It would not surprise me at all if they got a place in the grand final.”

Melodifestivalen 2022: What we know so far

The Melodifestivalen tour is set to return in 2022. Semi-finals are due to kick off in Malmö on 5 February 2022, with the grand final due to take place at its usual home at Friends Arena in Stockholm on 12 March. Melfest 2022 will be hosted by Oscar Zia. The three-time Melodifestivalen contestant and one of the 2021 hosts will be the main show host this season, however he will also be joined by other stars, still to be named.

According to Aftonbladet, we already know 14 acts for Melodifestivalen 2022. They are Robin Bengtsson, LiamooKlara Hammarström, Alvaro Estrella, Angelino, Lance HedmanJohn Lundvik, Malou Prytz, Theoz, Cazzi Opeia, Medina, Anna Bergendhal, Linda Bengtzing and Tenori.

The confirmed line-up of Melodifestivalen 2022 is expected to be announced in late November.

It’d be cool if a new act won, but I would like Anna to win too, I think she deserves a chance to redeem herself after the awful outcome she had in 2010 🙁

I look forward to hearing Anna’s song. 🙂 But if there are better songs in the Melfest, then I am more than happy to see a new face representing Sweden in 2022. 🙂

I still don’t understand how Anna didn’t qualify in 2010. For me it was a potential winner. I hope she gets to the final one day with a great song.

At this rate it’d be news if Anna Bergendahl was NOT entering

Anna Bergendahl and Linda Bengtzing are the only names I am unironically really excited for. Pure legends. They have performed such winning material bangers in the past, so they better not to disappoint. Take that trophy already.

My favorite Swedish singer is back yes!! Loved Ashes to Ashes & Kingdome Come! Her voice is country-pop, upbeat mostly so I’m looking forward to her song this year… surprise me!

I really really want Dotter to compete again. She should have won in 2020. Bulletproof was a masterpiece!

Why do people keep going on and on and on about Dotter? She lost, get over it. Give the acts that are actually taking part some of the limelight they deserve.

She told in interviews that she won’t compete as an artist again, but would love to come back as a songwriter

Surprised Anna is back given that she was so vocal about not coming back to focus on her medical studies. Guess she must’ve been offered a very very good song. Even last year she passed on performing her own song. I loved Linda in the 00s—her entries probably were my favorites over other more popular Schlager queens…but it’s not the first time her recent entries have been dubbed “classic Linda but with a [insert current year] modern sound” and they have failed to make an impression with the televoters and, perhaps, even myself.

I know, I am surprised too. Don’t know if I believe it..
She was adamant and determined to finish her studies and exam next year. Mello is a 100% thing, you can’t give it 75% of your time. Don’t know if she can balance two 100% projects..
But maybe she will just be songwriter this year, to have less pressure and more focus on studies? That or a good song..

I loved “Ashes to Ashes” & “Kingdom Come” so I am looking forward to Anna’s closing chapter of her redemption trilogy, how awesome will it be if she became the first artist to win Melfest twice this century and go on to qualify for the Eurovision Grand Final and even snap a Top 5 finish? She’s an excellent musician who’s grown so much and seems a genuinely wonderful lady.

I liked Ashes to Ashes but loved everything about Kingdom Come. In my mind she was going and I was stressed about her having to ditch a couple of dancers.

I doubt that Bergendahl claim. In a interview just last week for the Eurotrip podcast she said she would not this year because she wants to focus on her studies and her exam in July. Maybe she writes thus year, to have less pressure..

I mean if she participates this year that would mean she then already signed a non disclosure agreement so it’s logical you’d lie when a eurovision podcast asks you about it.

Well if she has university studies and exam this year it is almost impossible to commit full time to Mello. University studies are 100% here, it takes up all of your time. Mello is also 100%..

One more artist in the returning melfest winners category for this year. The new faces will stand out at this point, so much returning artists so far in this potential line up so let’s see how will be the rest. If I’m correct it would remain 10 artists to be revealed, but in the 14 out of 24 revealed so far not many new faces… among them Tenori, it sounds interesting, popera is epic in general and the fans seem to love popera, Il Volo has won the public vote in 2015 and maybe the comparisons with them would be… Read more »

La Forza, Zero Gravity or My Friend.
All Top 10 with televoters.
And La Voix didn’t do that bad with televoters

La Voix got what, 17th with voters?
And even if it did well there is no guarantee every song with pop- opera mix will work, that is not how ESC works. If it is a bad song it will not be helped by the fact that the mix used to work…

I thought La Voix was like 12th with televoting. I always remember the jury destroying it.
Just checked it and it was 15th with viewers. Very bad and early running order tho.
4th in the SF with more than 100 points.

I agree there’s no guarantee. for sure. Song, artist and performance is what matter but a popera or lyrical songs may have an audience (like other genres) and sometimes if it’s alone in a sea of ballads and pop.. it could stand out.
Anyway Eurovision is unpredicatable 🙂

the pattern seems to be:
classy opera (la forza, grande amore) = hit
tacky opera (la voix, questa notte) = flop
tacky opera by people who can’t sing (illusion) = flop fatale

Jake

OMG. Illusion was a crime against humanity’s ears. It’s been awhile since Melodifestivalen had an opera singer. I think the last one was Richard Soderberg in 2015. I feel like in the 00s, Melfest had more theater/opera songs in competition and they have all but disappeared for Spotify-friendly tracks. This act’s description actually reminds me of Finland’s Opera Skaala in musical style.

Actually Emmi Christensson with Song Called Icarus is last opera song in Mello.

I believe Emmi Christensson is more of a musical theater actress (but I’ll stand corrected if she has sung at Swedish Opera houses) and I wouldn’t consider Icarus opera–she certainly hit that high note at the end but she’s not pure opera like Rickard and Malena…Emmi is more like Peter Joback

Don’t forget Cesar for Romania and was it Ameury Vassili for France? Sorry, I loved Illusion though the elderly-looking backing singer/dancer sticks in the mind.

La forza and Grande amore really deserve all the praise they get! Simply magical, both of them. 🙂 I wouldn’t call Questa notte tacky + 16th out of 42 participating countries is far from a flop. I don’t agree with the hit/flop dichotomy when it comes to assessing ESC songs, as there are many stages in between. It was a moderate success for a really good song. I agree on La voix from my part.I actually like the operatic chorus, but the pop verses are terrible, and really kill the mood. Illusion is simply mesmerizingly terrible by all means… It’s… Read more »
