Måneskin Duncan Laurence Spotify Wrapped 2021

December 1 is traditionally the day when people open the first door on their Advent calendars and begin the countdown to Christmas. But it’s also when Spotify drops its year-end wrapped experience. In addition to personalised stats for each individual user, the streaming giant also releases details of the top music streamed globally. And this year two Eurovision winners make the list — Måneskin and Duncan Laurence.

Måneskin and Duncan Laurence make Spotify’s Global Top Tracks of 2021 list

Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license” is the top song of 2021 on Spotify globally. It amassed over 1.1 billion streams. However, Måneskin aren’t too far behind. The Italian Eurovision 2021 champs are at #10 with their 2017 cover of “Beggin'”. Further down the list, we find their first post-Rotterdam single “I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE”. The Wiwi Jam at Home favourite is at #34 globally.

You’ll notice that the group’s winning entry “Zitti E Buoni” doesn’t appear in the top 50. However, there is an actual Eurovision winner in the overall mix. At #44 we find the Netherlands’ Duncan Laurence with “Arcade”. Duncan, of course, won Eurovision 2019 with the song.

Funny that neither Duncan nor Maneskin mention Eurovision in their bio on Spotify…go figure

And as we all know, if it’s not in the Spotify bio, it didn’t happen!

Not surprised by their success. Imo they are the best winners Eurovision had seen in decades. We had nice winners in the past years (for example Alexander Rybak, Loreen, Conchita Wurst) but here we finally have winners that can pretend to a global success. I hope it’s only the begginning of something bigger.

Agree. They have instant star appeal and manage the fine line of being both commercial and authentic. Would prefer they stay away from covers

So funny that many people claimed that Arcade was a lame winner (Spirit In The Sky and Lazarev fans in particular). Also people speculated that Italy won only because it had struggled the most with Covid. Now all those speculations look extra dumb

Remember that Arcade won neither the jury vote nor the televote… and then it became the biggest Eurovision hit since Euphoria (maybe even bigger if you look at the worldwide impact). Weird how things go sometimes.

Sweden won the 2019 jury vote, but maybe Duncan would have won if Belarus and the robots had not ruined it. It doesn’t really count for me.

North Macedonia won the jury vote, Sweden came at a close second.

Sweden won the jury vote. North Macedonia won the jury and robot vote.

The points from Belarus did not come from Belarus, they did not come from a jury, they did not come from humans. They don’t count.

I guess Belarus’s “aggregate” votes were more like “how they most likely would have voted.” Even if North Macedonia got second in jury they still would have been super proud given the country’s subpar qualifying record (see what I did there? XD).

never heard of that weird maneskin/covid theory. but as for duncan: ‘arcade’ is actually still a lame winner entry and there’s no tiktok fame that could change it.

I always wonder what some of you guys think is so lame about Arcade. Musically it’s more complex than you think, the lyrics are excellent, catchy chorus, there’s emotion in it, the vocals are good… I mean, it may not be your taste, but it’s a far from average song.

I agree that it’s finely crafted, but I don’t like slick pop-ballads in general. That’s also the reason why, despite its current success, I don’t think it will be remembered in thirty years from now: It really hadn’t anything new or spectacular to offer. It was produced well in every sense, including the staging. Yet, we’ve seen and heard it all a hundred times before, so it ended up being formulaic and boring.

How many pop songs do you know that have a change in time signature from the verse to the chorus? I don’t think you’ll find a single other one in the Spotify top 100. That’s not what I would call formulaic.

Compared to Spirit In The Sky it is quite lame you can’t deny it.

Spirit in the Sky was quite overrated, I never got why it was appealing for many

Great to see an esc winning song being in the top 50 of the most listened songs in the world in 2021 on spotify even if it’s the 2019 winning song it makes the thing again more exceptionnal. Great achievement too for our esc winners 2021. Congrats for them all!
