Ahoj Česko! After one of the rockiest debuts ever, the Czech Republic has since come into its own at Eurovision. It has cracked the top ten and its national final Eurovision Song CZ has become firmly established on the Eurovision landscape. This year, the Norwegian-Czech alternative pop band We Are Domi will be flying the Czech flag in Turin with their song “Lights Off”.

Czech Republic in Eurovision 2022: We Are Domi “Lights Off”

We Are Domi is composed of vocalist Dominika Hašková, the daughter of famous ice hockey player Dominik Hašek, with Norwegians Casper Hatlestad and Benjamin Rekstad on guitar and keyboard respectively. Casper hails from Stavanger while Benjamin is from Nesodden. The trio met at the Leeds College of Music in the United Kingdom, making the band a true European creation.

The group defeated stiff competition at the Czech national final, including returning performer Elis Mraz. Although they didn’t score as high with local fans, they won with the international fans and jury and claimed the ticket to Turin. After their victory, they posted a simple message to their fans on their Instagram: “Thank you!”

What do the “Lights Off” lyrics mean?

“Lights Off” was written by the members of We Are Domi alongside Oslo-based producer Einar Eriksen Kvaløy and English songwriter Abi F Jones. The song is about the feelings of confusion after a break-up.

The song opens with the feelings of confusion and regret, “I lost my soul, forgot my way, there’s no mistakes that I’ve not made”. The pre-chorus continues by suggesting a discordant identity, “Tried changing jobs, changing lovers, changing my furniture, change my bed covers”. Dominika knows exactly what she needs, but she refuses to do it, “I’d change my heart, but there’s not a chance, so I turn the lights off”. The chorus demonstrates the feelings most clearly, “Where are you now when I need you, you’re sailing around in my peripheral, where are you?” Big break-up feels!

The second verse has a more empowering take on the message, “I’ll ring the changes, make a plan, I’m small but mighty, yes I can”. But even this takes on a slightly darker note, “I’ll build a fortress, I’ll be the wall, I’ll be a queen invincible”, which suggests that the temptation to close off is still there. The third verse continues the dark message, “Once again I’m left without control, I’m far away but can you hear me call, where are you now?” This is a very sad message, accentuated by the upbeat production. However, it’s definitely a message that the audience will find easy to relate to and has a good chance to bring the Czech Republic back to the final.

“Lights Off” lyrics – We Are Domi (Czech Republic ESC 2022)

Written and composed by: Einar Eriksen Kvaløy, Abi F Jones, Dominika Hašková, Casper Hatlestad and Benjamin Rekstad

I lost my soul, forgot my way
There’s no mistakes that I’ve not made
Changes hurt and I’m alone
But people say, ”My, how you’ve grown”

Tried changing jobs, tried changing lovers
Changing my furniture, change my bed covers
I’d change my heart, but there’s not a chance
So I turn the lights off

Where are you now when I miss you?
You’re sailing around in my peripheral
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Where are you now?

I’ll ring thе changes, make a plan
I’m small but mighty, yes I can
I’ll build a fortrеss, I’ll be the wall
I’ll be a queen, invincible

Tried changing jobs, tried changing lovers
Changing my furniture, change my bed covers
I’d change my heart, but there’s not a chance
So I turn the lights off

Where are you now when I miss you?
You’re sailing around in my peripheral
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Where are you now?

Once again I’m left without control
I’m far away, but can you hear me call?
Where are you now?

Where are you now when I miss you?
You’re sailing around in my peripheral
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Where are you now?

I agree with you that they should write both the prequel and the sequel 😀

and they remain one month after as well (with Norway, for me). They are one of the fresh bands which don’t have many places on Czech radios, I can say they are almost unknown and it´s a shame. I hope this will catapult them higher as they deserved. It is quite hard to be heard on the Czech music scene – the radios are playing the four-five bands all-around all day long and the most famous musical award were for years receiving the same people, mostly still from the socialist era. Says quite a lot. I wish them luck, really.

The song is nice, the lyrics are too. It’s not mind-blowing, tho. I think it can be NQ in a strong year, and a Q in a weak one. We’ll see.

It could also be the matter of it being assorted into a strong or weak semifinal to determine its qualification chances. At this point, it’s really hard to judge with only three songs officially selected/released. We’ll have to wait until more songs are out to assess.

I think it’s too soon to write any song off (except for Bulgaria lmao)

At first I felt like the lyrics were quite short of words, but they’re actually telling a whole story! I wish the best luck to the trio and hope they can advance to the grand final 🙂

i wonder why the song isn’t titled “where are you now” since that’s the most memorable lyric in the hook. “lights off” suggests nothing about the song. either way it has since grown on me.

I agree, albeit Lights Off quite fits the song too, as Whisker mentioned.

I said the exact same thing. I’d be looking for where are you now instead of Lights Off its confusing

The vibe in question: H&M dressing room music.

Lights off went ASAP into my daily playlist – it is a very catchy song and her voice is awesome. The only point I want to speak about is the missing “highlight” / “BOOM” in the 2nd half of the song. I think a little revamp could solve that problem and then We Are Domi are ready to shine in the Grand Final of the ESC 2022.

As of now I won’t say it will be shocking.

I agree. This type of electro-pop hasn’t done great at Eurovision in the past. We Are Domi remind me of a more *basic* version of Triana Park (Latvia 2017), and they came last in their semi-final. Whilst the song is great, it’s nothing special. It’s giving H&M or Zara dressing room background noise, which won’t work at Eurovision.

Apollo – I would call the song from Bulgaria this year a flat one and NQ.
