Following the grand reveal of the seven acts competing in Finland’s Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK) 2022, it’s time to hear their songs one at a time. Second up is BESS, who has now released her entry “Ram pam pam”.

The song is written and composed by BESS herself, alongside Jonas Olsson and Tomi Saario.

BESS – “Ram pam pam”

The message of “Ram pam pam” is about how people need to be free and that we should be able to live our lives.

BESS combines electronic pop with house music and this danceable atmosphere comes through in her UMK 2022 entry.

But the party doesn’t stop with the song itself. We can also expect an entreating show from the Finnish star on 26 February, as she says: “I want to put on the world’s best show at the UMK”.

BESS released her debut album in 2019 and it has already racked up 20 million streams. The single “Tempo” even went platinum. She’s also collaborated with other notable Finnish artists, including Nopsajalka, Mikael Gabriel and Raappana.

This is definitely a cool song however I can’t help but think it sounds like Drag me down by One Direction in the verses.

She stole the idea or got the inspiration for the song title by mega hit from Romania, Rampampam by Minelli.

The songs don’t sound alike at all, and if you wan’t to think that every song in the world that shares a title or it’s title sounds similar to another song’s title is plagiarized, then it will be very difficult for you to find a song that isn’t “plagiarized”. Just last year we had two songs called Amen in Eurovision and I don’t think that Vincent and Ana exactly stole each other’s ideas.

“rampampam” isnt exactly the most original phrase for pop songs. i can think of several national final songs over the years that had it in them

I like the finnish language and this one reminds me a litte bit of Ciccolina.

I´m really looking forward for another great preselection in Finland.

This is so good. With the right staging this would slay in Turin

It’s catchy and I like the pre-chorus. By the end it gets a bit repetitive, but still a solid entry and it sticks in my head more than yesterday’s entry.

Can’t this just win already? It’s the kind of bop I feel Eurovision has been missing recently. Very early 2010’s

I just listened to it a few times in a row and I had an idea. Fewer synths and a bit of an electric guitar instead and it would be perfect. Like a love child of Hall Om Mig and Hold It Against Me by Britney.

Ok, I remember saying yesterday that I didn’t expect anyone to be better than Cyan Kicks, but I have to retract.
I’ll admit this has also something to do with my personal taste, but jeez! I didn’t know Bess, but I’m loving this song and the fact that it’s in Finnish gives it a plus 😀

I’m not as enthusiastic about this as some of you. I found it repetitive and felt longer than 3 minutes. The chorus does remind me of Skibidi by Little Big a bit, in a good way. That part is quite catchy. I also like her vocal tone. Perhaps I’ll enjoy it more live.

The chorus is too weak. It almost feels like it has no melody and that ‘ram pam pam’ isn’t addictive enough to make up for that.

Catchy and good, also the music video looks good! Since it’s sung in Finnish 4 out of 7 songs are in Finnish and 3 in English.

Should I expect any less from UMK at this point? Damn, they better not be planning on giving me seven great songs or I’ll just lose it.
Initial thought is that I like this more than Cyan Kicks….but the difference isn’t huge. As Sabrina says, the difference is more down to what’s more to my taste than one song being much better than the other.

Exactly. I think it was BadWoolfGirl that commented in the post for the 1st song that Finland is using the fact it has few entries to do a good quality control. It was what happened last year, all entries had a respectable level and I wouldn’t be mad about 5 or 6 of those 7 getting to Rotterdam. I imagine the same can happen this year.

Solid pop song. It gets a little repetitive towards the end, but I love the fact it’s in Finnish. I still prefer Cyan Kicks though, it’s more up my alley.

This would easily be my #1 for the year so far if it won. I think the final chorus needs just a little more oomph but I’d bet this could be staged really well too.

I like it! The energy and attitude really sells it. My only complaint is the ra pa pa – thing in the chorus. The song flows so nicely and that part kind of breaks it. But other than that it’s great! Cyan kicks remains as my number 1 though.

Of course I expected it to be there but I just don’t like that part. I don’t get why people are disliking my comment so much. I like the song. Just not that one part in the chorus but you’re acting like it’s the end of the world.

Some people simply can’t accept differing opinions. Judging by the way the few critical comments were downvoted, I tend to believe that BESS pulls in an unusually young audience. To put it mildly.

I actually upvoted your comment, it was really sensible but tbf your complaint about the chorus was a bit senseless. I didn’t mean to bash you or anything 🙂

I quite like it. It’s very danceable and the lyrics are fine. If the staging is right and her vocals are fine, it might win.

What I like about this is that it makes me want to listen to more music in Finnish. It’s a naturally rhythmic language so it works soooo well with this kind of song! Loved it 🙂

Love this! “Let me go take stamps on my passport, cause my heart doesn’t dance to your rhythm” is a great line. I’m so happy with the work Yle is doing. Gone are the days of horrendous editions like 2017 and 2019.
