A total of 284 acts tried their luck in Suspilne’s new selection show. But only a tenth of them have made it to Vidbir 2022’s longlist. In a press release, the Ukrainian public broadcaster revealed the 27 names still in the race.
It includes some big names who managed to keep their candidacy under wraps, including Alina Pash and Wellboy, and LAUD, Kalush Orchestra and SHY.
Among the 27 acts still standing in the Eastern European country are many that were included in Muzvar’s early roundup of submission bids. These include Cloudless, Michael Soul, SOWA and ROXOLANA.
With this, the broadcaster has also confirmed that the final number of acts to take part in the Ukrainian selection on 12 February is set to be eight.
Yaroslav Lodygin, member of the Managing Board of UA:PBC in charge of television, said in the press release:
“Because of the pandemic the National Selection has not been held since 2020. Over this time, Ukrainian musicians have obviously accumulated energy and materials, so the number of good applications was very big! Still, there have not been many arguments among the organizing committee members up to this point, and the longlist was formed quite quickly. The fight is for the 8 positions in the final, so the hottest arguments are ahead!”

Kalush Orchestra
Hailing from the Carpathian town of the same name, Kalush Orchestra combines ancient Ukrainian traditions with modern sounds of rap and hip hop. The group uses the the vernacular of its hometown. One of its members, Ihor Didenchuk, already has some experience under his belt. In 2021, he stood on the Eurovision stage as part of Go_A. One of the latest singles the band released, “Shtomber Womber”, is three minutes long. In the comment section, famous rapper alyona alyona replied that she would love to see the song at the contest.
ROXOLANA
Former Holos krainy star ROXOLANA is signed to the Mamamusic label. Although she has yet to break through to the mainstream, ROXOLANA has collaborated with the likes of KAZKA and Nina Matvienko.
LAUD
Having participated in multiple editions of Vidbir, LAUD – whose real name is Vladyslav Karashchuk – was always a jury favourite. He participated in the 2016 edition of Holos krainy, but his Vidbir participations were his big breakthrough. Since those, he has duetted with Tayanna, performed at Atlas Weekend and most recently, released his album Dual.
SOWA
Young singer SOWA, whose name means “owl”, is an up-and-coming artist from Ukraine who is set to release her first album this Spring. In 2021, she collaborated with Eurovision 2018 star Mélovin on the single “Таємний знак”.
Cloudless
Cloudless participated in Vidbir 2020 with “Drown Me Down”, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
Alina Pash
Alina Pash will definitely bring some flair to the contest. The Carpathian-born “Bitanga” hitmaker has been high on fan wishlists for several years. Alongside Wellboy, Alina Pash was one of the young Ukrainian artists to appear on the Tina Karol collaboration album Молода кров (Young blood). Alina recently released the single “Івана Купала”.
Michael Soul
Vidbir 2022 will potentially get a guest from Belarus as Michael Soul has entered the selection. The Belarusian singer has worked from Kyiv since 2021. Eurovision fans might remember him from his attempts to represent his country of birth. In 2019, he was a local fan favourite with the Vlad Freimann-produced (that’s Vlad from VAL) song “Humanize”, but eventually came fourth. He previously sang as a backing vocalist for NAVIBAND at the contest in 2017.
SHY
SHY – that’s Oleksandra Kariagina – has composed several songs for MARUV. Next to that, her first releases were produced by Boosin. Her biggest hit, so far, was in 2019, when she released the duet “Цiлуй мене” (“Kiss me”) with popular singer-songwriter Pianoboy.
Yuliia Timochko
The runner-up of the latest series of Holos krainy, Yuliia Timochko also made the top 27 of the Ukrainian selection. During the television show, she was part of Tina Karol’s team, and her most successful contestant.
Wellboy
Wellboy scored one of the biggest local hits of 2021 with “Husy” (“Geese”). It is likely that the former X Factor participant will bring another original piece to contest. His current music style combines countryside kitsch with rap and alternative pop.
Who would you like to see among the eight finalists of Vidbir 2022? Are your favourite artists on the list? Let us know in the comments down below!
Where is Eria? I cannot believe Ukraine is not including Eria once again. Ukraine could have won Eurovision back in 2017 and didn’t even include her in the line up with the absolutely amazing song “ochi” and now they are overlooking her once again with “mavka” – I am in shock!!! How is it even possible! 0 points for Ukraine this year!
From this list, I am looking forward to Alina Pash entry the most. The girl has an edge, a stage presence, a voice. I hope the song would be something in line with her Bosokarnya.
Lol are you a native speaker? Because lyrics are fine
Dont know dude, but are you aware there are a lot of native Russians in Ukraine?
Are you for real, mate?
Such a shame only 8 songs will be featured, at least half of these acts are Eurovision ready and potential future stars. 🙁
However, I’m sure Vidbir will be a great NF! 😀
At first I wanted Eria, but after listening to “Mavka”, I don’t even feel disappointed that she’s not in the list.
She’s also trying too hard to gain attention. Changing her stage name every year, buying reaction videos, rigging views on Youtube. And it’s not like she’s a real musician with much good songs released
Ukraine always has such interesting acts in their national finals.
YES! Gimme more, gimme more, gimme more 🙂
Mariya yaremchuk, tayanna, anna trincher, sophia ivanko could’ve participated.
Mariya is releasing a very interesting project this year about the work of her father! If you are interested in early Ukrainian rock culture, I think it’s going to be great. 😀
I wanted Kazka and Khayat…. a bit sad, Ukraine is always surprising so let’s see what they have in their bags
Khayat didn’t submit this year and Kazka said they will back in Vidbir next year
They said they might be back next year.
Good names in here, but i liked the songs from Eria and La Festa Opera: they send a really good nature folk vibe song
Can Romania and Ukraine switch formats? It’s disappointing that a country with so much talent and songwriting potential would eliminate the semi final round, especially when it was well watched domestically. Ukraine probably has at least 12 artists that are Eurovision ready here… Unlike others…
LAUD has one of the most fantastic voices in the whole World. He will be a worldwide star soon.
in 2022, we need artists to understand caps lock doesn’t make them look edgier. having said this, can’t want for vidbir and a bit sad that only 8 songs will make it, too little to give justice to ukraine’s music scene.
You have to understand that it’s less of them seeking to be edgy and more that Latin characters in caps are closer to the Cyrillic than the non-capitalised versions.
Yes, but for some reason nobody thought of it before and this tradition came from American pop. Let’s face the truth: the whole caps thing is just mainstream desperately trying to be edgy surface-level underground indie, which wrote this way because “Bandcamp”. It’s not a particularly slavic trend, it’s all over the globe.
Michael Soul, Alina Pash, Loud, Wellboy,Kalush and Claudless…. omg! i can’t wait 😀
Dang, this list is already so promising that it has me wondering if Ukraine will EVER drop the ball and NQ. Their selection is always filled with talent and strong songs, and I don’t think this year will be any different.
Don’t jinx it.
So Ihor from Go_A who is also a member of Kalush band could go to Eurovision again? I like the idea lol
Rumors are saying Eria was disqualified bc she bought many rewires opinion and also rigged views on her Mavka clip… wth? is it could be true?
She definitely rigged the views because 2 days after the premiere there was less than 10k views on her Mavka video and then suddenly on the next day it got 900k views without going into trending or anything
Evria didn’t make it ? Sad
So excited for Wellboy. He’s so loveable and Ukrainians love him for being authentic since he’s the polar opposite of the typical fake glitzy Ukrainian/Russian artists.
He reminds me slightly of Verka Serduchka in her younger years! I loved him on X Factor Ukraine already and thought he would be good for Vidbir. He’s worked hard on his vocals and style since.:D
Yes, Verka for generation Z. That’s why I don’t like him at all.
Ukraine has so many talented artists I’m literally gasping every year. Is this country ever gonna stop surprising us?!
I was hoping for KAZAKY but good participation list. Rooting for LAUD
Forget about them. They toured in Russia and therefore don’t meet Vidbir criteria.
