Citi Zēni won Supernova 2022 – Latvia’s selection for Eurovision 2022. They’ve entered the song “Eat Your Salad”, an upbeat and fun track about the attractiveness of meat-free diets and eco-friendly living.

The band will be hoping to convince the rest of Europe to simultaneously go green and vote for them.

Latvia in Eurovision 2022: Citi Zēni “Eat Your Salad”

Citi Zēni (eng: Other Boys) are a Latvian group who self-proclaim themselves as “rap princes and 21st century pop music divas”. Their music is described as “a jar of fresh tonic, first shaken and then opened”.

The band consists of Jānis Pētersons (vocals), Dagnis Roziņš (vocals and saxophone), Reinis Višķeris (keyboard), Krišjānis Ozols (guitar), Roberts Memmēns (bass) and Toms Kagainis (drums).

They released their first single together, “Vienmēr Kavēju” (“I’m Always Late”), in September 2020. After building up their repertoire through the subsequent year, Citi Zēni dropped their debut album, Suņi iziet ielās (Dogs take to the streets), at the end of 2021.

@wiwibloggs_official There’ll be a #vegan revolution across Europe if #Latvia selects this for #Eurovision 🥗 🇱🇻 #EatYourSalad #CitiZēni #Supernova ♬ Eat Your Salad – Citi Zēni

What do the “Eat Your Salad” lyrics mean?

“Instead of meat I eat veggies and pussy” – an opening line that certainly gets the listener’s attention. But it sets the scene for a song that brings together themes of sustainable living and sexual attractiveness.

Citi Zēni list off all the environmentally-friendly things they do in their day-to-day lives. This includes riding bicycles instead of driving cars, utilising reusable shopping bags, and achieving zero waste. All of this sets them up well for the future – “The karma comes for free and so does luck”.

While the first verse is all eco-friendly, the second verse recounts some of the more provocative activities Citi Zēni hope to do with their green fingers. Filled with a number of sexual references, the group don’t shy away from detailing just how attracted they are to a woman who champions environmental sustainability: “Get your trash can, no back-up plan / And sort through it, bend over, then jiggle that peach (Ayy) / You recyclin’ while I’m loving those cheeks (That’s sweet)”.

These two worlds collide in the chorus, where the group actively encourage us to go vegetarian or vegan to secure a better future for the Earth and note how this characteristic is sexually desirable. The message is also addressed more personally, with Citi Zēni indicating we all individually have the ability to become a sexy, sustainable person: “Eat your salad, save the planet / Being green is sexy as you”.

“Eat Your Salad” lyrics – Citi Zēni (Latvia Eurovision 2022)

Music: Roberts Memmēns; Lyrics: Jānis Pētersons, Dagnis Roziņš, Jānis Jačmenkins (JJ Lush)

Instead of meat I eat veggies and pussy
I like them both fresh, like them both juicy
I ride my bicycle to work instead of a car
All of my groceries are divided by weight and stored in glass jars (Yeah)
Got my reusable bag
That swag, my flex, my flag
Zero waste, that is my jam
Save fuel and sell your trucks
The karma comes for free and so does luck
All aboard the green Titanic
Let’s sail the world and then cruise the Atlantic
No ice in the way, no need to panic
All the signs are there, let’s go organic

Oh, when you eat your veggies
Baby, think of me
Little kitty, don’t you know that
Being green is cool?

Know that being green is hot (It’s hot)
Being green is cool (It’s cool)
Eat your salad, save the planet
Being green is sexy as f***
Being green is hot (It’s hot)
Being green is cool (It’s cool)
Eat your salad, save the planet
Being green is sexy as you

Ring, ring, God damn, it’s an exam (Let’s go)
Get your trash can, no back-up plan
And sort through it, bend over, then jiggle that peach (Ayy)
You recyclin’ while I’m loving those cheeks (That’s sweet)
I’m a beast instead of a killer, forget the hot dogs (What)
‘Cause my sausage is bigger
Three, two, one, all the girls go eco
If you want your man’s dong longer than a gecko’s

Oh, when you eat your veggies
Baby, think of me
Little kitty, don’t you know that
Being green is cool?

Know that being green is hot (It’s hot)
Being green is cool (It’s cool)
Eat your salad, save the planet
Being green is sexy as f***
Being green is hot (It’s hot)
Being green is cool (It’s cool)
Eat your salad, save the planet
Being green is sexy as you

Know that being green is hot (It’s hot)
Being green is cool (It’s cool)
Eat your salad, save the planet
Being green is sexy as f***
Being green is hot (It’s hot)
Being green is cool (It’s cool)
Eat your salad, save the planet
Being green is sexy as

Na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na

Being green is cool (It’s cool)

Being green is hot (It’s hot)
Being green is cool (It’s cool)
Eat your salad, save the planet

The live performance changed my views 180°. After creatively overcoming the p***y, they now sound great, radiate so much energy and … it just looks slick.

I love Citi Z?ni! People getting worked up over the ‘p’ word, remember Robin Bengtsson sang the ‘f’ word in Melodifestivalen 2017 and it was changed to ‘freaking’ for Eurovision? I don’t mind, these guys have so much energy and talent, one word shouldn’t be that big of a deal. Looking forward to their performance tomorrow on Supernova 2022.

This would be fun as a reminder that Latvia used to be the goofy off-kilter country before Moldova came in and bit their flow.

Man, that opening line! When I listened to this song, I tried so hard to not like it, but the music was just way too awesome ( Till now, I’m liking only the instrumental part, not the lyrics) It’s slowly growing on me. Like everyone else, even I wondered what Citi Zeni would do if they won Supernova. Obviously they can’t go to Eurovision with such lyrics, can they? Well, if they win. Aminata is a strong contender, you know. My only favorite for now is Patriks Peterson.

What I’m wondering is how they’re gonna rework the lyrics to remove the profanities if they go on to Eurovision. Since it’s already got a sort of humorous/novelty angle to it, maybe they use sound effects for some of the bleeps? Like a cat’s meow for “pussy” in the opening line. It’s kind of a ridiculous song, but Eurovision lives for ridiculous songs!

There are no profanities there except for the eff word. Tho they could replace “sausage” with “eggplant” to make it greener and more appropriate for the purpose of the song.

It doesn’t quite live up to the promise of its opening line, the chorus reminds me of Kermit the frog. But it would be cool if this made it to Turin.

This is a gimmicky song with a dangerous “green” message. The human being wasn’t built for eating non-animal foods only. On medium and long term, this kind of diet leads to severe health problems and it’s also used by some people to mask issues they already have. If they say they’re fine and healthy and such, they lie. There can be improvements in health and mood, but those are *temporary*. Veganism is a con. It would be great if it worked, but doesn’t. Also, it’s not up to individual behaviour to save the environment and such, that’s up to big… Read more »

i’m not vegan or vegetarian but most people can function on such diets. it’s an ethical choice and if it makes them feel better, then fine. they take supplements and live just fine.

I don’t want to be rude, but when it comes to veganism this is simply not true.

It’s sad that these days people can’t just not like a lifestyle (that’s fine) but also feel the need to come up with complete bogus pseudo-scientific arguments to support their case.

I’ve been a vegetarian for eleven years. My mom’s been a vegan for fifteen. It’s easy as heck to do and it’s better for your health and for the environment.

gurll everyone can contribute to a better and healthier earth, that’s not only up to big companies. You can significantly reduce your carbon footprint by stopping eating meat/ use animal products (which is also great for animals, as they are living beings and not an “industry”) and flying less for example. That’s why I think the message of the song is important, while it’s being brought in a fun and enjoyable way imo 🙂

Bouke spittin facts. Individuals can make a huge difference too, your choices have impacts, good or bad. Also veganism can be healthy or unhealthy (broccoli is vegan, but so are oreos), just like any diet. Just remember to take your B12 supplements! (Vegan of 6 years 🙂 )

another bubble hype!
the lyrics does’nt work in a PC-friendly EBU way.
no danger for aminata or maybe the wildcard winner.

ps.
the video above seems censored – there is no “eat” in the first sentence

How is it a “bubble hype” when this song is all over tiktok and tumblr? It’s more popular with people outside of the fandom than it is in the fandom

and i say you why – it is funny to play with that opening part of the song – tiktok teenagers love making funny things in front of their smartphones – sometimes because of the music – sometimes because of the lyrics (or both) – i have no problem when it is popular on tiktok but tiktok is more a place for teenagers or very young adults and further in their own big bubble. and yes tiktok is very huge meanwhile maybe you have right and tiktok changes the ESC into TIKESCTOK or so if that song wins in latvia… Read more »

A fun, ridiculously catchy televote magnet like this is perfect for Eurovision. they could pull a “we are the winners” if staged properly. My 3rd place and arguably better than Aminata.

Musically I can’t get on board with this but it will definitely get a lot of televotes if it advances to ESC.
