On Saturday evening, national final season continued in Lithuania with heat three of Pabandom iš Naujo! 2022. Six of the twelve acts advanced to the final of the show. They are: Monika Liu, Rūta Loop, Lolita Zero, Gebrasy, Gintarė Korsakaitė and Vilija Matačiūnaitė.

The result was determined by both a jury and televoters, who each accounted for half of the score. Among the jury members were LRT popular music editor Ramūnas Zilnys, musicologist Darius Užkuraitis, songwriter Vytautas Bikus, performer Ieva Narkutė and presenter Gerūta Griniūtė.

This year’s series of Pabandom iš Naujo! has returned to the original format from 2020 after being shortened last year. It includes three heats, two semi-finals and one grand final. A total of 36 acts are taking part in the Baltic state’s music competition, which will determine their artist and song for Eurovision 2022.

The 18 acts that advanced through the heats will perform in the semi-finals on 29 January and 5 February. Eventually, eight acts will make it through to the final and will compete for the right to represent Lithuania at Eurovision 2022.

What do you think about the Pabandom iš Naujo! 2022 heat three results? Are you satisfied with the qualifiers?

I expected i little bit more from Gebrasy and Monika, but they still have time to make a right changes before SF and NF . I’m suprised with Ruta Loop, what a sleeping masterpiece there! Can you imagine how nice it can sound in May? It can really grow to modern version of Nocturne ’95. Best of luck!

Except they don’t have much time, because semi 1 is being recorded today, and semi 2 tomorrow. LRT is rushing because of covid. If anyone’s interested, here are the allocations (running order not known).

Semi 1
Joseph June
Elonas Pokanevic
Erica Jennings
Juste Kraujelyte
Emilijana
Queens of Roses
Gintare Korsakaite
Gebrasy
Lolita Zero

Semi 2
Mary Mo
Vilija Mataciunaite
Urte Šilagalyte
Ieva Zasimauskaite
Auguste
Ruta Loop
Titas ir Benas
Monika Liu
Moosu X

How did you find out about the semifinal allocation? It seems a little inbalanced to me. I was hoping Ruta and Monika would be split. Based on this assignment, Here are my predicted finalists:

Semi final 1:

Gebrasy
Gintare
Lolita zero
Queens of roses/Erica Jennings

Semi final 2:

Monika
Ruta loop
Ieva
Moosu x

That is not an inside information though. LRT posted an article claiming Semi-Final 1 was pre-recorded on 24 January.

The most famous Monika’s moment on tv was when she took a piece of meat (cooked but without any paper or whatever) out of her purse during Lietuvos balsas and ate it. Probably could get some votes in Turin, otherwise could be an NQ.

You know, I can already imagine what Graham Norton would say when it’s Lithuania’s turn to perform.

“ next up is Lithuania with the song ‘Sentimentai’ by Monika Liu. You know, the greatest trick this song pulls is that it lures you into thinking you’re listening to a sultry French cabaret song, but surprise! It’s actually in Lithuanian which hasn’t been present at Eurovision since the country’s 1994 debut – a year they don’t look too fondly back on. Hopefully this song will not face the same ‘nul point’ fate as its long ago predecessor. Enjoy!”

I was just trying to be funny and imitate Graham Norton sardonic sense of humor, but I guess it doesn’t really come through with text . Here’s a highlight video of his Eurovision 2021 commentary. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MtznQCHr1Mc&t=5s. That might give you a better picture of what I was going for. I was trying to be a little more positive and have fun.

Norton’s got some really good zingers like “Germany’s song is like marmite if everyone hated marmite.”

Yeah, Monikas song can go both ways – can be nill , can be top 5. It doesn’t look that Lithuanians are televoting for her with the objective to win Eurovision as much as they are just supporting the singer and they relate to the song a lot.

Monika’s televote is almost at 2020 Roop levels for the heats. No-one is really close either. So yeah, that’s 12 points in the final there and I can’t imagine the jury are going to hit her too hard either considering she won that vote here up against the likes of Gebrasy and Ruta.
In that case, enjoy Turin, Monika.

Didnt see the show and dont know how the live performances were, but I am so disappointed to see Vasha and Geleibra not making it through. Together with Monika Liu they are the best songs in the Lithuanian language to take part ever in the Lithuanian selectio. Geleibra’s song is just beautiful and Vasha’s song is so cool…. With good staging and vocals they all would have had a shot in Eurovision i feel, thankfully it seems like its going to be Monika to win it overall of the ones that are left and I think Lithuania might be in… Read more »

It would have to be an extremely weak year for the Song to make a top 10 finish. I just see it more as a non-qualifier than a qualifier to be honest. I actually do like the song, but I just don’t think it’s strong enough to survive the semi finals at eurovision.

Vasha’s song was a typical Lithuanian radio hit, almost too typical, nothing original about it.
Geleibra’s lyrics were least to say questionable and cheesy, they don’t click well in Lithuanian.
I think these factors put people off from voting

That’s all you can really do. As much as I like the song, I don’t think it will actually do well at Eurovision. There is appreciation that it’s in Lithuanian and that it hasn’t been heard at Eurovision since the 90s but I can actually see it failing to qualify, especially if Lithuania is assorted to a semi final with no allies.

If the song is good enough, semi final draw will not matter.
It only matters for countries whose songs are borderline (e.g. Croatia last year), and those would not be the contenders for high places in the final anyway. Relying on your neighbors saving you is not the way to go (although it works for some countries).

Funnily enough, Monika Liu is the only artist to get the maximum amount of votes in Heats (12+12). She is currently #1. The other qualifiers from tonight’s show: Ruta Loop (6th), Lolita Zero (7th), Gebrasy (11th), Gintare Korsakaite (16th) and Vilija Mataciunaite (18th). Well deserved victory. Like Darius Uzkuraitis said, although she is singing retro music, her capabilities to putty a retro music with electronica elements is what it makes so great. I think that in these never ending pandemic restrictions, people want to re-live those retro-ish times when everything was better because it was back then, then you were younger and the only thing you cared about was to have fun.

Yes, I agree. He didn’t really have the best vocal performance tonight, so I was at first surprised he was fourth, but once I saw the video, I understand why. He needs to really get it together for the semi finals either next week or the week after depending on when he’s performing. Into your arms is one of the best songs from this selection, but that means Jack all if you can’t perform well.

The only reason why Gebrasy got 2nd last year was that there was no competition. Additionally, that song was better than this year. While he is a good singer and decent song writer, his stage presence is not the greatest. A lot of room for improvement.

Though the heats were unbalanced (I can see some acts from 2nd and 3rd qualifying if they were in the 1st), it’s another good year for PiN. The results tonight indicate that Monika Liu is the frontrunner and she totally deserves this status. “Sentimentai” is a great song and her charisma on the stage is impressive. I also love what Ruta Loop does with her song and Gebrasy, if still a little shy on the stage, did it again with a great contemporary ballad. Any of those 3 would do Lithuania proud in Turin.

I would even say top 3 overall, though I still have hopes that Moosu X gets the vocals right, because that chorus is amazing. I guess Ieva is the one stopping you to claim tonight’s trio as the top 3, right? I love her, I just wish she could take more risks with her music. Though the simple emotional songs fit her style and personality like a glove.

Anyway, if a national final can have a top 5 like that, it’s because a country is doing things right. Lithuania feels on the rise with Eurovision.

Colin
Colin

Reply to  Sabrina

Yeah, I’d definitely put Ieva in overall top 5! I agree, it’s not a risky song at all, but it’s a very sweet one, and works for me. 5th would likely be either Urte or Cosmic Bride for me. I listened to Sentimentai once again, and I like it more and more. Monika is certainly hypnotizing, as you said below, and her voice is fantastic. I agree, objectively speaking, Monika, Gebrasy, and Ruta might be overall top 3, each with a top 10 potential in Turin (early to say, but I said *potential*).

Sabrina

Well remembered, Cosmic Bride should be on the mix too. The biggest and unfairest casualty of the heats. And I also like Urte, she would definitely be one of my finalists.

I agree with what you said, Lithuania is on the rise. While selections like Spain, Czech Republic, and Finland will probably have a signifincantly higher average score in my rating than Lithuania (because of the lack of really weak entries), ultimately it doesn’t matter. Lithuanian top 6 (Gebrasy, Ruta, Monika, Ieva, Cosmic Bride, Urte – in whichever order one likes) can easily rival any of these selections, even surpass some. After a prolonged fun in the heats, they deliver quality. I like that approach as much as I like the on point approach of some other countries.

Lolita Zero ahead of Gebrasy and Gintare, and advancing in general, is a tasteless joke. No singing at all. How is it possible it’s in top 3?

Monika Liu will probably win whole thing from what I can see.

Some people like spice. We don’t judge you for preferring mild food (like Gebrasy), we like mild food as well, our palette is just broader, so don’t judge others.

She´s already a great discovery for Europe. I´m looking forward to see her on stage in Turin.

Judging by the results, Monika Liu looks like this year’s winner! She topped both the jury and the televote with a Lithuanian entry, which is impressive.
I’m so happy for her and I hope she wins, she deserves it! 😀

My personal favorite was Lolita. Knowing jury wont let it happen and people are too conservative Monika will win. It is my second choice and very good entry as well. Goodluck to both !

Btw, what’s Lolita’s deal? I was intrigued by the big horns but there really was no singing.

It’s kitsch. People find that entertaining.

The character was created for a movie and Get Frighten was more or less just a publicity stunt. However, the local gay community took to the character so it still existed to some capacity, and this year’s attempt is a more genuine attempt, but because of the way the character is presented it still has to have that certain level of kitschiness

Mozart doesn’t sing either.
You sound like American saying that Eurovision is like The Voice.

Music is not just songs with lyrics and singing. It can be just instrumental, or spoken word. I wish there was more stuff like that in national selections. Would be nice to see some instrumental classic piece eventually (yes, people still make those even after Mozart’s death, woah!).

I was watching PIN full time tonight are here are my thoughts: My winners, shoulder above the rest, are Gebrasy and Ruta Loop. Too bad that their chances of winning are now small. I’m still glad they were somewhat recognized on both fronts. I’ll definitely keep both songs on my playlist and NF top list. 🙂 Monika winning is okay by me. We didn’t have a song in Lithuanian since 1999, and this song is interesting. The lyrics are also good (they are available online). The only thing that makes it less instantly impactful for me is the loungy structure,… Read more »

As a song, I don’t find it good, but as a performance piece, it is interesting. Sure, I’ll remember it more than several others. Even if it wins (which is unlikely, but still a possibility), at least it would give us something to talk about in Turin. An eternal struggle when ranking: Is cringe better than bland or the other way around? 🙂

What if it is bland AND cringe? (I.e. Germany, Poland, North Macedonia 2021?)

Germany 2021 is not an example of that in my book, but yeah, if something was both, it would be dead last (something like Netherlands 2009 comes to mind).

I have put it again, and you know what, it’s less of a cringe I thought at first. 🙂 The lyrics are tosh, and his singing is just okay, but the instrumental actually slaps more than I initially gave it credit for.

Yeah, Monika is a frontrunner now, and I understand that. She was amazing tonight!

Nope. 🙂 Which is why I usually listen to songs at least twice before finishing my lists (which is a task I gladly took, so it’s not hard, but it can mean my ranking can get later than what is average when people are reacting). With most of my favorites, it’s a love at first listen (even if there are far more times a song *really* grew on me than I can count), but if the song is somewhere in the middle, that second take can sometimes be even more vital than the first. That’s just me, though. I perfectly… Read more »

Personally, I always want to root for uniqueness, and I can also look past poor vocals as long as the charisma/performance/visuals are entertaining enough to make up for it… but that wasn’t there for me either. Lolita stood still the entire time! I don’t mind that the song made it, though (and even if it wins I won’t be upset: at least it’s something different!)

Monika Liu could bring the Lithuanian language back to Eurovision, it’s been a long time. Vilija has a rather disappointing song, she was actually one of my faves in 2014, but this one won’t bring much attention.

Seeing the points of the jury and the televote it’s ON: Monika Liu, representative of Lithuania 2022! I will be very happy if she wins because her song is just a monumental masterpiece!! A great presence on stage, charisma, emotions, a just perfect voice, for me Top 5 for Lithuania with her!! When I see the winners from Lithuania in recent years, the jury and the televote usually have the same 12-point candidate so she wins for sure!!! Very happy in advance !! <3 <3 On the other hand, Lolita Zero…….. No comment it’s just horrible, a very weak voice… Read more »
