Sanremo 2022: Elisa “O forse sei tu”

Elisa returns to the Sanremo Festival as a competitor twenty-one years after her only participation. It was 2001 when she won first place with “Luce (tramonti a nord est)”, which has become one of the most famous songs in the history of Italian music. Since then the singer, whose artistic production has always been characterized by the use of both Italian and English, has graced the Ariston Theatre many times both as a guest and as an author.

What do the “O forse sei tu” lyrics mean?

Elisa has convinced herself to return to the competition thanks to this enchanting pop ballad, where the voice of the Italian singer-songwriter moves among a thousand nuances with splendid clarity. It sounds like a hymn to life and the feelings that make it worth living.

The song talks about the “chemistry that there must be in a relationship, the difference that the person you love makes for you”. Understanding each other beyond any silence, being present even miles away, holding each other in a happiness that is colored by the will to live and the “lights of a thousand cities”. The night is the truest and most visceral nest of our thoughts. The loved one, in the dark, in the silence, is like a melody that warms our skin and bones.

“O forse sei tu” lyrics  in English – Elisa (Sanremo 2022)

Written and composed by: Elisa Toffoli, Davide Petrella

Italian text

Sarà che il tempo poi alla fine proprio non ci sfiora
O forse è solamente il cielo
Quando si colora un po’ di più
O forse sei tu, o forse sei tu

Ti capirei se non dicessi neanche una parola
Mi basterebbe un solo sguardo
Per immaginare il mare blu
E niente di più, e niente di più

E chiedimi tu come stai
Se ancora io non l’ho capito
E se domani partirai
Portami sempre con te

Sarò tra le luci di mille città
Tra la solita pubblicità
Quella scusa per farti un po’ ridere

E io sarò quell’istante che ti porterà
Una piccola felicità
Quella stupida voglia di vivere
Sempre, sempre

Sarà che tra tutto il casino sembra primavera
Sarà che la vertigine non mi fa più paura
E guardo giù
O forse sei tu, o forse sei tu

E chiedimi tu come stai
Se ancora io non l’ho capito
E se domani partirai
Portami sempre con te

Sarò tra le luci di mille città
Tra la solita pubblicità
Una scusa per farti sorridere

Sì che sarò quell’istante che ti porterà
Una piccola felicità
Quella stupida voglia di vivere sempre

Mille volte, ti ho cercato, ti ho pensato
Un po’ più forte nella notte
Ancora mille volte
Quella musica risuona in ogni parte
Nella notte

Forse sei tu tra le luci di mille città
Tra la solita pubblicità
Quella scusa per farmi un po’ ridere

Forse sei tu quell’istante che mi porterà
Una piccola felicità
Quella stupida voglia di vivere
Sempre, sempre, sempre
Quella stupida voglia di vivere

English translation

It may be that in the end time doesn’t really touch us
Or maybe it’s just the sky
When it colors a little more
Or maybe it’s you, or maybe it’s you

I would understand you even if you don’t say a word
A single glance would be enough
To imagine the blue sea
And nothing more, and nothing more

And ask me “How are you?”
If I haven’t figured it out yet
And if you leave tomorrow
Take me always with you

I will be among the lights of a thousand cities
Among the usual advertising
That excuse to make you laugh

And I will be that instant that will bring you
A little happiness
That stupid will to live
Always, always

Maybe it’s because among all the mess it seems like spring
Maybe I’m not afraid of vertigo anymore
And I look down
Or maybe it’s you, or maybe it’s you

And ask me “How are you?”
If I haven’t figured it out yet
And if you leave tomorrow
Take me always with you

I will be among the lights of a thousand cities
Among the usual advertising
An excuse to make you smile

Yes, I will be that instant that will bring you
A little happiness
That stupid desire to live always

A thousand times, I have searched for you, I have thought of you
A little louder in the night
A thousand more times
That music resonates everywhere
In the night

Maybe it’s you among the lights of a thousand cities
Among the usual advertising
That excuse to make me laugh a little

Maybe you are that instant that will bring me
A little happiness
That stupid will to live
Always, always, always
That stupid will to live

Why are San Remo’s songs covered in separate posts while other national finals have had much more modest coverage? Please stop the bias before ESC season has even started properly

Ofc that’s true, but it’s disrespectful to the audience here who is very diverse. Anyways probably it’s time for me to start following some other private ESC blog, one where I will not be influenced by bias, but rather where I’ll enjoy all the entries equally.
