“Ciao Ciao” is La Rappresentante di Lista‘s entry for Sanremo 2022. The electro-pop duo returns to the Ligurian Riviera twelve months after a successful debut with the song “Amare” that brought them out of the indie scene and into the Italian musical mainstream.

Sanremo 2022: La Rappresentante di Lista “Ciao Ciao”
La Rappresentante di Lista (also known as LRDL) is a duo formed in 2011 by Veronica Lucchesi and Dario Mangiaracina.
The name of the project (literally “the list representative”) was born when the singer Veronica, in order to vote off-site at the referendum held in Italy in 2011 on nuclear energy, enrolled as a list representative of one of the various political parties.
The two artists define themselves as queer.
“This word has a transversal meaning, without schemes, without classifications, free from gender identity, somehow fluid, not afraid to mix,” they say. “What we do might just be queer, yeah, queer music, even if we don’t deal with proper queer themes in our songs. Our queer pop is the child of our curiosity and the fun that we have in the studio and in the rehearsal room. We feel we are bearers of a fluid identity, because sexuality has no boundaries. We don’t want to be fixed in a gender scheme.”
What do the “Ciao Ciao” lyrics mean?
“Ciao ciao” is an over-the-top tale of the end of the world as seen through the eyes of the duo: a colourful apocalypse in which we must quickly come to terms with the general crisis underway, including climate change and social upheaval.
The body is the protagonist in the refrain: an element always present in the production of LRDL, which in this song becomes an instrument to express dissent.
The musical production of the song draws on a vintage imagery bringing LRDL in a dancehall of the ’70s, between funk and dance. There are explosions of sound as scenes from a film one after another, moving from urban atmospheres to tribal rhythms.
In the lyrics we find the irony of a generation that looks at the future with disenchantment. Is there time for one last wild dance before the apocalypse?
