Slovenia are one step closer to deciding their act for Eurovision 2022. Semi-final one of EMA 2022 took place on Saturday evening with six acts qualifying for the grand final.

The first EMA 2022 grand finalists are Batista CadillacJuly Jones, Stela Sofia, Manouche, David Amaro and LUMA.

The public televote selected three qualifiers and an expert jury chose another three. However, it was not specified which qualifier was chosen by which group.

Both acts who had advanced to the semi-final through EMA FREŠ – Stela Sofia and LUMA – also managed to qualify for the grand final.

EMA 2022: Semi-final one qualifiers

Batista Cadillac – “Mim Pravil”

July Jones – “Girls Can Do Anything”

Stela Sofia – “Tu in zdaj”

Manouche – “Si sama?”

David Amaro – “Še Vedno Si Lepa”

LUMA – “All In”

EMA 202: Semi-final one non-qualifiers

Based on the preview snippets, our readers predicted three of the six qualifiers. They would have put through Bowrain & Brina, Le Serpentine and Jonatan Haller.

EMA 2022: Show details

The show was hosted by Melani Mekicar and Bojan Cvjetićanin.

Each semi-final will feature eight pre-qualified acts alongside two EMA FREŠ qualifiers. There will be six qualifiers on both nights, with the public televote selecting three and an expert jury choosing another three, resulting in a 12 song final.

The grand final is set for Saturday 19 February, where Slovenia will choose their act for Eurovision 2022. The overall winner will be determined by a 50/50 split between the public and a jury made up of five different panels.

What do you make of the results from EMA 2022 semi-final one? Is July Jones, LUMA, David Amaro or one of the other qualifiers set to take home the trophy? Sound off in the comments below.

LUMA, Batista Cadillac, Manouche & July Jones are amazing !!!!

I don’t like David Amaro !!!

I can’t wait for Mia Gucek, BQL, LPS and Klara Jazbek!

As a Slovene I’m really afraid of the finals on 19-th. July is amazing, but her vocals and sound were quite bad. Juries will not place her high and at the same time I don’t think she’ll win the televote either. LUMA would be a good choice as well, but again – they won’t win neither the jury vote, nor the televote. I watch this sharade for 25 years now, each year my heart gets broken again and again and again. To watch EMA as a Slovene is a form of masochism. Out of good options, we always choose the… Read more »

the fact is that in the first semi-final Julie had a bad sound setup, but on her instagram she said that she talked with the sounders and in the final her voice will be louder and better!! So if you are Slovenian, vote for Julie

Batista Cadillac are by far the best in the selection; everything is on point, the song, the lyrics, the choreography, the staging and the vocals are insane. The singer has charisma unlike many others in this selection. A truly underappreciated gem.

Honestly I’d go for LUMA in this SF. The song is modern and the staging interesting. They have chemistry.

July Jones would my second. The others are either outdated or are boring or uninteresting.

Let’s see what’s in the 2nd SF.

This is my favorite for Slovenia:

David Amaro – “Še Vedno Si Lepa”

LUMA would be the best deal so far in my opinium.
manouche maybe next then.

Thoughts: Just the change in background colour distances LUMA even further from zalagasper and elevates the entire performance. It’s enchantingly perfect. I can probably get over it being in English. Batista Cadilac are the suprise of the evening for me. Sounded amazing, and delivered. Manouche are something different but fun. I get why people won’t love them, but they should. July Jones didn’t really sound that great. It might be down to mixing, but the performance was banging. I’m torn on the song. David performed and actually made a great effort. Stella Sofia is a bit of a borderline. About… Read more »

Let it be LUMA, please! They already improved so much!

I would just get a motorized stand for his keyboard so it really looks like she enchanted it. I’d keeps the graphics, lighting and the outfits pretty similar. His suit can stay (love the color) but I’d give her an even more intricate dress.

It’s hard to contain myself because I fear that they’ll get overlooked but I’m so happy for them!

Obsessed with LUMA. They NEED to win. It’s sensual, intriguing, dark and weird in the best way, with great chemistry. I like July Jones but LUMA would stand out a lot more in my opinion, I can’t imagine anything quite like it this year.

Love LUMA. Original, cringe and great tune.

Love LUMA, but that “robotic” performance has to go. Dude’s looking at the camera like he’s on meth. Creepy and cringe at the same time.

I thought so too after the first performance but it is kind of growing on me. I think the narrative of them chasing and challenging each other through the song really works with its dark pop atmosphere.

the biggest problem with the Slovenian selection every year is sound mixing. if it was at a higher level, July would be three times better. Let’s hope they can fix this by the 19th.
from this SF only LUMA and July, the rest can hide and study music until next year or even longer. 🙂

I’m so fascinated with LUMA, they’re impressive for newcomers. My favorites so (and by) far. The qualifiers had to be those 6, since 3 of the eliminated acts had weaker vocals and the other is one of the flatest songs of the season.

I’d never have guessed it from the snippet but girls can do anything is actually really good. There’s hope for Slovenia.

July was phenomenal but technical problems and the sound mixing let down most of the performances

I must say I expected a liiittle more from July Jones (still good, though), but LUMA were phenomenal.

I also kinda liked Batista Cadillac and were happy they came through (they’re not necessarily for Eurovision, though)

Honestly knowing Slovenian juries and voters, I feel LUMA have a better chance than July. I see the juries respecting July to some degree but not putting her to the top and the kind of people who watch and vote in EMA will also not overwhelmingly vote for her, I don’t think. I hope I’m wrong though because she would be an excellent person to send to Turin. As would LUMA. I’m scared something else will win, though. We still have another semi (much weaker judging by the snippets), but I wouldn’t count out someone like Manouche (they are respected… Read more »

Agree with you. Knowing the Slovene juries they’ll give 12 points to David Amaro. July and LUMA will be 4-th or 5-th with both juries and televote. Neither of them has a chance of winning the jury or televote. Televote will be won by BQL or Manouche, but the juries will not give them any points. This could make LUMA or July possible winners. Unless, David somehow gets enough televotes (being second or third), then he’ll pull off a “Omar Naber” and win. I’m really, really REALLY afraid of that. Or Manouche… God help us!

Obsessed with July Jones!! She’s definitely serving something fresh and current that I feel would go over really well in Eurovision if she makes the stage show pop even more. Worried about how the jury will rank her in the final, but my fingers are crossed.

Yes, but the female version always works better at Eurovision.

A really good show from Slovenia, I greatly enjoyed it. Really sad to see Le Serpentine go but hand on heart I knew it wasn’t right for Eurovision and at least I have found a new artist to get obsessed about outside of the contest!

And I may have found a new obsession in LUMA, my goodness that performance is something else.

Lastly, whilst the song is not my cup of tea, I have to say that in Stela Sofia, Slovenia have an incredibly talented young singer, she could be a phenomenon.
