“Girls just wanna have fun” — ROXOLANA asks women to celebrate themselves in “Girlzzzz” lyrics

This girl is one fire! ROXOLANA has made it to the final eight for Vidbir, Ukraine’s selection for Eurovision 2022. She will perform the song “Girlzzzz” — an anthem of celebration that’s reminiscent of the 1983 Cyndi Lauper hit.

ROXOLANA in Vidbir 2022

ROXOLANA is one of the eight finalists of Vidbir, Ukraine’s Eurovision selection for the 2022 contest in Turin. She was born in Lviv and later studied Law in Kyiv. As an actress, she made her television debut in the series Cherhovyy likar.

However, the public really came to know her in 2019 when she participated in Holos krainy. At the time of her participation, she worked as a manager at a Kyiv Oblast agricultural firm and could be seen driving tractors.

Trying to establish herself as a singer, she signed with Mama music, one of the biggest labels in the country, which is also home to the likes of Verka Serduchka and KAZKA — who she collaborated with on the track “Не своя”.

What do the “Girlzzzz” lyrics mean?

Speaking to Timur Myroshnychenko on Hrymerka Yevrobachennya, ROXOLANA said that she initially did not intend to enter the Ukrainian selection. She was surprised to have even made the longlist of 27 names. “There were 300 entries,” she said. “I know that we have great music and that the industry is blossoming right now.” A humble queen for sure!

She wrote the song in English and soon fell in love with it. “I said it’s very cool, and later [my team] heard that it, in terms of format, fits Eurovision.” 

She said that she got the inspiration from singing the line “Girls just wanna have fun” at a soundcheck at Suspilne, which sparked floor personnel to say that she should record a song that sounded like that.

ROXOLANA added that the main message of the song was to tell woman — who face all manner of difficulties — that “one day during the week, they should forget about everything and just have fun”. ROXOLANA says the “fun” part can mean something different for everyone. In Hrymerka Yevrobachennya, she said that her interpretation of “fun” was to sit on the couch and watch Netflix series. Relaxing!
