Vidbir 2022: Michael Soul “Demons”

To Eurovision fans that have been following the selection shows in Eastern Europe over the past decade, Michael Soul — whose real name is Mikhail Sosunov — is an act you will instantly recognise. He first participated in the infamous Belarusian selection in 2016, when he and Egor Sharenkov formed the boyband duo The EM

A year later, he travelled alongside NAVIBAND to Eurovision 2017 in Kyiv, where he was the Belarusian indie group’s backing vocalist. After returning to Belarus, he participated in the country’s selection in 2019. Despite being a local fan favourite, he stranded in fourth position.

Ever since then, Michael has continued to work on his artistry and style. He recently moved from Minsk to Ukraine to further develop himself musically — working together with local artists. Integrating into a new country is no easy feat but he’s determined to learn the local language and has been impressing Ukrainian fans with his attempts to speak the country’s language.

What do the “Demons” lyrics mean?

Michael sent in multiple songs to the Ukrainian selection, but the organising committee went along with “Demons”, a dark pop song. In an Instagram post in November 2021, he explained how the song came to be and what it meant to him. Michael wrote:

“The track was written by me on 9 February 2020, in the place where I have written the majority of my songs (at Alyona Karas’ home, behind her beautiful piano). Exactly there, by the way, after fifteen minutes “Black Friday”, “Knock on my door” were also born there, and what a sin to conceal, the majority of my songs.”

“Alyona left to do things and left me alone at home. I loved it very much when she would do it like that, after all, I could stay united with her magical piano.”

“Only then started all those conversations about how we would be locked up in quarantine from some kind of unknown Chinese virus. On the internet, there was massive panic, an awful lot of informational garbage and hysterics. Watching those events, two lines came to my head:

“What about demons in your head? / They just come at night, and scare you from inside”

“Demons was a metaphor, concerning everything that was happening around. In the post, I attach the first variant, which was born and was recorded on a voice recorder. There, there a small part, which I have played here or there, and it happens to be that you will hear it already on 18 November. There the text comes with small mistakes, but it has been left almost like that.”

“In the further run, I worked on the track in Minsk with Vlad Freimann, Andrey Katikov and Ilya Paliakou, who with their own talented heads and ears made it that way, as you will hear. I know that many awaited the release of that song from me. 1.5 years I poured piece by piece, thinking about that tracks laid in the drawer. I hope that you want to hear “Demons”, after all, it means a lot to me.”

Demons lyrics – Michael Soul

Music and lyrics: Michael Soul, Vlad Freimann and Andrey Katikov

What about demons in your head?
They just come at night, and scare you from inside
Deep inside, baby

Can you feel that smell, it’s from the hell
Smell of sins that you want to forget
Misguided
You’re misguided

Our demons
Our demons
Our demons
Our demons, baby

Pride, greed, lust
Our demons
Wrath, gluttony, envy, sloth
Our demons

I’m your demon
I’m your demon

Tell me what you feel, when your demons come
Oh, they shut you down, force you to disguise
Kill your consciousness, close your eyes
You’re not strong enough to fight these lies
Baby, don’t give up, there’s life inside
Now it’s time to rise, rise and shine
Find the part you lost on the other side

Our demons
Our demons
Our demons
Our demons, baby

Pride, greed, lust
Our demons
Wrath, gluttony, envy, sloth
Our demons

I’m your demon
I’m your demon
I’m your demon
I’m your…

There is Ukraine and then the rest. Always experimenting and trying new things. The most exciting country at ESC and personal favourite.
I love this song.

His song seems so depressing, OMG. I just can’t see a bland song like that representing Ukraine, sorry but it’s a big NO from me…

idk Roxolana came off as more genuine and cool despite her song’s kitschiness

michael soul’s act is so unintentionally comical: from the name to the styling to the fake-deep lyrics and concept that are actually super basic, it all seems like an over-ambitious first year of art school student’s project 😀 he reminds me of “marta la cornacchia”, a legendary x factor audition here in italy, search it up on youtube!

The only singer with that kind of project that didn’t come off as unintentionally comical imo was Rosalía. Her sophomore album – El Mal Querer, was actually her thesis and it’s such a great album!
