Last week, the first heat of Melodifestivalen 2022 kicked off. Two acts made it to the grand final and another two will try their luck in the new second-chance semi-final. This Saturday, seven more acts will perform their songs in heat two of Mello 2022.

Today SVT previewed studio versions of this week’s competing songs for the Mello media. Join us as we bring you our first reactions to the seven competing entries in heat one. Fans will get their first listen of the heat two entries when snippets of the songs are released on Thursday.

Melodifestivalen 2022: Heat 2 first reactions

Disclaimer: The media listening sessions involve the studio versions of the competing songs being played over a video call. This is not the same as the experience of seeing the song performed live so please keep that in mind. We will do our best to convey our first impressions of the songs.

Liamoo – “Bluffin'”

Sample lyric: All the heartbreaks in my life they made me lonely /  I do not wanna fall in love when I’m this cold

Liamoo is keeping within in comfort zone — and things are very comfortable there. “Bluffin'” is a cool R&B-infused pop tune. It has a hint of a pop-drop chorus, but it never takes the spotlight away from Liamoo. The chorus makes the most of the pre-recorded backing vocals rule, with deep pitch-shifted vocals adding a contemporary flavour. The dynamics are great, with plenty of potential for dramatic moments with the staging. Personally, I love this kind of music and this is my favourite track of this week. If the live performance is just as fierce, I expect it will be a strong DTF contender. (Robyn)

Niello & Lisa Ajax – “Tror du att jag bryr mig”

Sample lyric: Se mig hälla drinkar i såren / 1, 2, 3, sen välkommen åter
(Watch me pour drinks into the wounds / 1, 2, 3, then welcome back)

This is very different from the kind of songs Lisa Ajax has previously brought to Melfest. Here, she isn’t playing the diva. She’s very much in partnership with Niello, supporting his contribution and bringing her own flavour. The song is about estranged lovers, each insisting (a little too much) that they no longer care about the other. But a lot of that involves the Swedish lyrics which likely won’t carry to an international audience. The live performance should add more to the story, with the two exes playing off each other. (Robyn)

Samira Manners – “I Want to Be Loved”

Sample lyric: It’s not as if you’ve broken me / Or made my life a sea of misery

Samira was born and raised in Sweden, but she has an English dad and sings with a strong English accent, a sort of London folky-pop. The song is that kind of fragile folk-pop that was big about five years ago. The song starts to build, but never goes much further than the central lyric of the chorus (“I want to be loved…”). I fear that it won’t stand out enough come Saturday’s live show. (Robyn)

Alvaro Estrella – “Suave”

Sample lyric: Suavemente contigo / Suavemente con migo / Dancing slowly / You and me

“Suave” feels like it was written in 2017, in the hype of “Despacito”, and has been sitting around waiting for an artist. There’s a lot going on here. It starts out like a fairly ordinary dance-pop song, then suddenly RAVE HORNS and things get Latino. The Spanish lyrics seem kind of cheesy, but then the whole song is enjoyably cheesy. We know that Alvaro is an experienced and confident performer, so as far as Latino-inspired dance-pop songs go, “Suave” is probably going to end up more polished and more accessible than Omar Rudberg’s “Moving Like That”. Maybe through to the second-chance semi. (Robyn)

Browsing Collection – “Face in the Crowd”

Sample lyric: When the lights go out and the world shuts down / We’ll keep playing

“Face in the Crowd” reminded me the cool female-fronted grunge rock bands that were around in the ’90s, but there’s also plenty of influence from the emo rock of 2000s, as well as punk-pop flavours in the chorus. There’s plenty of attitude, but there was something missing — and I suspect that is simply the extra energy that will come when the band performs the song live. So I’m holding out to see what the live performance is like. (Robyn)

John Lundvik – “Änglavakt”

Sample lyric: Våra hjärtan slår i takt / Jag kommer alltid va din änglavakt
(Our hearts beat in time / I will always be your guardian angel)

I get the feeling that this is the kind of song that John Lundvik really enjoys the most. It’s sentimental, romantic ballad, with no sense of trying to be a Eurovision slayer. As a ballad it seems to be building to a big chorus, but it never quite goes all the way. I suspect the strongest part is the sweet, romantic lyrics — but those will be mostly lost on an international audience. Being a John Lundvik work, it’s well written and well performed, but it doesn’t feel like it will be in contention for Turin. (Robyn)

Tone Sekelius – “My Way”

Sample lyric: Your words made me stronger / And I got bigger, better, smarter

Tone is a trans woman and is the first transgender person to compete in Melodifestivalen. Her song is a self-empowerment anthem, of finding strength and confidence within, even in a tough world. Tone isn’t the most powerful vocalist and “My Way” isn’t a trendy modern pop hit, but she absolutely sells it and has what it takes to create a magic Mello moment. I suspect the live performance will add more depth and emotion and may underscore the message even further. (Robyn)

The ” ah Melfest is so weak ” whining is so tiring. Lets remember that its a national final and its cause is to find 1 ( one ) good entry to represent the country. Its not a mini Eurovision for us to enjoy and complain if we dont like all the songs.

Moreover, we found a great song from the first heat ( Cornelia ) and Liamoo’s song sounds good, we have more heats to come, a good final may come out of this.

Since 2015 included, all contestants representing Sweden and who have performing on the Esc stage (so not in 2020) , were men. Since 7 years now only men have represented Sweden in Esc, it has to change imo, and I feel it will be this year, Klara, Cornelia, I’m looking at you.

The Mamas were also credited with John Lundvik. He was adamant and fought for them to be credited with him..

Were they? Where? At ESC he was introduced before their performances as a solo artist. There was no “ft. The Mamas”.

Gosh, this Alvaro Estrella trying to be cool but he always ends up with an uninspired, dull and blad piece of something similar to “Despacito” whatever trended 5-10 year ago. So irritating. What’s worse, he’ll be getting the ticket to the final.

He’s the typical grown adult trying to fit in with the youth. I’m surprised he hasn’t tried to imitate the likes of Reik or Danny Ocean xd

Based on this and afonbladets reviews Melfest is really going on a downward spiral.
Imagine Alvaro having the strongest song in the semi with those cringe lyrics? Melfest and Sweden need to change some things up and move on from the 2011-2015 era and mentality if they once again want to give us a worthy festival.
Ps. No hate to melfest and Swedes just my opinion

I started watching Melodifestivalen in 2018 and the songs that year were bland but in 2019 they were much better. Not to mention 2020 and 2021. This year is so weak, but it looks like it’s a trend lol
They don’t need to change anything drastically, just to pick some more original songs and be a bit risky.

I think different countries has their own successful eras, Sweden had the 2010s, Ireland in the 1990s and I guess Italy now in the 2020s. I think in Swedens case many artists and record companies don’t find MF interesting anymore and also waste of time and money. They see no future for their artists in the competition, not even in ESC. Therefore we get these bland and boring songs. SVT is like, well we choose what is mainstream now and hope for the best more or less. It has become much more of a entertainment show to fill up the… Read more »

I still think Cornelia might be The Mamas (2020), Loreen 2012 and Benjamin 2018 and win from 1 heat BUT i still think Liamoo has good chance to challenge here, also Anna, Klara, Cazzi, Anders.

Would looove to see Swedish song winning tho….
+ as we saw last week – performing first and last – is not always garante that u will qualify to the final or andra chance (semi 5) – i remember Malou was eleminated, also Margaret in 2019, Felix and Anna in 2020/2019 made it to the ACH only and they performed last.

thank yiew!<3 so from what i gather:
liamoo = trendy pop-r&b song
niello x lisa ajax = pop-rap ballad (that i’ll probably end up loving)
samira manners = quirky kate nash-esque folk (that i’ll DEFINITELY end up loving)
alvaro estrella = same seaside resort type of song as his usual
browsing collection = dated rock quota that every nf seems to have this year
john lundvik = regular ballad
tone sekelius = dated pop with flat vocals

Kosey
Kosey

Intriguing that you only call out the rock entry as being dated? Yet for others, entries with strong historic influences you think you are going to love? It’s not like folk music hasn’t been around for centuries or anything and pop-rap is hardly a new phenomenon is it?

He said the same thing about Tone. Some things just don’t date, they are time-proof. Other things fade fast, because they were only ever based on the fashion of when they were made.

Ooh, enticing! Alvaro gives me my annual slice of Spanish-themed summery bops so can’t wait to see what he has in store for us this year.

And if we have an artist like L7 then I am really going to enjoy my Saturday night!

Nah I read Aftonbladets first impression review as well and when they say Alvaro Estrella seems to be one to beat this heat there is no hope for any song to be good to be honest LOL
That is what I base my assumptions on, but hey who knows I might be surprised on Saturday…

Aftonbladets needs to go …. they have predicted Mariette (2020), Dotter 2020 to be out of semi and Dotter 2018 to win whole Mello …. So their taste is not always right regarding who qualified and who not

Haha I am not hating on MF or something like that, it is more that if no review given any WOW-moment reviews and they describe all songs abit lackluster, of course I make assumptions that the songs aren’t that great that heat then. Last week at least some reviews did highlight Cornelia but that was the first week and nothing to compare to. If any of the reviews this week were like “Well this can be serious contender to last weeks DF acts” or something like that of course I would assume the songs to be good this week then.

Well yes but then any song is not perfect. There are always big expectation from Sweden, and people from an abroad did not care about Melo before 2012. I guess some songs (studio version) are sometimes a bit boring but u need to listen them more times or see live performance ( as an example would be Klara Klingerstom from Melo 2021) – i did not care about the song but when i saw her in Semi – everything came together…. Sometimes u need to enjoy things and do not have an expectations (Saying it generally)
