Germany 12 Points

The selection show is called Germany 12 Points. But do the six finalists revealed in Deutschland’s national selection stand a chance of securing top marks at Eurovision 2022? The national final will air on March 4 — that’s a Friday — and the result will be determined by the public alone. But before the show hits the airwaves, it’s time to listen to the songs and meet the artists.

Germany 12 Points: Six artists and songs revealed

Emily Roberts — “Soap”

A singer-songwriter from Hamburg, Emily recently toured with James Blunt. In 2019, her cover of “Bitter Sweet Symphony” with DJ duo Gamper & Dadoni went gold in both Germany and Austria, spending 13 weeks on the German charts. German TV viewers may or may not realise they’ve heard her music before. Her song “In This Together” served as the theme song for the German edition of I’m A Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here!  in 2020. Her love of culture and music started at home thanks to her parents, a photographer and musician. Her father remains a big musical inspiration.

Emily made it clear to NDR that she understands Eurovision is about much more than music. She said:

“For me, Eurovision is all about harmony, inclusion and a celebration of diversity. For one evening, we’re all focused on something we all love: music. My song has a story that everyone has experienced before. It describes the feeling of wanting to finally get ‘that one person’ out of your head, and wraps the whole thing musically in soap bubbles and distorted guitars.”

Eros Atomus — “Alive”

Singer-songwriter Eros has a unique worldview: He has dual citizenship from Denmark and Switzerland. He says his personal style has been influenced by his travels around the world, as he’s lived in the US, China and The Netherlands. In 2018 he participated in The Voice of Germany and finished fourth in the final.

He told NDR: “The past few years have been difficult for all of us. With my song ‘Alive’, I’d like to open people’s eyes and show them how great life can be, with all its highs and lows, even in the pandemic. Everyone has problems in life but there’s one thing we all have in common and should never forget: it’s great to be alive!”

Felicia Lu — “Anxiety”

We’re not saying Bye, Felicia — we’re sending a big hello. Eurovision fans should be familiar with the “Anxiety” singer. She participated the Germany’s national selection Unser Song 2017, but was eliminated in the first round. Born in 1995, she grew up near the Austrian border and now lives in Vienna where she works as a songwriter for herself and others. She received her music education and vocal instruction in the direction of popular music at the German Federal Academy of Music.

Speaking about her song, she says: “I think everyone’s familiar with feelings of stress and anxiety, and it’s vital to speak openly about these anxieties we all have. So I put my feelings into a song. I hope it’ll help people who listen to it to feel a little better understood. I want to send a message that anyone can be who they are, that you don’t owe anything to anybody but yourself, that everyone has the potential to achieve their dreams.”

Maël & Jonas — “I Swear to God”

Similar to Junior Eurovision star Pauline, this duo hail from the city Koblenz! The pair consists of Maël, 25, and Jonas, 19. They have been collaborating on music for three years They reached third place on The Voice of Germany in 2020. Their single “Treat You Right” — released with The Voice coach Nico Santos — has over two million streams on Spotify.

They’ve described their song this way: “We’ll stand there on stage as two friends and show how we’ve stuck together through thick and thin down through the years. We want to share a little of our positive energy and bring a smile to people’s faces.”

Malik Harris — “Rockstars”

This 24-year-old is ready for the good times to return. A German-American pop singer, rapper and songwriter, he’s already enjoyed positive reviews of his song, which dropped last Friday.

“I’d be so proud to represent Germany with my music on an international stage. In Rockstars, I lay my feelings bare, and I can’t wait to perform the song live and share it with a big audience. It’s a song that has incredible personal significance for me and offers a glimmer of hope in these difficult times, while also showing people that we’re all in the same boat.”

Nico Suave & Team Liebe — “Hallo Welt”

It’s been four years, but we finally have another song in German. Nico Suave is a German rapper who hails from Menden, Sauerland. Through the song — which translates as “Hello World” — he and Team Liebe (EMY, NKSN and Buket) hope to encourage people to create space in their heads for positivity and to feel more connected with one another.” This is all about good vibes:

“We want to convince the audience with a mixture of rap, soul and good energies. Our anthem is addressed to the world; we ask ourselves why it’s so hard to find and hold on to happiness. It’s a feel-good song that’s intended to get people dancing.”

About Germany 12 Points

The artist reveal took place in an online event hosted by ESC-Songcheck presenter Alina Stiegler.

We learned that the six songs were selected from 944 applications. Head of Delegation Alexandra Wolfslast oversaw the jury, which included music experts from ARD radio pop waves (Antenne Brandenburg, BAYERN 3, Bremen Vier, hr3, MDR Jump, NDR 2, SR 1, SWR3 and WDR 2).

Juries played a role in getting Germany to this point, but now their job is done. Germany’s national selection will be 100% decided by a public vote.

This vote comes from two different streams — TV viewers and radio listeners — each of which count for 50% of the overall vote.

TV viewers can vote during the show. But radio listeners from ARD’s nine pop radio stations can also visit the stations’ web sites to let their voice be heard. The radio voting opens on Monday 28 February and closes at 20:00 CET on 4 March — just before the live TV broadcast at 20:15 CET.

The national final will be hosted by Barbara Schöneberger, the spokesperson of Germany for the past few years. Special guests will also perform at the national final.

Press conference questions

During the press conference, we asked some questions that came to us from our readers via Instagram.

Alexandra Wolfslast explained that only fans in Germany will be able to join the online voting. IP addresses from outside Germany will not be able to vote.

A live audience is a possibility but it is not yet confirmed. Due to the situation with coronavirus, producers have no choice but to monitor the situation. They will keep you posted as the picture becomes more clear.

There will be a special programme to warm up the audience before the national final starts.

Unlike in previous years, this year’s national final will not be broadcast live on das Erste. But all regional TV channels will broadcast the show. This is a new approach taken by ARD, as Frank Beckmann, ARD Entertainment Coordinator and NDR Program Director said, “the whole of ARD is coming together to find the best show in Turin for May.

International fans can watch the national final on eurovision.de.

Although das Erste is no longer broadcasting the national final, it will host a special programme. From February 21st, it will air ESC vor acht (ESC before eight) Monday to Thursday at 19:45 CET. The program will introduce the history of the ESC, as well as the 6 acts participating this year.

What do you think of the 6 songs that are participating in the German final? Which song do you like best? Are you excited about the new voting method? Let us know in the comments below.

As a german ESC Fan I am dissapointet in the lack of variety that is presented to us … I really like some of the Songs ( Anxiety has been stuck in my head for the last few days and will probably get my vote) but they are all mind of the same and thats whats bothering me. We have so many good and diverse Artists in this country that are willing to compete but are not givin the chance because they are not “radio friendly” enough… and I am not talking about Eskimo Callboy alone. This is actually a pretty decent line up. I can say I like all of them. Do I love any of them? Well, maybe that’s the problem. All of them are radiofriendly and enjoyable but lack the material to make an impact or put a show. They just sound nice. That’s 0 points material? Maybe, but none of them would deserve those 0 points. I don’t know… I do get the negativity cause this kind of songs fall in the middle of the road and tend to go unnoticed, even though people like them. My top: 1.     Maël & Jonas —… Read more »

None of these songs are bad, I’m even sure that some of them would end up in the German charts (if at least partially sung in German) but the reason for this uproar is, that we have artist that are not so generic – much more suitable for a competition. After listening to all songs twice none of them are stuck in my head. Many Eurovision viewers are not even going to listen to theses songs twice, not a single song in here is really 100% suitable for Eurovision. It’s like shooting for tree branches while others are shooting for… Read more »

The German broadcaster is the main reason for the streak of bad results. I don’t deny that us Germans generally have a poor taste, too. But as for the last couple of years, you can rightfully blame NDR for every single disgrace.

Just take a look at this dull selection. We don’t even get a chance to vote for something that could avoid the bottom five.

Germans are not accepting this rigged national selection process.
There is a petition with over 27,000 signees already to nominate Eskimo Callboy.

Let’s all sign, please! I’m not even a huge fan of that song/band, but at least it’s not generic Flop5 radio-friendly music that the unprofessional ARD-team have put together in this Top6.

Given all the criticism here, I must say that I thought it all wasn’t that bad when I listened to the songs. It all remains to be seen how they’ll do on stage, I admit there are more creative national selections this year, and for a country the size of Germany it’s not a very varied field. But I must say I do like Felicia’s and Emily’s songs, and Malik’s and Maël & Simon’s are quite passable too.

All these comments about Germany not wanting to bear the costs of hosting. Remember it wasn’t that long ago Germany won the whole thing in convincing style. And of course the way they hosted the following year would of cost a bomb. No wonder they might be wary of winning again too soon. Obviously though the contest doesn’t have to cost as much as it did in 2011.

There ist actually a petition with (right now) more than 17000 signings to bring Eskimo Callboy back in the race via wildcard. It’s just ridiculous, embarrising and infuriating that NDR didn’t even choose them for the NF…

I am not a fan of their song, but I agree – at least the song would stand out in all those blunt radiosongs. You *could* argue that the NDR wants to avoid any controversy regarding the Bandname (even though they seemed willing to change their name) but honestly, I think the radiostations just didn’t vote for it…

By far only one choice here: Felicia Lu and “Anxiety” – great song with a great beat and great lyrics. NDR has been in charge for Germany’s Eurovision entries for 27 years now and still has no idea how to choose a good entry or host a succesful national final. I’m so tired of them changing the selection process literally every single year. 2012: encouraging power voting by showing live voting results on screen 2013: over-complicated voting system (radio/online, jury, televote) 2014: 2-song system where we don’t get to see all songs in the NF 2015: same system and letting Andreas Kümmert turn down victory 2016: Xavier Naidoo gate 2017: low budget casting show with basically only 2 mediocre songs… Read more »

I was rooting for Eskimo Callboy, they had the biggest chance to place a top spot. Without being to negative here: The current selection is just weak. From what I’ve read, the ESC responsible channel NDR don’t want to send good songs on purpose because they think it’s too expensive to host ESC. It’s embarrassing for a big 5 country and disrespectful to the small countries. There has to be something that has to be done, hand over the selection and the broadcasting to another competent broadcaster that is not ZDF or ARD. The voice of the people is not enough, there should be more big artists voicing out concerns about this monstrosity. Because it’s not like Germany doesn’t have a fantastic music culture. I’ll be honest, and say that my first comment wasn’t that bad before I gave in to the sorroundings and agreed that the selection is bad. The truth is – it’s not. In fact, Anxiety and Rockstars are even kinda good. I can see them growing on me from the second take. Three other songs are also very listenable. I think that a lot of us came disappointed because we want Germany to have a great result, and having mid-tempo radio-friendly song often tends to result in being low on scoreboard. Great that you personally may like them but I don’t. I can only somewhat stand “Anxiety” and even that one gets boring very quick. But my personal taste doesn’t matter. What matters though is that even if you absolutely love these songs you HAVE to admit that they completely lack any diversity. 6 radio pop songs? That’s all we get to choose from? Not acceptable. And especially if there are only 6 songs to pick they should be great. But considering who you ask 1-2 are “ok”. Just ok. Or “listenable”. I swear to God is my favourite here (we don’t see enough cricket jumpers in Eurovision). It seems the most authentic of this selection for me. We don’t finish in the bottom five each and every year for no reason. Our broadcaster has diminished the public interest in the song contest for many years now and only ever served us mediocrity and cringe. Interesting, edgy newcomers don’t even get invited. As a consequence, basically all big and popular artists shy away from participating. Sure, but I very much believe there was some honesty behind it. Just compare the views and streaming figures of those who were selected with those of Eskimo Callboy. Just going by the national and international popularity, it would be utterly insane to leave them out of the selection if they really wanted to win.

EC applied with two different songs and were rejected with both of them. The point is not that we would have won Eurovision with them but that both their songs were rejected because of the 6 chosen ones. Maybe they should have applied with this as the second song to have a more serious one, here they used sounds from their homeland (disused industrial site in the Ruhrpott): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGMEPCi1ZZw

Don’t vote for Germany in May. Our broadcaster said they don’t want to win (the program director literally said this). They picked mediocre songs ON PURPOSE and ignored good ones. They know they won’t do that well and don’t care for the consequences for the artists, that’s why they always pick small artists so they don’t ruin a big name… just small ones.
Don’t reward them with a decent result. Just don’t bother, they are garbage.

I mean, wouldn’t the best punishment be to actually make them win and be like “Have fun organizing the contest next year”? 😀 Seriously though, I feel like Germany has had a lot of bad results recently but also quite a few good ones. They won 10 years ago, and since then they’ve done three top 10 (would have probably had a fourth one with Ben Dolic). Could be better, but still shows efforts every couple years. I mean, when I see the UK, Spain, Latvia or N. Macedonia who are literally knee-deep in mediocre results, I think Germany is… Read more »

Well it’s easier to ask for less votes than to make us win :’D We won and did decent when Stefan Raab was responsible for the german act and he was until 2012. Then the NDR took over and the only Top 10 result then was Michael Schulte who personally invested a lot into his success and probably got lucky. The national final that year was really bad though. They did not try at all. They never really tried. Every wondered why the S!sters and Levina only stood alone on stage? Or why Jendriks background dancers were his friends? Because… Read more »

Outrageous if true. And if that’s the case, wouldn’t it be cheaper for NDR to just withdraw from the contest? xd

Yet the participation fee itself is comparatively cheap and very good value for money, as the viewing figures for the Grand Final always high. Nobody watches the Semis and the National Final, though.

Yeah, but it’s not like they can’t broadcast the contest without participating if they don’t want to afford to host.

True, but just like the BBC, RTE or most western European countries, they’d always send something to show support for the European idea – and it because it would otherwise give them a bad look. Obviously they just don’t care too much, what they send.

Btw, I love that they are participating just for the sake of it. But there’s no need for NDR to turn Germany into the butt of jokes all the time. Like … give us a break. At least for once. 😀

I’m suprised with such negativity from the comments below, particularly from our German friends. Some of these songs really have a potential to do very well come what May. They have gone for the rock/pop indie route. Good on Germany.

UMK got about 300 submissions, just saying.

That selection is yet again so bad we should owe points instead of getting any of other countries 😀

This makes me sad. All we wanted was Eskimo Callboy (at least in the national final). Now they gave us 6 songs in the same genre. No diversity. Just radio friendly songs we’ve heard a million times. ?

An opinion from a German:

NDR is so fking stubborn. They just never learn their lesson. Year after year they send a dull song which has not even any potential to finish higher that 26th (25th) place… e.g. Jendrik instead of a second chance for Ben Dolic… Sisters, Levina, Jamie-Lee, Ann Sophie…
Although I really dislike Eskimo Callboy’s song, that would have been a chance to get a decent result.

I’m going for Felicia. Maybe we’ll finish 20th.

Take NDR out of charge.

Over and out.

That’s just typical behaviour you will find in many aspects of german culture.
Always doing the same stuff, failing, being hated for it and then doing it again and be surprised why people don’t like it.

I’m not sure how much is to blame the broadcaster in german “success”. I mean, of course, huge part of failure is on them but I see problem not only in NDR. As a person living in Germany, I would say that music industry here “currently” really sucks. So I am not surprised that quality for Eurovision is bad, too. I understand that these two things are not much correlated, but still. Of course, according to this logic Britain and France must show for example always the good results but it’s not about the world famous names etc. Just the… Read more »

In My Opinium this ist Not Bad. I actually really like the songs. But I think they Night ne a Bit too forgettable for eurovision. With a really good staging i could see rockstars or anxiety reach like 15th to 20th though

At least it’s a lot better than the stuff the baltic countries have to offer this year. I really like “I swear to god”

Says a lot since that was the only moment with a hint of real emotion in the whole selection.

For me, it stands between Emily Roberts and Felicia Lu.I’m not gonna come out and say the selection is bad, but the songs aren’t really that great either. They don’t hurt nobody, but that also means they miss an “edge”, which makes them stand out as memorable.

Yes, and therefore they’ll once again fail, just like “Black Smoke”, “Sisters”, “Ghost” and “Perfect Life” did. These six are the songs to submit if you actively aim for a bottom five finish.

For me, Malik Harris (Rockstars) has chances for a good place. And Felicia’s song is ok
