After a few years away, Malta Eurovision Song Contest is finally back. The 2022 edition of MESC kicks off on Thursday night, with 22 acts competing in the semi-final.
Ahead of the show, we asked you to vote for your favourites based on the studio cuts of the participating songs.
You responded to our call and cast a total of 3,167 votes.
These votes have been totted up and now it’s time to reveal the results…
AIDAN is a favourite to win the MESC 2022 semi-final
Taking the top spot in this poll, by a strong margin, is AIDAN. His fiery pop song “Ritmu” (“Rhythm”) earned 645 votes, which is 20.37% of all those cast.
Having attempted to reach Eurovision a number of times before, AIDAN is back in 2022 with possibly his best shot yet. A front runner with fans since the song reveal, AIDAN is hoping to bring the Maltese language back to Eurovision for the first time since 1972.
Your silver medal goes to Emma Muscat. One of Malta’s biggest exports, Emma has had a number of hit songs in Italy. She’s racked up millions of streams for her tracks and millions of views for her music videos. Now Emma has come back to her home country to fight for the ticket to Eurovision 2022, which just so happens to be in Italy this year.
At MESC 2022, Emma will be singing “Out of Sight”. Y’all awarded the song 467 votes in this poll (14.75% of the total).

Two other acts managed to pick up more than 200 votes. They were Nicole Azzopardi, who received 251 votes for “Into the Fire”, and Matt BLXCK, who earned 213 votes for “Come Around”.
Rounding out the top five is Eurovision alum Jessika. She represented San Marino at Eurovision 2018 but is now hoping to return for her home country. Jessika’s entry “Kaleidoscope” secured 149 votes.
Ultimately, 16 acts will qualify for the grand final of Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2022. If the results were up to y’all, the six artists we’d have to say goodbye to would be: Francesca, Raquel, Norbert, Malcolm Pisani, Sarah Bonnichi and Mark Anthony Bartolo.

MESC 2022: Show details
Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2022 will take place between 17 and 19 February. The shows have been given the slogan What a feeling.
The 22 acts will compete in the semi-final, with the jury and public televote choosing 16 of them to qualify for the grand final. During the grand final on Saturday 19 February, one act will emerge victorious and go on to represent Malta at Eurovision 2022 in Turin.
The show on 18 February has been designated a separate “special night”.
MESC returns after a three-year break in which Maltese broadcaster PBS used the X Factor Malta and internal selection to choose its act for Eurovision.
What do you make of the results? Are AIDAN and Emma Muscat also your personal top picks of MESC 2022? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
I am very sorry to say that after hearing all the songs yesterday I was hugely disappointed. The level of the songs this year is extremely low and it is not just the lyrics. The musical compositions and the singing was in most cases actually very low and at times even bad. The great majority…. no all the songs are simply forgettable and that is being very very kind. There is not one song which really stands out or one that you would like to listen to a second time. They are basically all the same level. The judges and… Read more »
Ritmu is good, catchy and I don’t mind this winning. As for most of the songs in English, who wrote these lyrics? Some of these are the strangest lyrics i have ever read, bizarre more likely. LOL. I think this was noticed before in an article. If there is a Barbara Dex award for bad taste clothes , i think Malta should be given he award for the equivalency in lyric writing in their national final. Brings a smile though , complete nonsense at its best.
Go Jessika!
I only like four acts:
Only Miriana Conte!
How much say does the public get this year in Malta? I know in previous years the televote has counted for very little sometimes
I’ll answer my own question here – the public vote counts for 1/7 of the overall result, so the public don’t really get much influence
1. Aidan – Ritmu
2. Derrik – II
3. Nicole Hammett – A Lover’s Heart
I don’t care for the rest.
Whoever voted for Aphrodisiac clearly hasn’t paid attention to the lyrics.
At least he’s handsome…
I’m guessing one of them will win. Anyway I think something is missing in their songs. I don’t know if people will remember them after hearing 18 songs during the semi.
Strong is not quite the word I’d use.
I have only heard Ritmu, so I can’t compare it to other songs, but I really enjoyed it! I love the Maltese language, I would be very happy to hear it in May!
Not fond of Malta’s selection at all. I didn’t like Ritmu despite the use of Maltese, and pretty much all the other songs are very unimpressive. The only one that kinda gives off a vibe of ‘it’s so bad that it gets good’ in my opinion is Electric Indigo, and even that is a song I find very… very mediocre. I’m feeling like Malta will stay in the semifinal this year
Like from 2016 to 2017. Wasting tons of money for as a jury pet and televote loser and then throwing in the towel completely.
