It’s been two long years since we’ve had a national final in Iceland. But that wait is officially over, as five acts performed on stage for Söngvakeppnin 2022 semi-final one. In the end, two acts qualified to the grand final – they were Sigga, Beta & Elín and Stefán Óli.

We witnessed everything from a Bollywood-themed ode to the volcanic eruption in Fagridalur, to soft guitar-strumming pop – and the excitement was palpable! Especially since the Covid restrictions have officially been called off in Iceland, and therefore there was a jam-packed audience in the hall tonight.

The results of the semi-finals is purely down to the public. A televote chooses two acts to qualify for the grand final.

Söngvakeppnin 2022 semi-final one qualifiers

Sigga, Beta & Elín – “Með Hækkandi Sól”

Stefán Óli – “Ljósið”

Non-qualifiers

  • Amorosis – “Don´t You Know”
  • Haffi Haff – “Gía”
  • Stefanía Svavars – “Hjartað mitt”

Of the six non-qualifiers from both semi-finals, a jury will then select one wildcard act to complete the five-song grand final.

Söngvakeppnin 2022: Show details

Söngvakeppnin 2022 features two semi-finals and one grand final. The hosts of all three shows are Björg Magnúsdóttir, Jón Jónsson and Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir.

In each semi-final, all the acts must perform their song in Icelandic. Those that reach the grand final must then perform in the language they intend to sing at Eurovision, should they win Söngvakeppnin 2022 and be selected as Iceland’s entry.

The results of the semi-finals will purely be down to the public. A televote will choose two acts to qualify for the grand final. Of the six non-qualifiers, a jury will then select one wildcard act to complete the five-song grand final.

In the first round of the grand final, a 50/50 split of viewer and jury votes will determine the two superfinalists. The final decision in the superfinal will be made solely by public vote.

At Eurovision 2022, Iceland are scheduled to perform in the second half of the first semi-final on 10 May.

What do you think? Are you happy to see Sigga, Beta & Elín and Stefán Óli qualify from semi-final one of Söngvakeppnin 2022? Shout out your opinion in the comment section below.

Warning! SERBIA OUT!
Serbian President Vucic has signed a conclusion by the National Security Council, which the EU should carefully read. Core message: No sanctions against Russia. Serbia will be a safe haven for Putin & his criminal elite. Russia may do business via its Serbian ally.

Sigga, Beta & Elín Is a well deserved qualifier. Stefan is soooooooo boring and he needs a stylist! Haffi Haff should have being the second act qualify to have something funky in the final

Who was the guest performer with the new version of Yohanna’s “Is It True”? That was absolutely the best act of the night.

Stefania was my favourite from this semi since the release, but it’s not that big of a deal to me tbh since I didn’t really care for any of these songs.

I guess many fans will consider Sigga, Beta & Elín’s song boring, but I really like their “hippie aunts” vibe. Their performance remembered me of old times’ Eurovision. Very soothing and natural. But since they don’t move much on the stage, the cameras should do a little more for it.

I’m fine with Stefán getting the other spot in the final, but the semis in Iceland seem very unbalanced. There are 4 acts in the 2nd one I expect to do better than him did tonight.

Yeah, the sisters’ staging was great! I was kinda surprised to see that it was very country oriented, but it’s nice. I hope they win in the end and maybe even Eurovision!

I guess Marketa’s performance will have a similar vibe, so I wonder if they won’t cancel each other. The final has just 5 acts after all. Anyway, we’ll have a better idea next week.

They remind me of First Aid Kit, I don’t know if that’s just because they are sisters.

I can see that too! Maybe it’s because I come from a family with zero musical talent, but it appeals to me this idea of families making music, especially siblings.

Sisi Ey were fantastic, they captured a really powerful mood, definitely deserve their place in the final.

Haffi Haff was perhaps the most bizarre thing I have seen for a while. I am all for something out the box but this was sensory overload.

Answering my own question: it was GusGus with Márgret from Vök. If you like indie-electro-ambient-pop (or whatever how we could call it), you should definitely check this performance. It was amazing.

They are the best band in the world <3 And funnily enough their vocalist Daniel August participated in ESC in 1989 and came last.

I’ll definitely check their music. And I hope they release the cover, because I need it in my playlists along with the original.

Ahh, the sisters did qualify! Along with Stefan Oli, he’s fine I guess. But, Amarosis was my favorite ever since the songs were released. They were really good on stage too. I don’t even know why there have to be semifinals when there’s only ten songs???
