Julia – one of the 12 acts competing in Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez 2022 – says “Chut” (Hush) to all those who want to put her in a box. The young singer with the aura of France Gall wants to say goodbye to prejudices. During an interview with wiwibloggs, she talked to us about her ideas and her life’s struggles.

Underneath her bob haircut, Julia is a woman who asserts herself and knows what she wants. At 20 years old, the young artist has always been involved in music. Born into a family of musicians, she has been singing since she was a child with her mother and sister.

After taking singing, guitar and piano lessons, Julia participated in various singing contests such as The Voice Kids. Spotted at the age of 15 by the French producer Laurent Boutonnat and Mylène Farmer, the young singer attributes her participation in Eurovision France 2022 to them.

Interview: Julia (Eurovision France 2022)

The formerly shy artist is now an assertive and happy young woman who wants to claim her taste for the great French musical standards like Vanessa Paradis or Charles Aznavour. She knows that representing France at Eurovision is a huge challenge, but she would be proud to have the opportunity:

“Absolutely, it would be the greatest honour for me to represent my country in such an important contest! It’s a real challenge for me, the challenge to assume the woman I am today and my vintage musical inspirations. But above all, it is a declaration of love to my country, France, by using in my single “Chut” the sounds of music created by illustrious artists of the French scene such as Vanessa Paradis or Serge Gainsbourg.”

Co-written with Alban Lico – who also wrote France’s Junior Eurovision 2021 entry “Tic Tac” – the song “Chut” is meant to be an anthem. Despite its easy lyrics, it is an anthem for the love relationships of our century. Julia points to the image of the woman, particularly the woman she is today:

“The story of ‘Chut’ is quite particular (laughs). We really wrote and composed this song in two days with my team. We wanted a music with airy lyrics while making it carry an important message. That of the love of today, a love sometimes misinterpreted, sometimes misrepresented and misunderstood. In ‘Chut’, I speak about me, of what I feel and of the assumed and assured woman I am, I know what I want and I am not an object. Like any man or woman, I am made of flesh and bones and I wish to be respected for what I am. This song, with its musicality inspired by great artists of French song, was meant to be light, striking and heady!”

As a woman of substance, Julia’s mantra is synonymous with determination:

“I think big and take small steps toward my big goals!”

Very inspired by the musical sounds of the 70s, Julia’s taste for vintage extends to her look. Her haircut is inspired by France Gall, a woman who inspires her in particular because of her victory at Eurovision in 1965:

“I am mainly inspired by of course France Gall in Eurovision who won this contest in 1965! She is a woman I admire in her songs, in her musical career and in her long musical relationship with Serge Gainsbourg, whose songs also inspired me to write the lyrics of ‘Chut’ with Alban Lico.”

In addition, Julia says the song has recently undergone some changes to sound more current and timeless. She thinks that some musical amendments will probably still be needed for the final of Eurovision France 2022:

“We changed the lyrics of the first verse for a more current text that will be more effective in the long run. We are proud, my team and I, of our song. Maybe some amendments will be made, but nothing that will change the DNA and the singularity of the single.”

What Julia wants most of all is that the public perceives a certain French glamour through her song and its catchy rhythm:

“I would say that people should remember this French glamour which is very present in ‘Chut’ and this notion of true love, difficult to find today. And of course, the heady musicality of the verses and choruses!”

The singer points the originality of her song against the flow of current musical trends. She hopes that this will make the difference among the 11 other songs:

“What makes my song stand out from the other 11 is this vintage side, a bit 70’s, which reinvents the myth of the free and independent French girl. Especially since today in 2022, the trend is more electro or rap, so it’s like a return to the roots of French music and a nod to the artists who made our musical heritage.”

For the grand final of Eurovision France 2022, Julia promises a dynamic and psychedelic atmosphere. Much like with herself, the artist wants to combine vintage and modernity in her staging:

“We want to create a 70’s atmosphere – dynamic and psychedelic! If I manage to win the final, I would like a vintage atmosphere while being modernised. Why not use dances or more current stage animations to mix the two eras.”

To conclude, Julia would like to send a message to all those who have fallen in love with her song:

“I hope you will like my single ‘Chut’, we will meet on 5 March on France 2! Vote for Chut!”

Of topic, Eurovision youtube channel is not releasing their top 10 most watched of February video. Do you think its because they don’t know what to do with Uno being the number 1 again?
