She has brought the Netherlands their first Dutch-language track since 2010. With “De Diepte”, S10 brings a love letter to herself. On Saturday, she performed that love letter live for the first time during a broadcast of Matthijs Gaat Door.

S10, who reminds many of Eurovision 2017 fourth-placer Blanche in terms of artistry, brought calmness and serene to the stage of the Dutch variety show.

Performing in front of television audience of around a million viewers, S10 sang her Eurovision 2022 song live for the first time since its premiere on Thursday in the Tuschinski Theatre

Dutch Eurovision commentator Cornald Maas told Matthijs Gaat Door host Matthijs van Nieuwkerk that the selection committee initially met S10 before she submitted a song after her label contacted the broadcaster. She eventually submitted several songs, including “De Diepte”, albeit still in demo version.

The selection committee unanimously chose for her entry as the Dutch Eurovision 2022 entry. Seeing her song contest track as a “love letter to herself”, S10 described the song as follows to Matthijs van Nieuwkerk:

“It’s about that my sadness is allowed to be there. I sing it actually as my “love”, there is a love in the music video too, but it’s actually about sadness that is allowed to be there. It’s about the Stien that was there several years ago, who was sad. But also about the Stien when I was six, when I performed plays in front of my whole family and my mum’s friends and danced on the music which we had at home. It’s actually a love letter to that.”

S10 has been open about issues she has been experiencing as a teen. Besides of being a singer, she has been vocal about young people who have been left on their own by care organisations. Reflecting on her past troubles while talking about her Eurovision entry, S10 said in Matthijs Gaat Door

“I was, in essence, from the age of 14 to 17, affected a lot by depressions and psychoses. It came on a day and also left on a day. But there has been a lot of unsafety, a lot of sadness… Now, it’s not the case anymore. If you know that type of sadness, then it’s very nice that it’s not there anymore.”

“I had to make very difficult choices for myself. And still everyday. For example, recently, having started to do Eurovision, I have landed in that choice of I want to be happy, I want to be safe, and I am allowed to chase my dreams. I’ve given myself a sort of permission for that. In the past months, I have written in a little notebook that I have permission to do this. I’m allowed to be there, because I’m already there. And that’s a nice thought to have.”

Amazing song. I literally listened to it on loop for 40 mins.
The intro is amazing. The chorus is amazing. The feeling is amazing. It’s heroic and uplifting. Great little bit of treasure I found tonight.

The song grows on me. But still have mixed feelings about the “oehoe, aha” chorus.

What a beautiful song, what a beautiful voice, I truly hope S10 does well. I have this feeling that she needs a big hug and that someone whispers to her that it all will be fine…. Very classy,….

Wow! Strong, beautiful performance. Song and artist are breathtaking. Final for sure. I’ll bet (and hope) top 10.

Now at Oddcheckers no. 7!

If they are going with this stage concept, I just hope we’ll get way more close ups to connect with her because the song is amazing and we need to connect and feel.

Yes, she has to stand alone on stage. With beautiful visuals.

NO dancers or band. That only distracts.

I don’t agree, I actually think you do need musicians on stage to make a rock-ish song like this seem more authentic. Even though they don’t really play anything, of course. You still want to create the illusion.

Wow, powerfull, beautiful performance! Very strong song and artist.
This is Final 100%. And I’ll bet in Final Top 10.

On Oddchecker.com Netherlands is now at 7.

I don’t necessarily think it’s a weak year because most songs are fine, everyone is just overreacting because their favorites didn’t win their national selections lol. With that being said though, this is definitely the only song that’s fully giving me winner potential. Amongst all the “ok” songs we have this year, this stands out as being actually amazing.

Very nice song. Good job Netherlands.
For me it’s the only entry alongside with Italy that is possible to listen to right now. The fact is frightening remembering that 90% (if not more ) of the songs is revealed. I have a feeling that this esc is going to be one of the worst recently in terms of music …

Please use similar concept for staging in Turin. This is going to do well with juries!

Well done Netherlands. A masterclass in songwriting and performance. This deserves a top 10 at the very least. There’s very little that needs doing to this. It’s almost good to go as it is. Once again the Dutch deliver.

when i listen to this song i get vibes of their 1969 entry de troubadour. I’m not saying it sounds the same it just the overall feel of the song. stripped back and folksy but very alternative contemporary in its feel. very good.

I don’t think so, Måneskin and Blind Channel showed us last year that two similar entries don’t necessarily cancel each other 🙂

But Finland and Italy were lucky that they were the only two heavy medal/hard rock entries period last year so they didn’t split for points as badly as the dozen or so bops that littered the grand final in 2021. I haven’t heard the leaked Greek demo and I want to wait until it’s officially released, but you say it’s a ballad? If Iceland and Portugal pick Ballads, then you end up with four female led ballads in semi final 1. Not all of them will make it. Out of of the 28 songs we have so far, I think… Read more »

Weirdly enough, after a weekend of heavy national final watching…I wake up on Monday morning and this is the one song (out of everything) that I’m really wanting to listen to.

Seeing her sing live gives me more confidence that my favourite entry so far can get amongst the top songs. They do need to work on some visual elements to help draw people in who haven’t heard the song before. A couple of dancers could add a lot to this as they could interpret the story of the singer and her lost love. I adore the fact that she sings this in Dutch but it means that they need to work a bit harder to get the meaning across.

The Netherlands has some excellent dance companies who I’m sure could find the right approach. I don’t want Stien to be under pressure to move and externalise the song. It’s enough that she stands and delivers. Of course there are other approaches to making the performance work visually.

No dancers please, because more is less. The actual staging is perfect as it is and conveys lots of emotion. The rock band in the background adds just enough drama to S10’s melancholic singing. I really, really hope they dont change anything to this as it’s a nice mix of Blanche and Duncan Laurence. Potential Top 3 (and fingers crossed it wins)

The only thing I dislike in “De Diepte” is… well, still, this lalala thing, which is unfortunaute and useless. BECAUSE everything else is really interesting, her live in Torino will obviously be good, this possible staging looks promising and, well, this song… Really enjoyable. And yes, Dutch can sound lovely!

It’s not useless – it’s just another way of expressing feelings, like a long sigh. We can’t always articulate how we feel in words. Plus, it will help bring in people who don’t speak a word of Dutch anyway.

But you feel the emotion from the song without understanding the words just like the Portugese song and when I first went to my new parents in law in Italië and I did not speak the language than. I could feel the emotion of the songs from riccardo coccus te or zucchero and they also made that within 5 months I spoke Italian fluently SO JUST SING ALONG IN DUTCH and learn also a new language,I’m teaching my granddaughter 5 now Italian , every day she chooses an object and asks what’s the name in Italian I say it and… Read more »

I am not trying to change your opinion or something, but I just wanted to say that the lalala part makes sense in the song. The lalala part sounds like an echo. The song is about the depth, as if you are stuck in a wishing well and you are desperate to get out of it. If you are stuck in a wishing well, words make an echoing sound.

The internal commission takes the best song out of all the submissions. Is the best song in English, it will be an English song. Is the best song in Dutch, it will be a Dutch song.

But I agree with you. Hopefully more Dutch quality artists feel now the confidence to give it a try in Dutch.

Barring really strong entries from the countries yet to select/reveal their songs (and Sweden and Georgia are the ones I’m most anticipating), this will end up in my top 5. Some of the weaknesses of the studio cut are improved upon in the live. For example, the ending with the vulnerability in her vocals works much better here than what I found lackluster recorded.

Also, whatever staging they go with, I hope it maintains the best parts of this one: the emotional connection with S10 and the effective simplicity.

In my top 5. I don’t understand the lyrics (still have to look for them) but I can feel the emotion and the sadness behind thee song. There’s a glimmer of hope in there too. The live performance makes it even better.

I don’t know if it will appreciated but it deserves the final and a top 15 finish for sure, if not top 10.

I’ve got ‘brividi’ while I watched this performance. Really really stunning, absolutely no doubt she will fight for another win for The Netherlands together with Sweden (ok, only if Cornelia wins) and Norway (far away from my style, but I’m not the only one who is voting)

1. Netherlands
2. Sweden (when Cornelia wins)
3. Italy
4. Norway
5. Spain

Netherlands deserve another win so they can show us a liveshow without COVID rules.

Ah… I fear it can be a Belgium 2017 or a Belgium 2018… A good song but the singer is not the best performer on the stage.
