Melodifestivalen 2022: Robin Bengtsson — “Innocent Love”

Robin Bengtsson, 31, is a household name in Sweden. After placing third on Idol in 2008, he went on to compete for the Swedish Eurovision ticket at Melodifestivalen 2016 with “Constellation Prize”, where he placed fifth.

The following year, he returned to Mello and emerged victorious, taking his winning track “I Can’t Go On” to Kyiv and placing fifth in the grand final at Eurovision 2017. Robin made it to the Melfest final for a third time in 2020 with his song “Take A Chance”.

Robin Bengtsson’s “Innocent Love” was penned by David Lindgren Zacharias, Victor Sjöström, Victor Crone, Viktor Broberg and Sebastian Atas.

Eurovision Fans will recognise Victor Crone as the man who braved the “Storm” for Estonia at Eurovision 2019. Meanwhile, David Lindgren Zacharias is known for co-writing Melfest 2021 fan favourite Clara Klingenström’s “Behöver inte dig idag.”

Victor Sjöström and Sebastien Atas are better known as Jubël, an up-and-coming pop duo from Halmstad, Sweden. They are best known for their cover of ’70s classic “Dancing In The Moonlight” which made waves in charts around the world in 2020 after being featured in British reality TV series Love Island. Viktor Broberg is a songwriter who frequently works with Jubël.

What do the “Innocent Love” lyrics mean?

Robin Bengtsson’s Melfest track is an ode to young love and budding romance. The uptempo ’80s-inspired pop-rock track sees Robin sing about the exciting first moments of a new relationship.

With lyrics like “we got the world in our hands now” and “nothing here can bring us down”, Robin makes his feelings clear — he’s high on the euphoria of love, and he’s taking it all in stride.

“Innocent Love” lyrics — Robin Bengtsson (Melfest 2022)

Songwriters: David Lindgren Zacharias, Victor Sjöström, Victor Crone, Viktor Broberg and Sebastian Atas

Want that innocent love
Want that innocent love

Woke up, I got a feelin’
Won’t stop, I still believe in innocent love
Want that innocent love

Get lost, you and me dreamin’
Tonight, we hit the ceiling
Innocent love
Want that innocent love

So, hold up, hold up
See the stars and the moonlight
Don’t let it pass us by
We got the world in our hands
Baby, shaking it off, like

Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
I just wanna stay in this moment
Take a little sip of the ocean
With you
We don’t have to complicate it
I just wanna stay in this moment
Take a littlе sip of the ocean
With you

I want that innocent lovе
I want that innocent love
We got the world in our hands
Baby, shaking it off, like

You are my kind of season
I am hooked on a feeling
Innocent love
Want that innocent love

So, hold up, hold up
See the stars and the moonlight
Don’t let it pass us by
We got the world in our hands
Baby, shaking it off, like

Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
I just wanna stay in this moment
Take a little sip of the ocean
With you
We don’t have to complicate it
I just wanna stay in this moment
Take a little sip of the ocean
With you

We got the world in our hands now
Nothing here can bring us down
Wanna learn how to live

Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
I just wanna stay in this moment
Take a little sip of the ocean
With you
We don’t have to complicate it
I just wanna stay in this moment
Take a little sip of the ocean (Sip of the ocean)
With you

Ooh, that innocent love
I want that innocent love
We got the world in our hands
Baby, shaking it off, like
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
I just wanna stay in this moment
Take a little sip of the ocean
With you

The song is nice and Robin is good but the two don’t match. The song needs to be performed someone who is “softer”, more gentle. Felix Sandman I could see doing this. Even Benjy Ingrosso would do good because they are more sensitive. Robin Bengtsson is more the “lad” type. Chill, relaxed, swag, confidence and all that.”Can’t go On” was a good example because only he could do it. This one not so much. Interesting enough, I had the opposite problem with “Dance you Off”. It was a “lad” song too, but Benjy was the wrong person for it. But… Read more »

I kinda forgot that he’s competing.
Next time(and we all know he will come back) he should bring something better and original.

What happens with your name? You like her or not anymore? You changed it twice, I guess. Just curious, no offence.

Agree. And Gagarina has ugly videos. We should have seen it coming.

due to miss gagarina’s stance on the russian invasion of ukraine, i’d rather just support my number one favorite of 2016 instead who happens to have a similar name 😀

This is actually a nice entry, but I feel like someone with a more bubbly stage personality would bring it to life even more. Robin feels kinda cool and slick, no? I mean, he does the best he can with it, and his choreo in enjoyable. I still feel a disconnect between him and the content. Perhaps in an opposite direction than in the case of Isaiah and Don’t Come Easy. Anyway, nice to see him again. Can’t Go On is a pretty slick entry with a great staging.

I think he would be a great choice. Also Felix Sandman and Tusse. Robin is great in his own right, of course, but I feel like he’d need to feel more relaxed and in a lack of better word ”bubbly” for this entry.

The “sip of the ocean” line makes me imagine Robin getting down on all fours and very gently sipping the water, or that this is what he imagines young people do. Just a fun mental image that honestly is the best part of this song and it isn’t even intended.

I like the song, but I genuinely have no idea what he means there. I don’t like saltwater.

I would say wine is a better choice than salty water on a first date, but I’m not judging!
