He was the very first act confirmed for Eurovision 2022, all the way back in September last year. But after six month’s of waiting, Belgium’s Jérémie Makiese has now revealed his song “Miss You”.
The big reveal took place over a number of platforms.
Jérémie was a guest on the VivaCité radio show Le 8/9, which gave the song it’s premiere play. Meanwhile, the music video for the entry was shown on TV channel La Une and very shortly after on the Eurovision YouTube channel.
Jérémie Makiese – “Miss You” (Belgium Eurovision 2022)
“Miss You” starts off as a bond-esque ballad with plenty of drama. It then transitions into an R&B offering with a soul undertone, particularly thanks to the addition of a gospel choir in the background of the final chorus.
The music video features Jérémie getting in a car with a built-in confessional booth. We also see him behind the microphone, in a car depot and dressed in white robes at church.
Who is Jérémie Makiese?
Jérémie Makiese came to fame through his participation in the 2020-2021 series of The Voice Belgique.
He auditioned with a performance of Labrinth’s “Jealous”, which prompted all four judges to turn. Jérémie was coached by the American-born singer BJ Scott. She had previously coached Loïc Nottet during his time on the show and co-wrote the lyrics to his Eurovision 2015 song “Rhythm Inside”.
Jérémie gave many impressive performances on the show and easily won over the voting public. He won the grand final in April 2021.
Jérémie was born in Antwerp to Congolese parents. He grew up in the Uccle municipality of Brussels and speaks both French and Dutch.
What do you think of Jérémie Makiese’s Eurovision 2022 song? How will Belgium do at the contest? Sound off in the comments below!
Winner! Winner! Winner! Winner!
The end.
Belgium 5,5/12
For me,Belgium rarely fails to deliver, and this year certainly is no exception! This guy’s vocals are everything! The video is amazing – I want that white and red jacket, hahaha! Pretty much like the UK, if he can deliver the same powerful singing on stage, I have no fear for him to go very, very high and even – why not – win!!! Un excellent choix pour la Belgique!
uffff another no no from me. I couldn’t even get to the end of the song. Nothing new here. Very few good songs this year, for me anyway. I stand by Ukraine, Poland, Estonia and France. nothing more.
..i take that back..The italian entry live is also very good.
Now that Belgium’s song has been revealed, after the French and then the Swiss entry, it’s official: there will be no song…in French at Eurovision. It’s a little sad, to be honest.
Urban flavor. Love it
This is quality and Jeremie has a particular and interesting blues-y voice but other than that it would highly depend on the approach they take on the staging. The song itself is a bit okish and just that, so it needs something clever to lift it up. I wouldn’t be worry about the vocal live performance though.
I do think it will qualify.
Overall a 6.75/10 for me.
Looking at all the comments I start to think Belgium should withdraw next year. People are never satisfied. When I hear people saying it will barely go through the semi final, I’m wondering if I listened to the same song. Not saying it’s a great song but in this very average year I think this is one of the 10 most interesting songs for the moment.
I hope Jeremie will prove a lot of people wrong in 2 months and that he will get a good score.
I think the comments are mostly positive? There’s a couple people who said this is a NQ but they’re isolated, and Belgium is doing well in the odds. Safe to say this song is well received 🙂
Belgium should go back to french or maybe another imaginary language.
Honestly, why is everyone blaming Belgium of not singing in French and therefore causing a Eurovision without French?! They sing for years in English now. Even in companies, they use English as a way of communicating between the Flemish, Walloon and dozen of other nationalities. It is a bigger language in Belgium then you might think, and as for as I know, the rules haven’t changed so no one is obliged to sing in their national language…
Very good singer, with an outstanding voice. The song itself doesn’t stand out as much, though. It is a song contest, after all. Best of luck to him, but it can’t be considered a very competitive entry.
This song brings me back to the early 2000s RnB era. Well done Jérémie, a RnB song to Eurovision 😀
We’re not gonna miss him after his non-qualification though…!
This is strong, catchy and the performer has great voice. Its my favorite of the todays released song.
Despite the mostly positive reception to this song among the fans, I just can’t help but feel disappointed by the song to be honest. I was kinda expecting something amazing that would be both a definite qualifier and a song that could challenge for victory but I didn’t get either of those.
Belgium best overall eurovision country as always
I expected this from him (I mean this in a very good way), as the song’s cool and slick but I feel like it left a lot to be desired, especially after the chorus. Nevertheless, I have no doubt he’ll do great at the contest! 🙂
The vocals – wow!! I’m gonna keep listening to this as I’ve not completely warmed to it yet, but I like it!
It’s a good song, I like it. But I can’t help feeling that with his wonderful voice, they could have given him a much stronger song. It’s kind of a miss opportunity.
Should easily reach the final considering all the much weaker entries in SF2.
This year should be canceled, because awarding a trophy to any of these songs we’ve heard so far would be a crime. Literally 4-5 of them would manage to qualify in previous years. What’s happening this year??
The standard of the songs so far is very poor indeed, this Belgian song almost sound like it’s being played at the wrong (slow) speed and has had all the energy sucked out of it.
Croatia 2019 would have been top 5 this year.
I love this song !
Will do great with the jury, I’m a little bit more concerned with the televote. But one of my favorite, this voice !!!
I was expecting a ballad, but this feels slightly more hard hitting than that. The vocals are top notch. If the staging is well done then this could do very well with the juries. I just can’t see televote matching jury at the moment. Solid entry and it does feel like a more unique entry than lots of the songs we’ve heard this year that will compete with each other for the similar taste in music.
What a beautiful voice, so gorgeous omg! I think this song starts off strong but I do not like the chorus and by half way through, it starts to grate on me. I like a bit of RnB but I’m sorry to say I didn’t enjoy this song. This is a critique of the song itself and not the singer.
Good song but it kinda leads nowhere..
A quality ballad from Belgium and a great voice. I think it will reach the final.
Good singer, the song is ok but not winning material but hey, there is no winning song this year. What a bad songs we have this year no one wants to win this year…
I think the UK song is the best by far this year.
One of the better ballads this year.. and Jeremie has SERIOUS PIPES!! Wowsers! I like the RnB vibe and it’s quite chilled. Begium is in the same semi final as Australia. He also shares his semi final with the Monetenegrin and North Macedonian slower songs.. A real battle of the ballads! I like this. 7.5 out of 10 for me.
I love this man
Looking at the big picture, the ones in the winning spot at the moment, for me are: Italy, The Netherlands, Ukraine, and France. But I don’t think people will heavily vote for the two first because of recent wins, so… Will it be Ukraine or France..?
For the music, I actually scored France quite low this year (shock), so I would honestly pick Ukraine out of those two.
Depending on how snobby the juries will be the only clear winner I reckon is Norway. Strongest song by a mile.
Not feeling the chorus…
Belgium continues serving quality. It feels like a blend of their usual jazzy Bond-ish vibe and a very American R&B American of music. There are melodic shifts, ups and downs, and Jeremie’s voice is amazing. Juries will definitely love this.
PS. At the beginning we got a few underwhelming entries, but as this year continues piling songs, I see that most of them are at least solid. A bit early to know for sure, but this year could be similarly good as 2021.
I literally wrote down “bass line melodic shifts;” that’s incredible.
Sadly we are not of the same opinion about 2022 songs as a whole. I think this might be the weakest year for songs in around 10 years.
For some reason, many people are saying that, but I honestly don’t feel any downfall from the previous years. I mean, since 2012 no year has been bad for me, but I already see more amazing entries than in 2013 and 2020, at least (2017 also might be on a similar level, which still means good). I can name at least 5-6 entries as good as the top ten were in 2021, and only about 5-6 weak ones (under 5/10). But that’s just me. I’m guessing there will be a lot to talk about in April. 🙂
Yes, there should be, if we’re not all at war by then. I fear the future right now, I really do.
I fear for the future as well, and I’m checking out the news around 10 times a day. I feel the same gloomy vibe (Perhaps that’s a part of why so many people are not even feeling music the same anymore? (Not sure, though, it might just be the taste) ) in the air, and sometimes I can’t sleep. Objectively, I think that *the worst global outcome* won’t happen, as the European and American leaders won’t go to a direct conflict. I pray to God that I’m right. But at the same time, I cannot stop thinking about Ukraine, and… Read more »
Same here. Thank you, many times over.
No problem. I think that most of us are experiencing a lot of turmoil right now. I think that talking about it can help. Every day I hope that this crisis ends in a way that it de-escalates.
The first 50secs are so incredibly promising and then comes a chorus that is very underwhelming and somehow feels that you ‘ve heard it before.
Still, Jérémie has a grabbing voice and a smart staging could do miracles
i had zero expectations from this song and i was extremely positively surprised. the song is nothing special but it fills the r&b/soul gap this year.
I love Jérémie’s voice, so that’s a good start. The song is a bit “R&B for beginners” though. It’s not as iconic as some of the Belgium entries of previous years. But that’s the general feeling I get from 2022 anyhow, so it might not matter. I see the video went for US music video authenticity; nice to see Belgium going with an international appeal here. But I miss those iconic Belgium moments of the last few years. Am I in the “wrong place” on this one, or does “Miss You” require some more “city lights” to illuminate the “rhythm… Read more »
Pretty bland. His voice is much better than the song itself.
Really like it, strong entry! Well done Belgium!
Wow, this is what I call a great song!! And what a beautiful strong voice. Well done Belgium! Félicitations Jérémy! 12 points!
I will not miss it in the final….. A big NO.
So you prefer 20 other songs from the Semi Finals? I guess it’s just ‘A Matter of.. Taste’ 😉
Of course this is going to be in final! How skewed can you be?
to bad for you it will by in the final
Not bad but very forgettable, clearly.
I really like it. Good job Belgium
Finally some good and and healthy competition to Brividi! Well done Belgium, you are back in the game! Top 5 for sure!
Yeah, it’s okay. A bit of gospel, a bit of r&b… the problem is that it’s also a bit forgettable. It’s not easy to write a really engaging chorus, but this just doesn’t do it for me.
This is good and I like it, but I think he could fail to qualify if the staging won’t be strong because this could be easily overlooked in such competitive semi-final.
Eh, it’s ok.
It’s ok indeed.
I really like this, actually. Very radio friendly, amazing voice, and a good staging will elevate it to the top 10, imo.
I actually think it is really good. I do.
Very good and classy rn’b song, totally Sisqó vibes with this one, and the look of Jeremie helps for that too, I like it, we don’t have this kind of music this year in the contest, that’s cool, good luck Belgium!
I feel like I’m in the minority here because I actually really prefer the transition after the first 30 seconds. The beat is funky. But also maybe I would’ve liked something different to happen the last 30 seconds… It’s still a good effort and brings diversity to the table. The year isn’t so bad after all
Decent – good voice – the thing is if UK sent this it would probably be overlooked!
And if Sweden would send this, it would be a sure qualifier 😉 Too bad people link songs always to countries, and if the country has a good track record, it automatically makes the song better…
Indeed, if Sweden would have sent it, it would be a fan favorite for weeks already! But Belgium : oh well… it’s ok !
Well at least it’s not as flat as Switzerland, I am sure he will elevate it live
Meh. Okay song. A bit dated. Problem is the singer his thin voice. Don’t like it.
It’s like a James Bond theme song.
I like it though it’s very well produced and has a classy edge to it.
It’s one of those songs that could be a dark horse and stomp it’s way up to the scoreboard to about 6-10th orrrr it could NQ.
Staging will be the clear make or break here and I definitely expect it to do very well.
Good job Belgium
