Almost two months after winning Spain’s new national final, Chanel delivered yet another sizzling live performance of her Eurovision 2022 entry. The “SloMo” singer gave a show-stopping performance of her song for Turin at the iconic Drag Queen Gala of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Drag Queen Gala takes place in Las Palmas on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria. The event has been running since 1998 and is part of Los Palmas carnival festivities. It’s a major date on Spain’s LGBT calendar, showcasing the best in drag.
After a break in 2021 due to the pandemic, the contest returned this year with the theme “la tierra” (or “the earth”). The contest was won by Drag Vulcano (Isidro Javier Pérez Mateo) who delivered the fantasy “Por fin, cariño” (or “At last, darling”).
Chanel slays on the Drag Queen Gala stage
But many Eurovision fans were mainly interested in one performance. Spain’s Eurovision 2022 diva Chanel took to the stage as the interval act and performed her Eurovision entry “SloMo”.
Chanel largely kept to the same choreography that won over the Benidorm Fest juries, but for her Drag Queen Gala performance she wore a black bodysuit highlighted with gold and purple sequins, with a matching jacket.
The Benidorm Fest winner proved that she’s a skilled performer, serving both vocals and making the complicated dance moves look effortless.
Chanel releases music video for “SloMo”
As part of her journey to Turin, Chanel has also released the music video for “SloMo”. The video is largely based on the national final performance and doesn’t add many embellishments. But the “less is more” philosophy suggests Chanel is letting the song sell itself and saving the big performance surprises for Turin.
Spanish broadcaster RTVE also confirmed that Chanel will be joined on stage in Turin by five dancers: Exo Narcos, Josh Huerta, Pol Soto, Raquel Caurín and Ría Pérez. This suggests Chanel’s backing vocals will be pre-recorded, letting the choreography stand out on the Eurovision stage.
The performance will be created by the American choreographer Kyle Hanagami. The in-demand choreographer has previously worked with acts such as Black Pink, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, CNCO, Justin Bieber, and NSYNC.
Kyle Hanagami is excited to work with Chanel and the Spanish team, saying of the “SloMo” singer “I think I have never worked with a new artist who has such a magnitude of talent. She has so much talent from the beginning.”
What do you think? Should Chanel keep similar choreography to the national final? Or should she change it up for Eurovision? Tell us your thoughts below!
Such a great dancer!
I might be wrong but I been watching some of her performances and they are indeed very professional. However I have a suspicion that she is lyp syncing a large part of the song using plus backing vocal. You cant tell any difference from one performance to the other. If it would be live it would be small diffrences . I really think one should not allow prerecorded backning vocals. Last year Albina was the worst one in this aspect. It is worst when they use their own voice that have been auto tuned in the studio. Sometimes very hard… Read more »
She runs everyday while singing slomo since last december ! This is a vocal performance
Chanel deserve to win this year, everytime more sure about this,:)
I have not seen anyone writing hateful comments towards this diva or Spain. Quite the opposite. Neither here nor on YouTube. It is as far as I can tell a rumor or fake news to create some kind of drama. Some like me might not love it – but not loving something is not the same as hate. Good luck Spain.
There are a lot of people that defend this tooth and nail, why? It isn’t bad, but it isn’t mindblowingly awsome either (subjective, as always with things such as these). It is serviceable, looks nice and sounds ok. She can sing, but it isn’t powerful, which in itself is a problem (yeah she dances and all, but it isn’t that she is out of breath in her singing, but more that her voice doesn’t fill the room). Backing tracks are of course nowdays allowed at eurovision which will help her, but don’t pretend that this is the best thing since… Read more »
Have I said any other song this year is mindblowingly awsome? What I meant there was that a lot of the fans act as if this song is just that. I didn’t ask why it was liked, I can see why. I asked why so fiercly protective, aggressively protective even. Of course I understand liking a song, but when the fans become overprotective to even just slight concerns or comments that point out a flaw it becomes toxic af. I wish people could take a step back sometimes and not murder eachother over slight differences in taste or opinion. You… Read more »
Let them/us be… Who is murdering who? You just come here to say you dont understand why people might like this song because whatever and whatever more.
Well i like this song because I like it… Overprotective? Not really. I am just telling you I like the song and her performance.. I remind you that the one asking why some people defend this song was you…
So now you are saying that I’m saying something I’m not really saying. Classy. And if you aren’t one of the people who can’t handle the concerns about the song and Chanels singing then my question was obviously not meant for you. I remind you that I asked why people were protecting it so intensively against valid critisism. Liking something shouldn’t make you blind to it’s flaws. Blindly protecting something makes you nothing more than a husk, you have to be able to handle critisism. You can for sure discard critisism that is baseless, but discarding all critisism only makes… Read more »
There are a lot of people who defend this tooth and nail, WHY? (You dixit).
What exactly is that i am saying you are saying that you are not really saying?
This: “You just come here to say you dont understand why people might like this song because whatever and whatever more” I never stated I don’t understand why people like the song. The opposite actually. All I wonder about is why people are protecting it to such a degree that others can’t question anything about it without being downvoted, attacked in the comments etc. The answer of “I like it” isn’t a good enough answer for me to be okay with people turning a blind eye, discarding or attacking critisism. Liking something and fiercly protecting it are not the same… Read more »
If she just stood at the microphone, wearing more clothes and sang this song I believe it would be ranked in the bottom end ,however she is a brilliant dancer with a very professional and slick performance and on the night that is all the casual viewer will notice.Whether juries will appreciate her understandably breathy vocals considering the effort the dance routine takes is unknown, but they did partly forgive Luca Hanni for less than perfection in 2019
Wearing more clothes?? Sexist post of the day?
I really don’t know why this seem to be such a favorite among many fans because it is such a simple, cheesy and unoriginal song. I have heard this song a million times at eurovision and also seen the performance a million times. Is it because it’s from Spain.? But that really doesn’t take away what’s lacking with it. Will this do well with the juries? I I have a feeling it will not.
I think it is because she is indeed extremly sassy and beautiful. Imagine a lesser beauty doing the same song. It also seems like it is playback so so don’t know how she can sing it live. The song in itself is cheezy – but I guess a kind of fun. A little bit like Serbia last year.
You didn’t write those kind of comments about Luca Hani… ??. And yes, we know how she sings, we already heard her in Benidorm, then in Portugal and yesterday in Canary islands.
Yes I am not the greatest fan of these kind of entries based on good dancing and good looking performers without any meaning and that are relying heavily on backing vocals. I like it only if the song in itself is really smashing. None of these two are that. The songs are very basic. But Chanel is a great dancer. For me it is like a very well produced middle act.
Unoriginal?… Like your dirty ears
The YouTube video says “Slow Mov” when the song starts lol
I like how they’re keeping the choreography and the dancers for each performance, including Torino’s. But I’m worried she’s relying too much on playback, especially toward the latter half of the song, which is a problem since her vocals are already a bit shaky from the demanding choreography. But Spain seems to know what they’re doing this year, for a change! XD
Such a great dancer, gorgeous woman, performance is really wow, but the vocals are suffering for understandable reasons. Voice is really shaky.
Voice is shaky??? When??
She has an incredible voice that does not need to dance or wear nice clothes, if so, she would not have broken into the Spanish music list at number 30, I assure you ?
She is a good singer and a good dancer. But the song is not very original. Similar to many Reggaeton songs. I am not sure it can become a hit.
what’s wrong with reggaeton songs? finally Spain is sending something current that sounds like chart hits.
of course and all the other songs are not original at all because they look like pop or they look like rock or they look like other ballads etc ?
I wish so had anything good to say about this – except that she is looking good and seams to be a good dancer. The rest is very cheesy.
Great live show. Vocals need work but I have every faith that this will be improved by the final. The song is still in my top 3. It’s selling point, this is a package and I love it. Way to go Spain.
I have a feeling the jury will ruin her chances
Let’s hope that’s not the case
I don’t think so, they did vote for Switzerland in 2019 and Cyprus in 2018 (both top 10, Cyprus top 5)
Girl is stunning and her performance is already Eurovision herstory.
This is not ‘serving vocals’. Listen again. This is totally off multiple times.
This is unfortunately true
so what? it’s a just a promo performance on an outdoors show. I praise her for singing live unlike others..
This really is the complete package performance. This performance on the finals night will give this song chart success around the globe.
It is kinda low energy comparing to the previous performances. But still good. Definite top 3 in a year of ballads
At this point, there are other fans and odds favs who will probably score higher, we know how it all works. Most surely, not a top 3. Nevertheless, I think she really deserves a top 5.
Well in Spain a top 3, a top 5 or a Top 10 will feel like a victory, believe me.
Trust me, at this point we would call “victory” to anything higher than the 20th place.
