Of all the countries at Eurovision, Austria is perhaps a leader in obtaining mixed results. Over the last decade, the Central European nation has claimed a victory, a bronze medal and a nul points. Coming to Turin on a two-time non-qualification streak, a teenage duo is looking to turn Austria’s fortunes around. Enter LUM!X and Pia Maria with “Halo”.

Austria in Eurovision 2022: LUM!X feat. Pia Maria “Halo”

Luca Michlmayr, better known as LUM!X, is only 19 years old but has a lot of musical success already to his name. The Italian-Austrian DJ is best known for his collaborations with Eiffel 65 member Gabry Ponte. In 2019, they released “Monster”, which was certified Platinum in Austria, Germany, France and Poland. His early success earned him an award for Meilleure révélation (Best revelation) at the French Fun Radio DJ Awards. Last year, they worked with Italian dance musicians Prezioso to release “Thunder”, which was certified Platinum in Italy. An electronic musician with connections to the host nation and with big home support – he has a lot to prove in Turin!

Pia Maria is even younger than LUM!X, at a raw age of 18, but has youthful energy to match. In addition to being a songwriter herself, she has a lot of musical theatre experience and spent three years training in special effects make-up. She currently works at the Tyrolean State Theatre in Innsbruck.

Their Eurovision 2022 entry “Halo” was written by LUM!X, Gabry Ponte, Anders Nilsen, Rasmus Flyckt and Sophie Simmons – an international team stacked with musical talent and experience. In addition to the success LUM!X and Gabry Ponte have had together, Anders Nilsen is a Norwegian artist known for his hit “Salsa Tequila”. Rasmus Flyckt is a Swedish electronic artist with millions of views on Spotify. Sophie Simmons is the daughter of Kiss bassist Gene Simmons and an experienced musician herself.

What do the “Halo” lyrics mean?

The song opens with the central theme of finding inner strength and collaboration: “Let me be your halo, cause we’ve been through hell and back in only one night”. The lyrics refer to Ancient Greek figures Hercules and Socrates to establish an image of inner strength, “We don’t need a Hercules to bring a man to his knees, philosophers like Socrates said find yourself, think on your feet”. Then the next verse flows through the theme of rising to challenges, “We can be the CEOs, yeah you already know, we’re not under control and no, no, not anymore”.

These themes continue throughout the song, with strong vibrant imagery of angels, “I’m stronger than angels, I’m fearless in danger, and I will bring dark to the light”, and stars, “we’re gonna be written among the stars, posing so we’re hustling young queens”.

Next to an intense electronic dance beat, these lyrics conjure up feelings of power that will likely be well received by an audience desperate to party after two years of lockdowns. With a young musical duo at the helm, and Eurovision becoming more popular with young people, Austria could be one to watch this year. Let’s dance!

“Halo” lyrics – LUM!X feat. Pia Maria (Austria Eurovision 2022)

Written and composed by: LUM!X, Anders Nilsen, Gabry Ponte, Rasmus Flyckt, Sophie Simmons

Let me be your halo
Cause we’ve been through hell and back in only one night
Let me be your halo
Cause heaven can’t wait for us to finish the fight

We don’t need a Hercules to bring a man down to his knees
No more apologies
Philosophers like Socrates said find yourself, think on your feet
Go sharpen your teeth

We can be CEOs
Yeah, you already know
Yeah, we can be the boss
Fly higher than the Gods
We’re not under control
And no, no, not anymore
If you feel me, then put your hands up

Let me be your halo
Cause we’ve been through hell and back in only one night
Let me be your halo
Cause heaven can’t wait for us to finish the fight

And I’m stronger than angels
I’m fearless in danger
And I will bring dark to the light
Let me be your halo
Cause we’ve been through hell and back in only one night

I think I had the right idea
Beautiful, something to feel
For a hundred years
We’re gonna be written among the stars
Posing so we’re hustling young queens

We can be CEOs
Yeah, you already know
Yeah, we can be the boss
Fly higher than the Gods
We’re not under control
And no, no, not anymore
If you feel me, then put your hands up

Let me be your halo
Cause we’ve been through hell and back in only one night
Let me be your halo
Cause heaven can’t wait for us to finish the fight

And I’m stronger than angels
I’m fearless in danger
And I will bring dark to the light
Let me be your halo
Cause we’ve been through hell and back in only one night

La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
Don’t need no
La la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Let me be your halo
Cause we’ve been through hell and back in only one night
Let me be your halo
Cause heaven can’t wait for us to finish the fight

And I’m stronger than angels
I’m fearless in danger
And I will bring dark to the light
Let me be your halo
Cause we’ve been through hell and back in only one night

I’ll be honest: There has been some over-thinking put into some of these lyrics. The meanings are so reverse-symbolic in places that that the song risks meaning very little. But, the good news is that the music is a lot of up-tempo fun, which 2022 really needs.

The Performance was live with Playback (second voices) it is a EDM Song.
I think the Background was to loud and overtuned.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from watching ESC for almost 10 years is that whenever we think “It’s bad but they have lots of time, they will change/improve/twix it or it’s going to be different live”, it NEVER turns out well.

exactly, literally the only example I can think of is Cyprus 2018, where we didn’t even have a live version to go off of, just the song and music video. and we have seen similar songs as this one tanking in the actual contest

That doesn’t make any sense.

I don’t care that Pia wasn’t singing live. I was not there, and this is not part of the contest.

It’s a song I don’t really have a strong opinion on one way or the other. Perfectly fine, good energy, but not one I can say is at the front of my mind at any given time.

The lyrics are a bit off: it should be “Medusa had the right idea, beautiful’s something to fear…we’re gonna be reaching among the stars, bullseyes are all for young queens.” And: “and I’m stronger than angels, don’t feel it’s a danger, and now we’ll bring black to the light.” This song is amazing!

Unlike Norway, which is STILL being falsely accused for using playback, we STILL haven’t heard Pia singing this entry live. And it’s STILL getting extreme hype without even a glimpse of evidence whether she’s going to nail this or run out of breath mid-singing and allow the back vocals to do her job. Y’all Subwoolfer haters better check your facts, lol. The amount of lies about them using playback once again yesterday was utterly obnoxious. Either compare their Hard Rock Hotel performance with their NF one or just go get your ears checked…

Yeah, Subwoolfer use pre recorded chorus in certain parts, no way in the whole song. But Austria yesterday was straight playback.

EXACTLY! The only parts where playback exists in their performance is in the introductive sort of “howling” and in the “yum yum” chorus!

And the yum yum and banano parts were not playback for the first time in their London performance which I found to be their best vocal performance yet!
If Halo flops then meh unlucky I guess.

Did they really use playback in London? She wasn’t singing at all? I think this is an absolute banger, I love their energy and outfits in the video clip and I really hope they will do well.
