After winning Germany 12 Points, Malik Harris will represent his country in Turin at the Eurovision Song Contest this year with his song “Rockstars”. The German-American pop singer, rapper and songwriter will be heading straight to the final as Germany is of course one of the Big 5 automatic qualifiers.

Germany in Eurovision 2022: Malik Harris “Rockstars”
Malik Harris is the son of Ricky Harris, an American television presenter and actor from Detroit who is now based in Germany. Malik began getting into music at the age of 13, when he would play cover versions of songs on his guitar. He’s since released a flurry of singles and his debut album, Anonymous Colonist, dropped in 2021.
In early 2022, Malik was announced as one of the acts competing in Germany’s new national final, Germany 12 Points. Finishing first in the televote and second in the radio vote, Malik emerged victorious and was chosen as the country’s representative for Eurovision 2022.
What do the “Rockstars” lyrics mean?
Ahead of Germany 12 Points, Malik sat down for an interview with wiwibloggs and spoke about the meaning behind his song “Rockstars”:
“It’s a song that has incredible personal significance for me and offers a glimmer of hope in these difficult times, while also showing people that we’re all in the same boat.”
One may not believe that the actor Steve Carell had something to do with the creation of Malik’s track but the 40 Year Old Virgin star planted the seeds for the man from Landsberg am Lech to write his Eurovision song:
“After watching the US hit series The Office, there was a scene in which a character on the show utters the line ‘I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them’.
“The minute I saw that, I burst out crying – it really hit me. I realised how much time I spent in the past and wanting to get the feeling of being a child back.
“The light-heartedness, when being happy was really easy. I realised how much I missed that. That’s when I immediately started writing the song about that feeling and realisation that the good old days are over.”
But despite the melancholic nature of the song, it’s not all doom and gloom for Malik:
“But, that being said, what I try to do in my songs is try to convert a positive thing in the song. And this one is to live a life now and not just to focus on the good old days. The good old days don’t end, we just look for them in the past instead of right now.
No matter how dark the days get now, try to find the good things in your life now and then the ‘good old days’ never really end.”

I can’t stand it.
I don’t get the Germany hate this year. Sure, the song sounds a bit dated, but it has heart, it is meaningful to the singer, he sings it with passion. And it’s actually quite catchy. Might even be left side of the scoreboard for me.

I actually like this. There is something authentic and honest about Malik, especially the rap part. You believe him when he sings. I don’t think it will do as bad as people say

Would like to see Germany take a bit more risk, instead of selecting a middle-of-the-road type of talent show act.
i don’t think it’ll tank as hard as many expect. i think it’ll escape the bottom 5 entirely. i’m not a fan of it myself and i think it could’ve been executed better, but the song has nostalgic lyrics and vibes that many casual viewers will relate to.
Would not be qualifying if it had to compete in a semi-final. Another bottom 5 finish looms.
