He’s the most-streamed British singer on TikTok with more than 12 million followers and he’s been busying promoting his Eurovision 2022 song “SPACE MAN” around Europe.

And on Tuesday Sam Ryder continued with the promo, this time on home territory on Good Morning Britain

The Essex-based singer fielded some compliments from host Richard Madeley, who told viewers Sam’s Eurovision song is “really worth downloading and having a listen to.” He added that the song has “some really good chord changes in the verses.”

Sam explained that he took a bit of inspiration from Billy Joel, and that he wrote the song on a boiling hot day in a studio with no windows.

“This song seemingly came out of thin air in ten minutes,” he said.

“For me, a song like that — the best thing you can do — if there’s an idea floating around the room is don’t get in the way of it. You feel that you don’t really write the song, it just sort of happens and you’re there to take the credit afterwards.”

So what’s the song about, Sam?

“For me it’s about appreciating and realising the things you have in your life that are already absolute treasures that you love. We spend so much of our life going so far away from that in search of a life we think we want only to get there and then look back and go, ‘Jesus, it was there all along.'”

Host Ranvir Singh asked what he would have been doing four years ago — before the pandemic when he became a TikTok star.

“I would have been on my Dad driving him absolutely nuts on a construction site…digging up concrete.”

“I was doing that and singing wherever I could — pubs, clubs. No one would ever be there but it was always such amazing fun.”

“Singing has always brought me joy no matter what — playing to no one or, thankfully now, people are coming to the shows. It’s amazing to experience that side of it as well. At the beginning of lockdown I sang Britney Spears’ ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ in my mum’s kitchen and it’s snowballed from there.”

He remembers vividly the first celebrity endorsement he received online.

“I was making pasta one evening and I was trying to sing Whitney Houston ‘I’m Every Woman’ — the Chaka Khan cover — and I was losing my patience because it’s hard to sing. It was boiling hot. I thought I’m going to have a break and make some pasta.”

“And all of a sudden I got a notification from Sia saying, ‘Hey, Justin Bieber just texted me a video of you singing my song.’ She was so generous with her kindness — so encouraging.”

Richard interrupted him to bring up the fact he thinks Ukraine will win it all and that the competition is basically a run for second place.

“They are fantastic,” Sam says, clearly not bothered if Ukraine do in fact win. “I met those guys in Amsterdam yesterday. They’re so fun. They’re just stoked to be there representing their country at such an important time.”

As for their song: “I love it. It gives me beastie Boys vibes. I think it’s cool.”

Are you loving Sam’s positive vibes? What do you think of his chances? Let us know down below…

I just hope he does well enough to shut all the Brits up who insist Europe hates them and the contest is too political for them. Really sick of this narrative.

That Britney Spears cover reminds me so much of Darius Danesh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaXGUhCi29g

If Space Man was in MGP semi-final and failed to qualify no one would say a word, and yet here some talk about it winning Eurovision…

It would fail to qualify in a NF that brought to ESC stuff like the banana song, TIX and Rybak’s kindergarten entry, all in the last 5 years? Behave…

Don’t understand all previous rave reviews. What I see is a so-so make over of the Elton John classic Rocket Man.

On the latest Eurotrip podcast they have an interview with Lee Smithurst who says the staging will be based on Sam’s ideas. The set is currently on a P & O ferry to the continent and will then go by truck to Italy. So sounds like something big. Sam sounded like he was going to say something about staging plans in the GMB interview but they interrupted him.

I have to say, no matter what happens, I’d rather the UK go big or go home at Eurovision. The idea of the staging being a big to-do excites me.

Sorry for being off-topic, but why was “Brividi” official video taken down from Mahmood’s channel with a copyright strike?

HE IS AMAZING. what a great personality.
Cmon guys, let’s make the song a hit in UK!!!

But oh god, another TV show highlighting the nul points and the ‘losing strike’ of the UK… cmon now… this is so ridiculous. I hope Sam’s success in Turin will change the attitude, as long as Tap music is involved, I’;m hopeful!!!

I think UK will be in the top 5 this year and the top 3 is really depending on the staging and the competitors.

What a sweetheart Sam is—his positivity is charming, especially in these times when it’s so easy to be cynical and world-weary.

I hope Sam does well in Torino on 14 May. Great that he’s been able to do so much press and pre-show events.

He is such a good ambassador for the UK! I also hope he does well, really think it deserves a top ten placement.
