From winning the jury vote in 2019, to a non-qualification in 2021, North Macedonia have seen both highs and lows over recent editions of Eurovision. Hoping to pull them up to another high in 2022 is Andrea, who will be singing “Circles”.

North Macedonia in Eurovision 2022: Andrea “Circles”

Andrea Koevska was born in Skopje, North Macedonia. After posting videos of herself singing covers on social media, Andrea was spotted by producer Aleksandar Masevski. The pair began collaborating and have released a series of singles since 2020. Aleksandar also composed Andrea’s Eurovision entry “Circles”.

For Eurovision 2022, North Macedonia returned to a national final for the first time since 2015, staging Za Evrosong. After the votes of the international jury and televote were combined, there was a tie for first place between Andrea and competitor Viktor Apostolovski. The preference of the jury was used as the tie break, and since Andrea had topped the jury vote, she was declared as the winner.

What do the “Circles” lyrics mean?

Andrea opens the song by wanting to start a dialogue with her partner. She can feel the relationship breaking down and hopes they can discuss things together: “I just want a healthy conversation / Get it right and fix this situation”.

However, as the first verse moves on, she begins to question “Can we even fix this situation?”. Andrea and her partner seem to be stuck in a loop, where they try to sort things out but always end up back where they started – hence, the central theme of the lyrics “We run around, run around in circles”.

The frustration of not getting anywhere bubbles to the surface during the chorus. Despite her repeated attempts to work things out with her lover, Andrea despairs at their lack of commitment to the situation: “I gave you all, but you’re not listenin'”. In the end, Andrea decides it’s time to call things off and escape from the cycle they’ve been trapped in: “Can you stop calling me baby / I’ve made up my mind already”.

Speaking about the message of the song during an interview with wiwibloggs at London Eurovision Party, Andrea commented:

“[The emotions] are coming from deep within. Because, you know, I don’t like to expose that part of myself very often because it’s personal, you know. But I do like to share it when it’s time for people to feel less alone. So I think I captured that very good with the song because we’re all going through something, in a situation we don’t like and we can’t necessarily change it right away — it’s hard work and a process — but when we do, we feel better, we feel freer, and just happier in general.”

“Circles” lyrics – Andrea (North Macedonia Eurovision 2022)

Music: Aleksandar Masevski; Lyrics: Aleksandar Masevski, Andrea

I just want a healthy conversation
Get it right and fix this situation
Everything is crumbling down beneath us
We run around, run around in circles
Tell me, is this our last temptation?
Can we even fix this situation?
Do I listen to my heart or mind, ’cause
We run around, run around in circles
Circles, circles
Oh, circles

You don’t wanna test my limits
But something tells me you’re not listenin’
Probably, you’re going crazy
It’s all you’ve been doing lately
You don’t wanna test my limits
I gave you all, but you’re not listenin’
Can you stop calling me baby
I’ve made up my mind already
We’re running in circles

I just want a hеalthy conversation
Get it right and fix this situation
Everything is crumbling down bеneath us
We run around, run around in circles
We run around in circles
Ooh, yeah

You don’t wanna test my limits
But something tells me you’re not listenin’
Probably, you’re going crazy
It’s all you’ve been doing lately
You don’t wanna test my limits
I gave you all, but you’re not listenin’
Can you stop calling me baby
I’ve made up my mind already, yeah-eah

We’re running
Oh…

I’ve made up my mind
I’ve made up my mind
(Stop) Stop calling me baby
(Probably, you’re going crazy)
Crazy

You don’t wanna test my limits
I gave you all, but you’re not listenin’
Can you stop calling me baby
I’ve made up my mind already
We’re running in circles

Completely unrelated to the lyrics, but how extremely likable is Andrea in interviews and on stage as well?! What a potent energy! Wish she had a rap song, I think it would fit her! I absolutely love her deep voice timbre, especially on lower notes. And she is gorgeous too! Definitely one of my first candidates for Eurovision’s Next Top Mode this year. I didn’t have time to look up anything about her but she is also giving me some strong queer vibes…. Unfourtunately the list of what I like about this entry seems to end here. Musically it doesn’t… Read more »

The most underrated song of the year and one of my favorites. I hope she isn’t robbed!

It’s not bad. But it’s not good either. It’s ok. Is it enough to qualify? I don’t think so. But it’s not beyond saving in case they brought amazing staging or something.

This is a great piece of “musical dialogue” that feels authentic and is curiously underrated by the fans and the bookies. In other words: It’s better than most seem to think it is.

Indeed it is, it’s even got hate for no reason which is baffling

Why is everybody assuming that the guy is to blame for this toxic relationship? Maybe she messed it up? These lyrics ooze so much hostility that this version seems so
much more probable. If someone calls THIS a „healthy conversation“ then I‘d heavily suggest to seek professional advice.

The lyrics are quite realistic, and Andrea channel this frustration rather well. The whole song feels repetitive and tired, but I guess it fits the narrative?

PS. I am now also wondering about the Wiwi Jury. I don’t particulary care that it’s postponed, but I would want to know that it is happening. It’s such a fun part of the ESC season, and I would love to comment yet again. 🙂

Also, of course, I am super-excited to read what specific Wiwibloggers, and other commenters have to say. It’s the exchange of thoughts that makes it special.

PS. *channels with an ”s” for third person, but we don’t have editing anymore, so…

Any other year, I would agree with you. But, out of solidarity, sympathy or even outright pain, Ukraine will easily win this year’s contest. This then makes the Wiwi Jury analysis a fun activity that’s totally irrelevant this year, but still fun if you want to have it.
My point is: It’s probably not necessary this year. But have fun if it’s on. I’ll praise the songs that I like. 🙂

I understand your view, bit considering that the Wiwi Jury was always more about brainstorming and sharing opinions than actual predictions, I think it would be good to have it nonetheless. In any case, I have already written my reviews, and I’m sure some other posters did too. It’s a fun tradition. And even from a competitive standpoint, even if Ukraine is destined to win, I think that most fans would be very invested in how places 2-40 unravel. It might be less relevant to people outside of the ESC bubble, but we are deeply inside it. 🙂

I can’t agree. Who wins in May was never the point. There wasn’t even a contest in 2020, but still a Wiwi Jury.

I normally like to be wrong. This year is different, however, because me being wrong means that there is no solidarity in the ESC. Tough times ahead.

I am worried about the Wiwi Jury too Colin. I notice that Robyn has not put up a post for a while and I believe it is Robyn who has previously organized the scoring. If the worst comes to the worst, we will have to hijack some other posts to get our reviews up. I agree that it is a great deal of fun to read everyone’s reviews and there is nothing like a bit of an argument to keep us all feeling alive lol (please know that I regard all of this to be just a bit of fun… Read more »

Lyrics are good. Sometimes bit awkward but overall good. Thing that throws me off is melody that doesn’t connect to these lyrics whatsoever.

Even if the Wiwibloggers themselves haven’t prepared reviews for this year, it would be nice if we still had a post about each song where we can comment our personal reviews and discuss. If the Wiwi jury isn’t happening this year, I hope we at least get that. Hope that we will have a normal Wiwi jury like every year though!

I really like these lyrics, they feel the most authentic to me in terms of the real-life relationships issues I have had. Ok, they are not ground-breaking poetry, but in terms of building a real emotional connection, I think they do an excellent job. It covers very well that frustrated feeling when you deeply love someone but it is just not working out as you had hoped. For me, it speaks well to longer-term relationships which is surprising to me because Andrea is still relatively young but she captures that feeling very well.

The lyrics were a bit basic for my taste when I initially heard the song. But after a few listens, I can’t get it out of my head and I know the lyrics by heart. There’s something good in the simplicity too. Hope she qualifies. 🙂

Sorry, this is off-topic but I asked before…We are one month away from Eurovision. When are wiwi jury videos gonna drop? Wont there be any this year?
