Back in February Italian design firm Atelier Francesca Montinaro revealed its stage design.

Entitled “The Sun Within”, it plays on the movement and energy of the sun with a series of moving arches. From the sun we all draw life, so it’s fitting that the stage will be framed by water and “a lush Italian garden”. Yellow sun, blue water, green bush — we honour Mother Earth and say Amen!

Well on Thursday our shouts of praise got even louder as host broadcaster RAI revealed this rendering of the stage in motion. In it you see lights that seem to shoot from the arches, which spin 360 degrees for maximum versatility.

At times the structure appears to be a massive disco ball, glimmering in every direction and letting the world know the party has arrived.

“The kinetic sun, source of spectacular movements and tricks of light, rules the stage and represents our Italian attitude: always on the move, rebellious, creative, welcoming, passionate, intuitive. We are the ones with the sun within, and this is our way to be in this world.”

“The cascade of water that frames the stage, allegorically represents the sea that surrounds us, a symbol of our complex culture. The stage is our peninsula: a country where each contestant is welcomed, no matter where they are coming from.”

“The artists and their teams will be hosted in a lush Italian garden, where vegetation mingles with rays of light, suspended between reality and illusion, transporting them to a playful and architectural dimension.”

I dont see the hype i think the thing in the middle will distract too much and ruin many performances if not staged correctly. But i love the water part of it

Watching all this, it feels so weird Italy was gone from the contest for such a long time.
But when they finally came back, they did it with a BANG!
They haven´t sent a single bad song since then…

Francesca Montinaro in an interview said there will be fans standing in the arena between the stage (the secondary front stage) and the green room.

Wow, it’s amazing! Like the other people said, I hope all the delegations will use the best of the stage, since each act can use the stage differently. And the waterfall looks so cool!

It’s so modern, classy and stylish, but at the same time it’s reminds me of 70s Eurovision stages.

I love Portugal but they are gonna give us 5 women sitting in stools in front of that giant thing that will be static the whole time with the same LED graphics we saw at FdC.

This might be the best stage Eurovision’s ever had. It’s classy but cool, soft but dynamic, big but not empty. Really the whole package for me.

this looks wonderful. the stage is huge but at the same time it won’t look empty. and the design is so versatile that everyone will be able to get the best out of it.

The possibilities seem to be endless with this stage. Poland can get their river, Iceland their rising sun, Lithuania and Slovenia their disco vibes, Spain some neon night life arches, North Macedonia can have their circles and Sweden end the performance with a bigger one, etc, etc. Hopefully the delegations will know how to play with it. Last year, for example, only Italy made good use of the opening led wall (what an entrance!).

Yeah, another example of a waste would be Lisbon 2018 when only Austria used that raised platform thingy. Hopefully the people doing the stagings this year have some imagination.

I’m not even a big fan of Austria’s stagint that year, but it’s true, they were the only ones that remembered to use the feature. Sometimes I wonder if some delegations don’t come up with the plans before knowing everything the stage can do.

I had completely forgot, but you’re right, Benny also came from the back of the stage. I guess the camera work could do better, because it hasn’t been a memorable moment. Italy had that cool thing of Damiano inviting us to the stage. In Benny’s case, it’s more like he got to the stage through a catwalk, but the notion of motion was harmed by the distant angle.

One cool thing is that, since the stage is already sort of a prop, low budget won’t be a issue as long the delegations have a plan. I’m optimistic.

The last years opening door were not only doors but also light walls used by several acts like Switzerland for example.

The most interesting part are those arches and they’re not even that interesting.
I wish we could go back 10-15-20 years ago, when stage designs were actually unique and interesting.

The stage is okay. I would rather that the producers focus on the leaderboard design. I’m sick of seeing the same rectangle shapes each year.

I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT!

So complex and original, from the moving sun, to the spotlights being built atop of it, to the little garden in the green room, to the circular shape of the stage! MAGNIFICENT! AND WE HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN THE WATERFALL YET! My favorite staging since Austria 2015, it looks SO PERFECT!

And there are also the water arches crossing upon the two side catwalks. Crazy. Singer could actually walk to the secondary stage passing under an arch of water.

Well, it’s certainly not minimalistic or simplistic. A move I expected from the Italians.

Excited to see how the features of the stage work with different acts!
