Review: Brooke – “That’s Rich”
Jonathan: No doubt one of the most contemporary and radio friendly songs Ireland has sent to Eurovision in the past decade, “That’s Rich” takes the attitude of Olivia Rodrigo and GAYLE but packages it up into a sassy pop offering. There’s been a gradual improvement in Brooke’s live performances but there’s still too many occasions where we can see her thinking about the choreography, which takes away from the confident and sassy character she needs to portray. Regardless, the song itself is a feisty and punchy number that deserves to be on repeat.
Score: 8.5
Deban: I liked this entry until it hit the “spoken word segment”. Sounding like something that Lindsay Lohan would’ve released during her teenage reign, “That’s Rich” is the likeable misfit that brings the pyjama party to Turin. It’s fun, it’s cute and nostalgic without being dated. Also, Brooke’s playful spirit is a major selling point here. Nonetheless, this piece of plastic pop plays it too safe. There are no shifting sonic turns, big vocal moments or cutting-edge choreography to breathe new life to it.

Antranig: Ladies and gentlemen, your queen has arrived! “That’s Rich” is one of the first Eurovision 2022 entries I heard and I never get tired of hearing it. It has been stuck in my head on and off for a couple of months and I don’t see that changing before May. The lyrics are extremely sassy, Brooke is a relatable performer and, simply put, this is a really good pop song. I wouldn’t call this a guilty pleasure of mine – this is unashamedly one of my favourite songs of Eurovision 2022.

Oliver: Fiery girl bops are few and far between this year. But Brooke is bringing the fun. A nod to feminine empowerment, “That’s Rich” fills the dancefloor and brings out the listener’s inner provocateur with its flirtatious and feisty lyrics. Bar the distorted middle eight, it’s a solid studio cut. Red flags pop up in Brooke’s live performance. She’s got the vocal prowess, but her staging needs a drastic overhaul. A set of faux-silk Primark pyjamas doesn’t scream rich. With a bit of extra polishing to the visual presentation and Brooke’s confidence on stage, Team Ireland will have glowing product.
Score: 6.5
Luis: “That’s Rich” may not be the most impactful and original pop track ever, but it’s fun, fresh and unapologetic, and I’m all for it. Brooke delivers the song with sass, although previous live performances have shown that some tweaks are needed. In a way, it’s monotonous and not so original, but there’s this party element to it that makes it instantly likeable.

It kind of sounds like a B side track from Marina & the diamonds, so I like it.
It’s not the most sophisticated songwriting, but it’s fun to listen to so I don’t get all the hate here.
I don’t understand why this is rated so highly. The song is lame, unmemorable pop with yet another variation of that old I-don’t-need-no-man-look-at-me-I’m-so-confident schtick. The girl’s stage presence is irritating and her voice is weak, to boot.

This is a typical NON qualifier. Why is this placed SO high? This has nothing to do with music. Ireland definitely needs to take Eurovision serious to ever get the chance to qualify. This is a zero pointer in the semi.

I think I will also be in trouble when two specific songs need to be reviewed.
I feel like Norway, Latvia, Moldova, and Serbia are all so in your face that they ask for extreme reactions. Reviews should be compelling to read. I am actually looking forward to negative reviews of Norway and to the positive reviews of Moldova. If they are well written, they can show me the other side of things.
That’s what’s great with reading the reviews of others. I like Serbia, Norway and Moldova to varying degrees but I’m not a fan of Latvia. And especially the post about Serbia will be interesting to read because I think that’s the most divisive entry of the year.
Moldova was way down my list but it has been slowly rising over the past few weeks. I think I have accepted the ridiculousness of it and jumped on board the train – the live performances have even dialed up the rock elements so like Thanos, who knows this might end up being pretty high.
Maybe that’s what it is with Latvia? I just need to go with the fun of it all – I can’t imagine myself doing that but who knows. I just hope nobody gets offended by my review, it’s just a bit of fun!
For me it’s a simple matter of musical taste. Moldova is of genre which even when executed way better just isn’t for me. I can deal with Latvia in a musical aspect. It’s not great, but it’s not awful either.

The version of the song performed at the pre-parties (which will perhaps be the version they will perform on the big stage as well) really looks like it’s made for a live performance. And the elements of rock incorporated with the original ethnic elements make it more accessible to people listening to it for the first time. I am now actually more convinced than ever that this will qualify. And do good in the final as a matter of fact.

The UK can vote in semi final 2 and we do like a girl bop so she could get some good points. I think she’s definitely getting better with every live performance.
I’m sure the fact she’s from northern Ireland and participated in the voice uk will help too, but the 10 or 12pts uk will send her way are not enough in isolation

34. Ireland: A part of me vibes with this song as it has some guilty pleasure qualities. But this doesn’t mean that I find this song good. I think that Ireland really needs to rethink its approach to the contest as “That’s Rich” will not get past the semi finals in my opinion. I don’t have much else to say here.
Whether of result, Ireland needed this kind of music. A palate cleanser from the crooning and wholesome facade, just unabashed fun, and lowkey addictive.
IRELAND – During the last few months, this has grown on me and is now a certified guilty pleasure. It’s unpretentious and fun. There is a certain charm that Brooke’s honest stage presence brings to this. It doesn’t aim at pulling your heartstrings or leaving you in awe of its grandeur, but it does make you sing along. We disagree on Ireland since I have it really low and isn’t really my cup of tea (my review of this entry is awaiting moderation and it hasn’t appeared yet). But I get that it has a guilty pleasure value. Sometimes it tries to become a guilty pleasure for as well but up to now I am good at not letting it do so 🙂
I think there’s some of song in here and definitely, it was the right choice in the Irish selection. I mean, it wasn’t even close. It was the only song that even remotely gave them a chance. Brooke is probably the best thing about this. She’s improving with each live performance and whereas, originally, the vocals were noticeably an issue, I think with time, they’re up to a standard that doesn’t make you focus on them being…not great. I like it, but I understand that it’s low hanging fruit. I find Brooke adorable, even if the song is between cute and annoying. That’s why this is an actual guilty pleasure of mine (unlike Croatia, who is just nice). As for the jury score, you are probably right. Without knowing the staging or how the package turns out on the night, I can see Ireland, Romania, North Macedonia, and San Marino all being in bottom 5 for the juries. A competent song where the melodies and rhythms all match the syllables of the words perfectly. The lack of syncopation also creates a nice flow to the song and makes it easy to sing along to. However, the main issues with the song are the spoken-word part and how it makes the singer seem really unlikeable. The spoken word part is really proving to be a sticking point for some people. I’m starting to wonder if I’m a little bit off in not minding it.
A typical Yaas Queen bop gets an insanely Hugh score on wiwibloggs. Not shocked. This song is also favourite to come last in it’s semi. Also not a shock.
Not favourite to come last, just least favourite to qualify, there is a difference. Brooke has a narrow path to qualification.

I think Brooke is a lovely person and singer but she can’t sing this song…. The garbage styling and choreo doesn’t help. Ireland likely won’t improved which will lead them placing in the bottom 3 of SF2 if not dead last in the semi for the third year in a row.

It has a “girl next door singing with her hairbrush” ingenuity that I appreciate. But Eurovision has evolved immensely in the last decade and what worked for “Satellite” won’t work again in 2022. The chorus is an earworm though. I can see myself years from now still singing mentally a “Bye bye, fool” to someone that was bothering me until I silenced them on my cell phone. The spoken bridge, on the other hand, is grating and a little embarrassing when performed live. All things considered, it’s a fun unpretentious entry. 5.5/10

I don’t think I have a huge problem with the spoken part of the song though. It does tend to be a welcome break and does add a bit of variety. I mean, I don’t find it any more embarrassing than anything else in the song.

Wow, I didn’t expect that score. And, probably, with all my respects, it doesn’t deserve it at all. The song is a decent effort but the whole act sounds and looks a bit amateurish. So, while it is enjoyable and Brooke oozes energy and attitude which gives extra points, that isn’t enought to not think this is gonna flop (in the first place it shouldn’t be called a flop because it shouldn’t be up there, but…). I have no idea why there is such little ‘odds love’ for this track- it’s very radio friendly. The only way I can see it not qualifying is a live ‘crash and burn’.

Go on Brooke! One of the most improved acts across all the Eurovision pre-parties. She’s actually put in the effort to give something different for each event.
The song is current and a definite upgrade for Ireland . However , we saw what a bad/mediocre live can do as with Leslie. Brooke has some shaky vocals and some weird fashion choices and Ireland isn’t a televote powerhouse exactly. I like the song , the hook is catchy. Ireland definitely has a chance at qualification.

Way too cliché to earn such a high score. But then again, this jury gave the 2014 entry an even higher score, and it ended up NQ. They didn’t even bother to make a decent video for Brooke to sell (1) the song itself and (2) the story in that song. They just put her in front of a screen inside a warehouse and called it a day. ?
I doubt that they will even try to sell the song appropriately on stage, and I expect the same result as last year. They learned nothing from their 2018 campaign.
For what it’s worth, I believe she already had the music video made before she actually won the selection? Is it worth making a new video before Eurovision? I’m not sure.
I will say I was kinda hopeful for Ireland when I saw the whole of the Commonwealth in the Second Semi (UK, Australia, Malta, Cyprus), and I want this to qualify (don’t get me wrong, I love the song) but I’m just a bit pessimistic about its qualification. Could this be similar to Ireland 2021? A borderline qualifier that WiwiJury puts high, but doesn’t qualify due to poor staging? Who knows until the rehearsals.

You can’t be serious Wiwibloggs. This is literally the weakest song in the contest. Last year Ireland was badly overrated here too and this year it will be the same. This poor song will end up last in the SF. It’s not only very bad songwise, but vocally she’s a complete disaster too.
This is gonna qualify. The WiwiBloggs team don’t play around. If a song isn’t of good quality they ain’t gonna give it a high score. Brooke is an amazing performer and these bad comments sound so childish and butthurt. Just accept that Brooke is gonna do well
ireland 2021 (7th in wiwi jury) spain 2019 (6th), belgium 2018 (2nd!!!!!), malta 2021 (3rd), finland 2018 (3rd) all beg to differ. if anything there is at least 2 or 3 top 10 wiwi jury each year that dont qualify or flop big time
Most of this is true, but Malta 2021 finished 6th. That’s not a big leap from 3rd. It’s a huge success nonetheless and it feels unfair to Destiny not to refer to her amazing result as underachievement. And it’s not like her song is in my top 10, I’m just being objective.

As a song, it’s really bland and kinda forgettable (i still can’t remember how the song goes except the first 2 lines of the chorus). Brooke tho is a constantly improved performer but I don’t think it can go higher than 13th in its semi. I honestly can’t understand why Ireland is overhyped by Wiwi just like last year when everyone can see that the song isn’t worth of a hype..

How exactly is it bias? Do they have a connection to her? Overall the eurovision community is biased. But this year Ireland doesn’t seem to be very popular with the community so it seems like the wiwibloggs team is unaffected by the common opinion and went with what they think themselves. That’s the opposite of being biased.
I don’t think you can throw around the word “bias” here. You know that the Wiwi jury is made up of a number of younger members and that is exactly the demographic that the Irish entry is aimed at.
The score is definitely a little high but I don’t think bias is the reason.
7.41 seems too high for the Wiwi jury, who, SO FAR, have been INCREDIBLY HARSH to some of the other songs. I was for sure thinking they were gonna underate this one, but INSTEAD, they’ve overrated it in comparison to the other songs so far!!!

I think that today you and I can share some similar sentiments, Darren. 🙂 Both Ireland and Croatia have sent songs that are okay for what they are going for (energetic bop / slow country-pop), even if neither feels like a top ten material. Both of them are likely staying in the semi, but I’d be pleasantly surprised if either of them actually qualifies. Ireland is my borderline qualifier of semi 2, and Croatia is either my 10th or 11th in the 1st. Very similar trajectories, even if the songs are different. 🙂
