The Big 5Spain, Italy, France, United Kingdom and Germany – are heading into Eurovision 2022 with much to live up to (or prove). They’re the countries who automatically have a spot in the Eurovision grand final due to their financial contribution to the contest.

Italy emerged victorious at Eurovision 2021, securing the first Big 5 victory in over a decade. And while France followed closely behind in second, the other three were left languishing at the completely opposite end of the scoreboard.

For Eurovision 2022, each of these countries will be hoping to land at the top end of leaderboard. But which of them do you think has a chance of doing so?

We want to hear from you. Remind yourself of the entries each of the Big 5 are sending to this year’s contest. Then vote for your favourites in our poll.

Scroll down to vote in our poll

Big 5 acts at Eurovision 2022

France: Alvan & Ahez – “Fulenn”

For the first time ever, there will be no song in the French language at Eurovision this year. That’s in part due to the fact that France have decided to sing in Breton instead. Alvan & Ahez are set to perform the fiery “Fulenn” at Eurovision 2022. Will they snatch the gold at the contest?

Germany: Malik Harris – “Rockstars”

With a national final called Germany 12 Points, the country will certainly be hoping to hear those exact words in May. It was Malik Harris who won over the German public at the national final with his song “Rockstars”. Can he win over the rest of Europe as well?

Italy: Mahmood & Blanco – “Brividi”

After finishing second at Eurovision 2019, Mahmood is back with the aim of going one place higher in 2022. He’s not alone, though, and is joined by Blanco for the duet “Brividi”. Can the home act give Italy a second win in a row?

Spain: Chanel – “SloMo”

Spain launched the national final Benidorm Fest to find their act for Eurovision 2022. It was Chanel who emerged as the winner after giving a jaw-dropping performance of “SloMo”. Does she get your vote?

United Kingdom: Sam Ryder – “SPACE MAN”

The United Kingdom have internally selected TikTok sensation Sam Ryder. He’s hoping to skyrocket to the top of the leaderboard with the song “SPACE MAN”. Do you think the UK can blast off to success?

Poll: Which Big 5 country has the best entry at Eurovision 2022?

In this poll, you can vote for as many of the Big 5 as you would like. However, you can only vote once – so choose wisely!

Who did you vote for? Do you think a Big 5 victory is on the cards again for Eurovision 2022? Let us know down below in the comments.

France is the most original, but they’ve been crap in rehearsals, and France has a bad record for staging, apart from last year. If they can stage it right, Spain should win, but again, Spain has a bad record for staging. Italy won’t do as well as people think. A mawkish song that reminds me of Spain’s entry in 2018 sung by Amaia and Alfred. That failed to excite the audience and I think Italy may well meet the same fate. UK will do better than they have for decades, but it’s not that interesting as a song. I predict… Read more »

Spain year after year after year after year after year after year and more… has always been underestimated and this year it has a proposal with the possibility of being in the top 10, is it overrated? Oh God! Some people and their comments are so embarrassing ?????

[DISCLAIMER: PERSONAL OPINION] This is apparently a very unpopular opinion between ESC fans, but to me French song this year is the worst one, not only the worst of the Big5 but the whole contest… okay maybe ahead of Malta… the song itself gives me a migraine don’t know why.
Italy is my #1 so there it goes my vote for you.

Only Germany, the rest of them are overrated (especially Spain and UK, who are TOO enthusiastic and after the Eurovision final they’ll realise they are both doomed for last places)…

I agree, I like Spain and UK but I found them a little bit overrated only because they started taking Eurovision more seriously after the Maneskin’s victory.

I think that Germany is underrated (nothing new)

There we go. The absolute YAS act is Chanel -> Spain. The hottest act is Brividi. ughhhh Mahmood I mean who isn’t obsessed with him???? The cutest act is the man from Germany. Last but not least the most overrated act is the UK, which is such a shame , cause I prefer the UK music market rather than the American one. And ohh I forgot about France. I just don’t know what to think about it. Not my type of music, and it’s not that overrated. Btw Sam is a great vocalist, don’t get me wrong

Germany is a nice song but I dont like the way the guy sings, his voice is a bit annoying. UK is just OK i dont see anything special but if there are many people who do, then I suppose the ‘problem’ is with me rather than the song. France, i like it very much if I listen to it, if i watch performance I dont like it so much. Too messy, too wtf elements. Italy i dont like it at all. I think it is a pretentious gay love song (i am gay too but more into gay sex… Read more »

Many think that the song focuses in particular on homosexual love. When asked to comment on this interpretation of the text, they replied: “They destroy everything we want to tell, we want to bring the universal freedom to feel free to be able to express any kind of love. In general, in its wholeness. Brividi’s main theme is the discomfort of not feeling 100% accepted. We don’t want to pigeonhole love, we want to give it 100% free rein. We never mention the word ‘love’ because it is not just about love, but the desire to get involved and take… Read more »

The U.K. is at the very top of my evaluations overall. Four of the Big 5 (U.K., Italy, France and Spain, in that order) are in my top 10. Germany needs a Michael Schulte (4th in 2018) type of stage setup to avoid bringing home its 3rd-straight blank televote scorecard, even though I think Malik will get more than 3 jury points.

Im tired of all the comparisons Chanel get to Eleni and fuego. Yall talk about fuego like its the second coming of christ and it literally just a good performance. And also why is it only the women that get compared and not the 10 thousand sad boys singing ballads?

Because songs in italian do not sound weird… I mean i love songs in any language but some languages sound a bit too ‘another language (ish)’ if you know what i mean. I think this is part of the reason why no matter what they present they always end up well. Italian is an ear friendly language.

My ranking of the Big 5: 1. France – banger in a minority language. I like. Let’s hope they work on their act 2. Italy – not usually a fan of somber ballads, but this one gives me goosebumps in a good way. They need to polish up their vocals a wee bit, but otherwise with some simple staging it will score well. 3. UK (although very close with Italy) – first time I liked a UK immediately. He’s got great vocals. He’ll need to perform it just right to finally get the UK on the left side of the… Read more »

Has to be the strongest Big 5 since that rule was implemented, the UK, France and Italy all being top 10 material, at the very least.
Not a massive fan of SloMo but I wouldn’t mind seeing it on the (lower) left-hand side since their NF was a clear step in the right direction.
Germany, not unbearable like those sisters a few years back or Jendrik, but still, better luck next year…

Read more »

I’m not loving the French entry ( it’s not on my top 5), although I’m strongly in favour of more language diversity in the festival. Hopefully France’s foreseeable success will set a precedent and we’ll have less English-language songs in the future.
