The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 40 competing songs in Eurovision 2022. Next we review Finland, who have chosen The Rasmus with “Jezebel”.

Were we ready to rock along? Read on to find out!

The Rasmus – “Jezebel” (Finland Eurovision 2022)

Review: The Rasmus – “Jezebel”

Deban: The Rasmus are tried, tested and know what they’re doing. With sales in excess of five million records and a solid catalogue of nine hit albums, having them in the Eurovision landscape is a blessing. Their song “Jezebel” salutes the original biblical troublemaker. She’s a fierce rebel that’s set to take the continent by storm. With infectious hooks, a rock edge and the noughties nostalgia, this is destined to be one of 2022’s most memorable entries.

Score: 8.5

Oliver: There’s a lot to love about The Rasmus. A tonal shift from their competitors with retro sounds and visuals pulled from gritty anti-hero DC comics, their efforts to spark the emo renaissance don’t go unnoticed. But while great in theory, “Jezebel” is sloppy in execution. The phrasing and metre of the chorus is off-putting, the transition from verse to chorus is jarring, and the lyrics push way too deep into try-hard edgelord territory. Elsewhere, the track sounds overcrowded, with none of the instruments or vocals having their own space to shine within the mix. Qualification is likely, but Finland shouldn’t rest on its laurels.

Score: 3

William: “Jezebel” is a classic pop-rock number with an accessible theme and an easy-on-the-ears chorus. As a studio cut it’s safe and somewhat middle-of-the-road. But live The Rasmus work their magic to create something in-your-face and memorable — you feel like you’re at a real rock concert. Channelling the Biblical troublemaker and serving her naughtiness and edge, the stage becomes a vehicle on which they can really slay. Depending on how hard they go this could really surprise on the scoreboard.

Score: 7

Angus: Finland’s entry feels curiously tame for a glam rock number and perhaps more worryingly does precious little to encourage enthusiastic headbanging, which is surely one of the best measures of a strong rock entry. That said, it does at least have a great narrative going for it and what is certain is that The Rasmus will deliver a visually arresting performance. One just wishes the live performance would have been matched to a better song in the first place.

Score: 3

Antranig: Never has there been a song I want to like more than I want to like “Jezebel”, but it doesn’t live up to its potential. Musically, the song is brilliantly constructed. The Rasmus have great stage presence and can really sell this package in a live performance. My issue with “Jezebel” is the lyrics – the message of the song, in places, is incoherent and poorly constructed. It’s almost as though someone threw a dictionary into a blender, picked out some of the scraps and tried to turn them into sentences. The Rasmus are an incredible addition to the Eurovision family, yet I can’t help but want more from their song.

Score: 6

The lyrics are weird, its about a human without a head. The head is in the fridge.

And at midnight its apparently time to put the face/head on. So this person is creepy at day and normal at night krvetjwtjöwtjöwt

I was going to compare this song to another one I have loved but I feel that would be an insult to that song. It has similar vibes but that song was epic and iconic.

This song just feels flat every time it’s performed live. I want to love it but please can you at LEAST nail the live performance just once? Pretty please?

10.Finland – An absolute banger. The singer’s voice could maybe improve a bit, but they have a great visual presentation and an amazing song. Finland going back to rock year after year, this should still work.

7/10 The main thing that bugs me about this song is the lyrics, they’re so odd? I usually love odd, but Jezebel’s lyrics to me just don’t fit together? I do think there were better options in UMK, but this is a solid package- I did like their staging at UMK.

I don’t know if the lyrics are quite as successful as you say they are but I do share your general excitement for the entry on a purely musical level.
The additional fame behind the act doesn’t hurt the profile of the contest either. Good luck, Finland!

This is an awesome take and I am also genuinely excited that they’re there. I am somebody who didn’t really care for The Rasmus at the height of their fame but I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like the music they’ve put forward in this entry. I think we all know they’re going to put on a good show, too. We should be grateful they’re there!

I really like this, but Eurovision fans mild reactions seem to start with “I heard In the Shadows years ago..” and then starts the comparing with these two, but if we just talk about this song in particular it stands out as the most competetive rock song this year.

If the stage show goes well I could see this as a likeable entry to gain the attention of those who like rock, but not hard rock.

If this song had been internally-selected and put forward, I think the reaction would’ve more favourable and one of genuine excitement. The fact that this won a selection widely-regarded to be amongst the best in Europe this season has probably left a lot of fans still feeling a bit sour towards what is a very solid effort from Finland. People are even trying to manifest non-qualification on this for a number of reasons and that just doesn’t seem realistic. This is a solid result waiting to happen for Finland. It’s got a great early 2000s sound to it (as it… Read more »

Trust me, I’ve always been a fan of these kind of songs. Especially when it comes to Eurovision. But this one… I don’t know it feels slightly dated and certainly less impactful than any other rock entries we’ve seen in Eurovision. It wasn’t even the best song in UMK2022. I’m sure The Rasmus won because of their already established popularity. “Jezebel” isn’t “In the Shadows” While relying in their popularity and fanbase might work again in May, they should bring a terrific live performance to really go for something bigger. And I’m not only talking about the staging but also… Read more »

14. Finland – The Rasmus – Jezebel 7.5/10 – a confident and accomplished rock performance. This doesn’t push the boundaries in any way and it sounds like the type of song we have heard plenty of times before, but this is the polished offering of an experienced act with strong guitar and drum work, the requisite catchy hook and the instantly accessible theme. Add in the professionalism of the live performance and I expect this to be an explosive moment in Turin.

Same exact position currently, Kosey. You’re right in that this is pretty safe by Eurovision standards but, at the same time, I think that’s why it’s going to get a good result in the final. This is a song for televoters at home, not for dedicated Eurovision fans.

Completely agree with your view on this, I can see it doing really well – top 10 is likely. It ticks a lot of the boxes for it to have an instant impact – visually arresting, familiar sound, catchy chorus, accessible theme – it is not a song to adore or obsess about, but lots of people are going to enjoy it and therefore I expect it will do well. And I have no problem with that, it sits firmly in my “like” category.

I, like every European millennial, have listened to “In the Shadows” about a million times as a kid, so the nostalgia factor is huge; and yet I’m not a fan of this song. It’s nothing special musically and the lyrics seem so dumb to me. + Hearing a woman’s name 1000 times in a song is something I’d rather leave in the last century, and Jezebel is one of the worst sounding ones to me too.

I love The Rasmus, and I love “Jezebel.” It is a little bit basic for a rock song, but that is arguably part of its charm. The guitar melody and the vocal melodies are “rock anthem” worthy for sure. As has been explained by others, this will inevitably get compared to last year’s winner, which may or may not work against them.
N.B. This song is ranked 8th in my top 10.

I’m really glad that you have it in your top 10, Purple. I have it in my top 15 and do genuinely like it. It’s one of those songs that you can just enjoy without thinking too much about it. If that makes it “basic”, then I guess I’m basic. XD

FINLAND – I am a huge fan of In the Shadows, and having The Rasmus at the ESC feels surreal and super-cool! Unfortunately, this continues the trend of me rarely agreeing with the Fins about which song is to be sent from the usually strong bunch in UMK. From the standpoint of production quality, this is of a high standard. The hook ”Jezebel” is very punchy, and the composition feels well put together. The lyrics feel like they have been written by a teen living in the early 2000s. It means that they are full of clichés about a strong… Read more »

Not super-surprised by the rating itself but I might be surprised where this will fall in your ranking. Where is it currently sitting?
Definitely agreeing with you about the national final. There were two songs there that would’ve held their own against the best that 2022 had to offer without relying on nostalgia to this extent but, nostalgia can bring about good results so I’m not saying it’s a bad choice, it’s just a choice.
Comparing it to Finland’s entry last year, this is by far my preference. But, even I acknowledge that this going to get a lesser result.

Colin

It is musically stronger than lyrically. ”A girl who looks like she’s a boy” is out there with ”Making you the one I want and I’m not even topless (Be cautious)” as the most cringe lyrics of this line-up. If the lyrics were better (at least okay), this would likely skyrocket on my list. As it is, it’s my 30th. It’s the lowest ranking song over 6 at this point. Might go higher later on.
And yes, Bess would be around my 7th place, and Isaac around my 13th.

Pablo Nava

I’ve grown to kind of like this song in studio, but 2022 is kind of the worst time for them to appear, because comparisons between last year are likely to be automatic if not “antique band wants relevance again”. The live in comparison to the studio also feels pretty thin. I believe qualification is likely but juries may gloss them over.

Considering it’s a competent rock song performed by an experienced band that has many fans around Europe, I assume Finland will do well, even if matching Blind Channel’s results is a tall order to take. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, “Jezebel” has good instrumentals and The Rasmus obviously knows how to use a stage (Emppu is fantastic!). On the other hand, the clunk lyrics have moments of bad taste, use clichés and get strong women completely wrong. Lauri’s live vocals are another point of concern. 6.25/10

Oh, Tibor! Glad to know you’re fine (well, at least alive and typing) and our exchange wasn’t the one to blame for your disappearance. Hope the reasons that made you take a time off aren’t anything serious. I’m missing your reviews here. About the lyrics of “Jezebel”, “Killer shark in heels” is indeed awful, but nothing is worst than “a girl who looks like she’s a boy”, a line so tone death and out of touch that could offend at least half a dozen (being conservative with the numbers) of different groups of people. The Rasmus’ luck is that this… Read more »

There are other interpretations of these lyrics, of course. It is a rock song, so this is highly likely. Here are some alternatives to think about: – In the Bible, Jezebel is a condemned queen. – “Killer shark in heels” could be describing a man in drag. – There is the “in my blood” lyric, so the song could literally be about an STD. This also connects with “was it the dangerous things you do” and the “leave a scar on a heart” lyrics. – “A girl who looks like she’s a boy” could be many things, including referring to… Read more »

I think you’ve got a really good take on this one, Sabrina. If these lyrics were actually written successfully and conveyed the message that I honestly believe were intended (an intention missed though) then Empuu is an absolutely fantastic presence on-stage to direct that powerful, don’t-give-a-damn woman that “Jezebel” is supposed to be. But, those lyrics choices just make it so hard for that to be the message to take away.
Musically, I think it’s fine. The lyrics are holding it back from doing what they want it to do.

Sabrina

I agree that the intentions were probably positive, and by having Emppu right there, better lyrics about a strong female figure could have a huge impact. But the lyrics sadly feel like an older man trying to sound youthful with outdated references.

16. Finland: I was very supportive of “Jezebel” in the beginning but since it won UMK it has gradually been falling in my top. The truth is that if we ignore the Rasmus’ fame and past songs, “Jezebel” is a mediocre rock tune. It has its nice moments like the bridge before the final chorus and the final chorus itself but it also has some flaws. The most striking of these for me is the lack of rhyme in the chorus, which makes the singing feel disconnected from the music. And of course we can all agree that the lyrics… Read more »

I definitely think “medicore” is a bit of a harsh word to use on this one, Thanos. It has its issues but there is quality and effort there. Something like Bulgaria would be more on the “mediocre” side (people need to stop call it bad because it’s not) whereas this deserves a little bit more.
Your criticism about the lyrics and live vocals are valid though.

Yes perhaps mediocre was a strong word. I like Jezebel and I want to do well. And yes the instrumental itself is really qualitative. And I agree with you about Bulgaria as well. When the time for that review comes I will have ranked it surely better than most other reviewers. Not extremely high but not terribly low as well. Because as you said Intention is not bad just mediocre.

This is one of those songs that fans really like and then they are shocked when it does not qualify for the finals. I’m afraid Finland had better options this year. Europe actually sets the bar very high for big names and if the expectations are not met, people get disappointed and the country does not do well. Hope the Rasmus proves me wrong.

I can tell why some people don’t like this but a 5,53 seems a bit harsh for me. It’s the best rock song of this year, that’s for sure. I’d def understand if that was i.g Denmark’s score but The Rasmus really don’t deserve this. They know how to elevate a performance and this can help them qualify. The song is good, I never understood why the lyrics are bad as many claim, nice melodies but the vocals could have been better in the verses.

OK, here’s my take on the song: WHAT?! The Wiwi Jury only gave Finland a rank of 5.53 this year? This is too harsh. The Rasmus is one of Finland’s most respectable rock bands, so I don’t see any reason to underrate them. “Jezebel” is all that’s good in a Finnish rock song, and as we all know, Finland takes rock music very seriously. EXTREMELY FAIR OVERALL SCORE! While the music is somehow decent, the lyrics are way too edgy and have a provocative sense of vulgarly and draw me off even more than San Marino. Not to mention that Lauri (is that the name of the lead singer? I have never heard of The Rasmus before, to be completely honest, despite their 15+ year career) cannot sing this live without struggling to catch a breath. It’s an opener that I won’t really be enjoying and would probably preffer to not listen to on repeat. My 37TH place with a 4/10 RATING.
