Intelligent Music Project Intention Bulgaria 2022

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 40 competing songs in Eurovision 2022. Next we review Bulgaria, who have chosen Intelligent Music Project with “Intention”.

Did we find the entry intelligent? Read on to find out!

Intelligent Music Project – “Intention” (Bulgaria Eurovision 2022)

Review: Intelligent Music Project – “Intention”

Robyn: With a group name like Intelligent Music Project, it’s clear that this group is not trying to achieve Måneskin levels of coolness. The supergroup of experienced rock musicians is doing what they’re good at, serving plenty of ’80s-style FM radio rock without a self-conscious play for nostalgia. And there’s something appealing and enjoyable about that – a slice of dad-rock amongst all the pop kids.

Score: 6

William: No matter their “Intention”, this is flat, bland, disappointing and ultimately forgettable. They sing they’re never in the safety zone, yet this feels unbearably safe. The tolerable verses lead to an underwhelming chorus: It’s lazy and lacks punch… the exact opposite of what you’d expect from rock. The bridge sounds out-of-place and the guitar riff is irritating. This may be music, but it’s definitely not intelligent.

Score: 2.5

Angus: Were we talking about Eurovision 1992 then Bulgaria might be in a better spot, but unfortunately “Intention” finds itself entirely out of place thirty years later. In stark contrast to its lyrics, “Intention” is firmly in the safety zone: A predictable, by numbers rock effort and one that sounds extremely dated. With rock entries you want to be electrified and this unfortunately is more of a short circuit.

Score: 1

Jonathan: There’s been a lot of strong emotions about “Intention” since its release. Yet, the main word that comes to mind when listening to the song is “average”. It’s a decent enough rock song, if rather dated, but that’s where things plateau. We’ve heard this sort of thing many times before and Intelligent Music Project don’t produce anything innovative or exciting to make it stand out from the pack. Whilst there might be an initial desire to rock along, it fades away once you can predict exactly where the song is going.

Score: 5

Antranig: There’s nothing better than a great rock song at Eurovision but there’s nothing worse than a bad one. If the “Intention” was to stay in the semi-final, Bulgaria have hit the nail on the head. This song feels as though it was written in someone’s garage in about 12 minutes after a Sunday afternoon barbecue. It feels like it remains in third gear for three minutes and never picks up any momentum. I appreciate Bulgaria trying something different, but it’s a no from me.

Score: 3

This song shows the horrible truth rock elitists don’t want to admit: dad rock has aged like milk. I used to like 70s and 80s in my early twenties but now I’m about to become 30 years old I realize it’s cringy and as shallow and prefabricated as your average teen idol (maybe even more). I’ll copy and paste a comment I saw in YouTube written by the user Ryan Marcantonio: The difference between this and Maneskin and blind channel is that, they brought something fresh and new that hasn’t been heard before. This sound has been heard thousands of… Read more »

3/10 This is going to sound harsh, but this entry is terrible. Not only is the song extremely outdated, but considering Bulgaria’s strong entries from 2016-2021 onward it makes this entry even more unbearable and just sad to listen to. The only slightly redeeming quality for me is possibly that it’s a Rock song and I love Rock at Eurovision… usually…

20. Bulgaria – Intelligent Music Project – Intention – 7/10 – unfairly treated by the community, this is a competent rock track with a killer riff to start things off. The verse and the pre-chorus are strong and the chorus is memorable even if it loses a bit of thrust from the anticipation built before. The drum work could perhaps be a little more dynamic at times and I would personally like the guitar solo to be a little more extravagant – perhaps it will be live. Overall, though, there are this is an enjoyable three minutes that holds its… Read more »

Thanks Briekimchi. Perhaps Bulgaria gets some extra points from me because it is a genre that I really like? Intention is certainly not amongst my favourites but I do find it generally enjoyable and have been puzzled by the overwhelmingly negative reaction it seems to have garnered from the community. As others have said, I think a lot of this is down to the fact it was released early (and therefore had increased focus), is coming off the back of Victoria (who many people loved) and the fact that many people don’t actually appreciate rock music (whilst pretending to when… Read more »

I’ve never been one to defend our own entry, but honest to God I don’t think this one deserved the endless bashing and constantly putting it in last place from the release untill now. To me it’s bad in an inoffensive way, it’s not something that actively annoys me or I can’t bear to listen to the entire song. It’s just a generic cringy rock song with an 80’s sound. To me it’s much more bearable than all the annual “artistic, emotional” bore fests (without naming any names). Maybe we got the worst treatment because we were stupidly the first… Read more »

As much as I like rock, I’m more inclined towards the alternative and indie categories. “Intention” tries to be classic but also modern and “happy” and the result it’s probably not what they were expecting or one I would expect. This entry isn’t working, the song ends up having no purpose at all and being as generic as a rock song can be. It’s completely lacking any soul. Consequently the three minutes the song lasts feel like an eternity. Overall, I wouldn’t say this is an intelligent music project by any means. And certainly it is obvious there has been… Read more »

This final score might appear cruel, but if you look at points made in the reviews, I think it’s ultimately justified.

I still don’t get it. They were the first to release their entry, got awful reviews, and yet, with months left to improve, they never really altered their song. With a little bit less ‘safety zone’ and instead more oomph in the chorus, this could have a been a whole new song and a totally different response to it …

Vivian
Vivian

The complete lack of positive response from everyone speaks for itself. This just feels rushed, without personality, without flavor, and most importantly, without a proper reason for people to keep this song running its full length. For me this song is only better than Sweden and Denmark, ranking-wise, but even that’s no accomplishment. This entry should have just been replaced by an actually proper song. It’s an even bigger shame knowing that the past years Bulgaria’s really been gaining traction. This is a 2/10 for me, and I hope next year Bulgaria takes the contest seriously again.

40.Bulgaria – Seems like really dated pop-rock, lyrics make me cringe with rock cliches, it’s not really what I was hoping for. And since it was released so early it will probably be forgotten and struggle a lot. The solo is cool, though.

I can’t imagine how disappointed the Bulgarian fans were this year when their entry was released in December. It’s not the worst entry in history, but it’s so dull and with the standard of Eurovision growing so much in recent years (with Bulgaria also seemingly doing the same) this stands no chance. Hopefully BNT gets everything in check next year and they’ll present something that will at least stand a chance of coming out of the bottom 3… 3/10

What I find particularly baffling about Bulgaria is the fact that when they released the song way back in December, I thought it was to get feedback on the song and to do a revamp. The way “Intention” became the fandom’s punchbag may lead an outsider to think this is one of the worst songs in History. It isn’t, there’s a lot of awful music out there. But shows how much ESC grew lately. A while ago, even with pointless lyrics, uninspired melody and a lame chorus, Bulgaria could find an audience just by offering something that isn’t uptempo pop or a power ballad (and has a semi cool guitar solo). Nowadays, the menu is much more varied and this doesn’t even feel like a style of rock many people would like to revisit. 4/10

I think most of us expected a lot better entries in general. Unfortunately, 2022 is a total letdown compared to 2021 and might even be the weakest year since 2011 or 2008.

But of course nobody knew or expected that when this song was released. And with Bulgaria becoming one of the most reliable Eurovision powerhouses, expectations were high, so ‘Intention‘ got slightly too harsh reviews.

Yet, even with all 40 songs known by now, it can’t be denied that this still stands as one of the blandest and most forgettable entries of its year.

I know I’m a minority concerning the fandom, but I don’t think it’s a weak year. I guess this feeling comes from the fact there isn’t an “immediate winner”, but there are several entries I think would make good winners with the right presentation. But I agree Bulgaria is a victim of their own success here, they did so well recently that the first “meh” entry would be bashed. And this one is very far in style from what made people love Kristian, Poli, Victoria or Equinox. To make things worst, it was the 1st song to be revealed while… Read more »

I like how you talk about how much the contest has grown because that might actually be part of the problem. This does sound like the sort of rock song that we used to get in Eurovision in the late 2000s and early 2010s. I’m thinking something like Armenia 2013 is an excellent comparison for this entry. But, even things like Slovakia 2012 and Czech Rep 2007 are the same sort of examples of that kinda energy-free, tired 80’s rock that Eastern European country sometimes try to sneak in there. Those songs struggled then and I think it’s even harder… Read more »

Yeah, it’s exactly that kind of rock entry that wouldn’t make rock fans crazy and give non-rock fans the impression rock couldn’t succeed in Eurovision. Thankfully Maneskin, Blind Channel and also AWS (on a smaller scale) proved there’s space for rock in the contest. But it needs to be engaging and have some personality. Otherwise, people will look and see it just as another random rock song, as it happened to Bulgaria.

These guys are clearly talented and seasoned musicians, of course they can’t actually play their instruments at the contest, but their performances at the promo shows bring a better energy than the studio version. It’s just that the song is so plodding and average, too monotonous to qualify. Also reminds me a bit of the background music from F Zero X! (As did Turkey 2008, but that was much better).

I’ve long seen people describe this as ‘dad-rock’, and this term always seems to be negative and undesirable. A bit dismissive?

25. Bulgaria: I am ranking Bulgaria at 25. Call me overly generous. Unpopular opinion surely but like I’ve been saying since day one this song isn’t as terrible as people make it seem. Ok it’s an extremely mediocre and bland rock piece with nothing to make it stand out and virtually no qualifying chances. But you can’t call it bad. It’s by no means among my favourites but I don’t consider it as terrible as many fans are claiming. At least it serves a semi-decent guitar riff before the last chorus and offers a sound I am familiar with.

And if I have in front of me a very basic rock song and a very basic Latin pop or dance pop song, the rock song will be higher since I am more into the genre. The band was founded by a Bulgarian businessman who paid a few session musicians from all over the world to form a sort of eighties rock supergroup. The idea that he bought his way into Eurovision is just conjecture on my part 😉

I mean, it’s not the worst way to form a band. Not everyone meets at high school and just organically come together. Come to think of it, a lot of the great rock groups do eventually, when original members drop out, end up consisting of former session musicians. It’s just something that happens.
I do, however, agree with your sentiment about the song. If they had resources at their disposal and this was the best they came up with, that’s a disappointment.

This gets a lot of unnecessary hate imo, I think mainly because it was the first song released and it came from Bulgaria, who has had a pretty good track record the past few years.

It’s not as awful as people make it out to be, but it is mediocre, the definition of ‘average’ and will be forgotten as soon as we move onto the next song, but there is nothing truly terrible about it. IMP have experience behind them, so this will most likely sound much better live. 5/10

BULGARIA – After years of sending top-notch entries, Bulgaria has slowed down and sent this quite vanilla rock song. It’s probably the most criticized entry of the year, and I can see why. It sings about never being in a safety zone, but feels like it’s fully embracing it. There’s nothing downright terrible in this song. It’s not in my last place. The most underwhelming part is that it wants to leave an illusion of being daring, but if you are not 11 years old, and not living in 2008, this will probably not do the trick. It’s definitely been unfairly criticised but that’s probably because everyone’s had so much extra time to criticise it and it has come from Bulgaria, a country who even if they don’t always get everything right, always feel like they’re putting the effort in. When I think about it, you are right, there is an open debate. Both Israel’s and Malta’s lyrics can be seen as ”so bad they are good”, though. Super-campy, without any self-awareness. I bet that the authors thought they were writing the new Toy and the new Too Late for Love when they were penning these. Which makes it somehow even better. In a way, I love that the two are in the line-up, because they are hilarious. 😉 (of course, Out of Sight and umm… probably any other song for Michael are a missed opportunity). 😉

It’s not as bad as people say it is and it is not the 40th best song in Eurovision this year. It is, however, not a good song. The genre itself isn’t a problem. Brilliant review, Briekimchi! It’s not the worst song of the year, but it’s in bottom 5. There’s very little spark to it. I also don’t mind the genre. While I love both soft-rock and punk-rock, what Bulgaria and Denmark are doing this year feels underwhelming and not like representative examples of their genres. Bulgaria – This is kinda a weird one, because there are some somewhat decent bits in the song. Ronnie Romero’s voice goes from “yeah this is okay” to “this is so cringey” real fast, and the melodic bridge is just too much. I understand they’re a prog rock band but it just doesn’t work in this era of Eurovision. Love the guitar solo, though. That’s about it. 3/10
