Buongiorno, Torino! After months of anticipation, Eurovision 2022 rehearsals start today in Italy. Over the course of the day, we’ll see nine countries form semi-final one take to the Turin PalaOlimpico stage for their first rehearsals ahead of the live show in May. Will the favourites deliver, or will we be left wanting more?

Listed below are the countries having their first rehearsals today. All times are listed in CEST (BST + 1).

  • 10:00 – 10:30 Albania: Ronela Hajati “Sekret”

  • Wide shots of the first rehearsal
  • A short interview about their first performance

As always, we’ll have individual posts for each rehearsal here on wiwibloggs. You’ll be able to read our thoughts on the rehearsal and find out how each country chose to stage their entries.

And, of course, we’re livestreaming direct from Turin, so make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel and keep an eye on wiwi.tv to hear our first reactions!

Eurovision 2022: Press Meet & Greet times

HEY! What’d I miss from 1991? I didn’t watch that contest. Did they have all kinds of visible problems on stage, which revealed themselves during the live broadcast?

No, actually Toto Cutugno stripped naked on stage and had sex with Gigliola Cinquetti. You can just find it on:

There was a rotating sun who was broken by the Albanian delegation the first day and as this had a huge success among Eurofans (they have spoken over it for 30 years, especially the most toxic ones) RAI has decided to replicate it also in 2022. Other rumours said Toto Cutugno entered totally naked on the stage and tried to seduce Gigliola Cinquetti. Anyway, RAI has just loaded on their raiplay dot it streaming website the full original broadcast of 1991. I cannot write the full link here because my comment is canceled. So please go there and check by… Read more »

Alright, I will address the giant elephant in the room. If the giant structure doesn’t work, the best time for us to find out is on Day 1 of rehearsals. This is because it gives the crew plenty of time to sort it out in time for the broadcasted Semi Finals. Just imagine if the thing would have broken during one of the days next week instead. The early timing of the structure breaking down is a good thing. Now they just have to figure out if it can either be repaired, replaced, deconstructed or explained as a static callback… Read more »

It’s nighttime over there right now. Let’s hope they have a crew working throughout the night (the whole night if necessary) to fix the problems they have before the next rehearsals…

[If not, and they sent everybody home for the night, we’re definitely looking at a possible $#!+show by May 10. That would be unacceptable.]

The Italian scenography is truly something exceptional, never seen before in the history of Eurovision, The motorized sun was a plus, the scenographies of the past years were all static, at most of the simple LED panels that rose or fell, in Portugal the scenography was even completely without LEDs. Let’s avoid making unnecessary dramas so as to have an excuse to attack Italy, even if the sun does not work completely (I’m sure they will repair it in record time) this scenography is still beautiful and original, the photos prove it.

Caro Sucof, inutile spiegare le cose a molte scimmie che albergano su questi sito. L’unica risposta è mandarli all’inferno.

But if the motorized arche hides the most of LEDs that’s a huge deal. I hope that it is false that it will not be fixed until live shows.

then we completely remove the arc and use the giant led behind it. so it will be a simple Eurovision scenography, boring and banal, like that of last year and past years! If you build simple and banal stages like the Dutch one, for sure you won’t have any problems, they are just a wall of LEDs and an empty stage!

Yeah. I hate these lazy stages that have become the trend. LED visuals all look alike at some point, no creativity whatsoever. I dont want to sound passéist but in the 90’s we had GREAT stages with actual elements of decor that would be moved around in a different way for each song to create a distinct atmosphere. Dublin ’95, Oslo ’96 and Kiev were absolutely brilliant. And the technical possibilities were so prehistoric compared to today. Nowadays it’s all about flashy, in your face crappy stuff and I’m afraid that without their ‘Sun’, the Italians will present something if… Read more »

I appreciate your comment. Here all are ready to spit on RAI and the architect Montinaro because they had the guts to present something innovative, but complex and risky. Of course, we could have another flat stage from the German guy with a full flat ledwall and some nice but anonymous props at the sides of the stage. With the delegations bringing big props on the stage to populate it each time. The last stage design I liked was the Austria’s 2015 one. Very innovative. With the suspended 3D balls creating visuals and the pipe stage at the side. Here… Read more »

I have 2 questions. I would be very thankful if anyone could answer them. If the archs are designed to create light effects (from what I’ve seen) and they’re in front of the LED screen, doesn’t that make it impossible to watch the background in its entirety? (Or am I missing something?) And how do they work? I saw a little video before the rehearsals started, some days ago, in which it seemed like each arch was carried by a rounded section of the stage (so they could move) resulting in many divisions. Are these ‘divisions’ under the stage floor?… Read more »

Yes its impossible to have a full screen background due to the kinetic sun. The kinetic sun is hiding 50% of the screen. I find it kinda odd tbh :/

As the kinetic sun as two sides, one with the ledscreen and another with light effects, that can also be intermixed as the sun is made of concentric coronas. So one can decide if they want to have an uniform ledwall, or special light effects.

To be honest the led screen on the backside of the kinetic sun is VERY limited. There are not a lot of pixels on it and the pixels are huge – we can see it used in Albania or Ukraine’s performances on the smaller arch. It doesnt look that good, it’s more like a prop … so it seems impossible to have a proper full LED screen as background for a performance 🙁

If you watch it by cameras close shots, LED may seems big and distanced one from the other. If you look it by far from long shots cameras (the ones at the opposite side of the arena) or by the audience in the arena, you will not spot any difference with the giant LED screeb at the back of the stage.

My dear. You start the accusations without even knowing. Are you a mechanical engineer? The kinetic sun was working 100% until middle or end of the stand in rehersals. Then, probably, one of the engines or any other mechanical part broke so this limits the span of the arches. Maybe to replace that engine takes a lot of time. Or maybe thay engine has been custom build and cannot, be replaced easily in 10 days before the first semifinal. Since the archs are not properly working, I am really worried about the artists’ security (I haven’t seen many people talking about it). They are designed to move, so I hope they don’t move when they shouldn’t (this brings up memories about Gjon Tears’ and Senhit’ rehearsals last year; and in that case it was only a prop they brought on stage, and not a stage structure itself)

I think I have a valid concern. I’m aware of the fact that producers will do everything possible to provide security to each of the artists.
But in past years, we’ve seen some things not going well in rehearsals (like the examples I put, which leaded to some kind of risk and danger) and this year, the archs are apparently not working well (and they create a massive structure).
So I’m not saying at all that an accident is likely to happen. However, organizers should keep a close eye on those archs

First day of artists’ rehearsals, not first rehearsals period. They had stand in rehearsals and even more technical ones before that. Do not downplay the severity of the situation. The main part of the stage everything was planned around isn’t working. I don’t understand why are they continuing with rehearsals on a broken set. At best they don’t get to see how the thing looks on the screen, at worst they’ll have to scrap huge chunks of performances, redo camera angles and maybe even make new graphics. It’s a disaster

I would post a link, but I’m afraid my comment will get flagged for moderator approval.

This only proves that even if it took Italy 31 years to win the competition once again, they failed to deliver it back in the 20th century, just as much as they’re failed to do so in the 21st century. I’m furious. They were literally asking the delegations to send their staging plans based on the possible parameters. And these plans were literally a major reason to draw a running order. And now this nonsense of yet another drama. I hope it won’t hurt Monika’s and the other artists performances too much, but god dammit if Italy is going to… Read more »

Lets not forget how complex the stage is this year. Moreover last year the Netherlands had 2 years time to prepare the event (cos of Coronavirus) while Italy only had a few months. Anyway these are just rehearsals, there’s plenty of time before the big event and technical issues can be solved in time

Just came from Wiwibloggs live , the information says the sun is not rotating , not moving. the camera directors from many delegations are very angry.
And RAI please make Maneskin join to the live show in Turin , we don’t see the previous winner giving trophy to the new winner last 2 years

The Billboard Music Awards will be the 16th of may. Eurovision Final is the 14th of may. Is that clear? All this mess and nonsenses came out because it was written that Måneskin were in LA for the last 2 months to record their new LP. Måneskin will perform on stage and there will be also Gigliola Cinquetti performing at the final. Stop spreading false rumors.

I think I should start worrying
We haven’t even started yet but there are so many technical problems especially with the stage
The Netherlands and many other delegations were dissatisfied with their stand in rehearsals and Lithuania’s staging is impossible to be excecuted anymore
I’m really nervous about the production this year

don’t be so dramatic. we had plenty of issues in Israel, Portugal and Ukraine.

Thats not true, as far as i remember in portugal, only greece and denmark (about the detail of the quantity of “snow”) were the only delegations that complain

As has been the case in the past, these rehearsals can make or break a contender. A decent stage setup (CGI included) that goes well with the song and performance, and the artist will hold his or her standing. A setup that doesn’t go well with the performance, and the artist could very well take a nosedive on the bookies’ boards. A setup that stands out unexpectedly (like Cyprus 2018), and that artist will go from the middle of the pack to a top contender before the competition begins.

They started building the stage earlier than normal and they realized that they sun can’t move today? Can you guys imagine how stressful this is for delegations that were planning to use this? They literally have to change everything last minute. People need to be accountable for this

TBH, there is far too much going on with the stage, too many bells and whistles and too many things to go wrong.

Already some technical difficulties with the stage . Italian cliches in terms of reliability. Let’s hope this hosting doesn’t end up like 1991

So here’s what happened today at the rehearsals:
• The sun broke
• Ronela was injured by one of the sun’s arches
• Other rehearsals are delayed
Let’s see what happens next. Hopefully everything goes as planned and we get to see the other acts.

Yes, they had some problems with the sun but I think they will fix them as soon as possible. The rehearsals are also made for this!

They said they are unfixable and that the sun’s movements will now be very limited
For example Lithuania’s staging is now impossible to be excecuted as planned

Maneskin have been in LA recording the new album in the last two months. They are in Italy now. They had a concert in Verona yesterday. Additionally the Billboard Music Awards ceremony will be the 16th of may, two days after the grand final. Is that clear now?

Strange, Ronela didn’t seem too much injured when she did the meet and greet interview with Mario Acampa in the conference room. And she also tried to teach him how to dance. By reading your comment I would have guessed she would have done the meet and greet with a broken leg or ankle, in a wheelchair, or dead in a coffin. With people like you, spreading fake news, not even being skilled to cross check the info, I understand why the russian propaganda is spreading in western europe so much.

Crap. 🙁 Watching Wiwi livestream right now (5:10 A.M. NYC time). Stage broke (reportedly the rotating sun) while Ronela (Albania) was rehearsing. Undoubtedly a delay while they fix it.

Yes , she cracked the stage floor during rehearsals but it was fixed by TRT easily. After her victory , local newspapers captioned ”she broke the floor first , then her rivals”

I just saw a tweet about it. It says that the sun won’t be able to rotate fully and that there’s likely not enough time to fix it.
I really hope that’s not true because that would be one of the biggest failures you could have – a broken main feature. Fingers crossed that’s just another ‘Israel won’t be able to travel this year’ type of clickbait…

I think they will fix it. They probably said that there’s not enough time in order to giving too much hope in case of failure

If not today, they’ll have all night (the graveyard shift) to fix it before sunrise and the next set of rehearsals.

Of course. But I hope it gets fixed sooner if it is broken. No point in rehearsing on a broken set. Too many graphics and stage positioning rely on the arches.

The same account recently posted this:
On social media someone reports that a member of the Albanian delegation did not hear of any technical problems with the staging. It could be a controversy invented by journalists against Italy.
We await official communications.
