🇵🇹 Portugal: MARO “saudade, saudade”
View this post on Instagram
Rather than singing on the main stage, MARO and her five dancers gather on Stage B, which is located just in front of the green room. (You’ll remember that Eurovision 2017 winner Salvador Sobral also chose the remote stage for his performance). They form a circle, looking into each other eyes. This conveys the intimacy and atmosphere of the song, which is about the pain of losing a loved one (in her case, her grandfather). It also conveys how we can and indeed should lean on those who remain to help us celebrate those who have left us and the life we have left to live. This is a circle of trust and an engine to heal. MARO’s final run-through included fog at ankle-level, adding to the atmosphere of her presentation.
The Online Dictionary defines “saudade” as a Portuguese folk culture term for a deep emotional state of melancholic longing for a person or thing that is absent, common in Lusophone literature and music.
Speaking to Escbubble after FdC semi-final one, MARO said: “[saudade] is about longing, and this song specifically is about my granddad who is no longer with us, and was a big big part of my life and me. I’m talking about how much I miss him, and I guess paying homage to him”. (William)
🇭🇷 Croatia: Mia Dimsic “Guilty Pleasure”
View this post on Instagram
“Guilty Pleasure” tells an intricate tale of a possibly quite controversial topic. Mia describes being with a spouse but thinking of another lover in her dreams. She says “timing has never been our thing” in terms of them only coming in her dreams, which leaves questions about whether the this person is a real love in her life, or a past relationship that she is thinking about.
Given that she’s in a complicated love situation — mentally, anyway — it’s appropriate that she’s brought three dancers with her…perhaps to suggest a very crowded relationship, or maybe her inner struggle and turmoil. Her pink dress, which leaves me craving watermelon, has gone down a treat with our followers on Instagram. Besides praising the design, they’ve suggested it looks gorgeous set against the blue lighting behind her.
The song begins laying out what to expect, explaining the situation, and telling of the secrecy behind her lusty fascination – “Five nights in a row of dreams I’d never share”. Sharing with who? Well, she’s left with the “souvenir” of guilt, as she’s laying in bed with her spouse, and she is “with him until the death do us part”. She describes her husband as devotion, whilst the man she is fantasising about is just a “secret treasure” and the titular “guilty pleasure”.
Our Lucy is a huge fan of this. Writing in our Wiwi Jury review, she said: “Oh boy, is “Guilty Pleasure” drastically underrated this year or what? I’ve heard people say they don’t find it interesting etc., however I couldn’t disagree more. The lyrics tell such an emotional story of forbidden lust, set to the dreamiest melody I’ve heard this year. There’s something so sensual about the way Mia describes her object of desire coming to her in her dreams to then wake up next to her spouse.” (William)
🇩🇰 Denmark: REDDI – “The Show”
View this post on Instagram
Ida Bergkvist on bass, Mathilde “Siggy” Savery on guitar and vocals, Agnes Roslund on guitar and Ihan Haydar on drums. These fantastic four – brought together as a group by drummer Ihan and Danish music industry legend Chief1 – together make up REDDI, who won the Danish ticket to Eurovision 2022 back at the start of March.
“We’re all inspired by seventies music and rock in general,” Siggy told us at the London Eurovision Party, “we’re trying to combine the rock of the seventies with the punk pop of the nineties, which is a nice hybrid I think. It works. We’re all rock pop musicians and that’s what we like to do together.”
Given their bold attitude and outlook, it’s no surprise they chose to fill the stage backdrop with neon blocks of colour. They added some literal pop with on-stage fireworks.
“The Show” is an impassioned rallying cry to be true to yourself when others would doubt you. Turning your back on the doubters can be a challenge, but in the song REDDI insist it will be worth it in the long run, “I’m not sorry, this is all me, and I will never let it go, I will keep up with the show.”
As well as calling for people to keep up with the show, the lyrics also offer a direct challenge to haters too. The second verse, for example, reads as a direct rebuke, “You never followed and now you’re blocked. And now and forever, I’ll show you what I’ve become.” (William)
🇦🇹 Austria: LUM!X feat. Pia Maria – “Halo”
View this post on Instagram
Talk about getting literal! To bring life to their song “Halo”, LUM!X and Pia Maria have shipped in a ginormous circular lighting rig. This electro-halo gives off light and gives the stage an arresting centrepiece to help them stand out from the field. Flames and plumes of smoke add even more drama — dance floor on fire!
Pia has consistently struggled with her vocals during the pre-party season, so we’ll be interested to listen to the TikTok audio if the teaser includes live vocals. Hopefully earlier performances helped her move past any and all nerves.
Luca Michlmayr, better known as LUM!X, is only 19 years old but has a lot of musical success already to his name. The Italian-Austrian DJ is best known for his collaborations with Eiffel 65 member Gabry Ponte. In 2019, they released “Monster”, which was certified Platinum in Austria, Germany, France and Poland. His early success earned him an award for Meilleure révélation (Best revelation) at the French Fun Radio DJ Awards. Last year, they worked with Italian dance musicians Prezioso to release “Thunder”, which was certified Platinum in Italy. An electronic musician with connections to the host nation and with big home support – he has a lot to prove in Turin!
Pia Maria is even younger than LUM!X, at a raw age of 18, but has youthful energy to match. In addition to being a songwriter herself, she has a lot of musical theatre experience and spent three years training in special effects make-up. She currently works at the Tyrolean State Theatre in Innsbruck.
The song opens with the central theme of finding inner strength and collaboration: “Let me be your halo, cause we’ve been through hell and back in only one night”. The lyrics refer to Ancient Greek figures Hercules and Socrates to establish an image of inner strength, “We don’t need a Hercules to bring a man to his knees, philosophers like Socrates said find yourself, think on your feet”. Then the next verse flows through the theme of rising to challenges, “We can be the CEOs, yeah you already know, we’re not under control and no, no, not anymore”.
These themes continue throughout the song, with strong vibrant imagery of angels, “I’m stronger than angels, I’m fearless in danger, and I will bring dark to the light”, and stars, “we’re gonna be written among the stars, posing so we’re hustling young queens”. (William)
🇮🇸 Iceland: Systur – “Með hækkandi sól”
View this post on Instagram
No longer staggered, Systur now stand in line with each other, showing that each of them is equal in this sisterly trio. However, each of Sigga, Beta & Elín have their own style of clothing, meaning they can still bring some individuality.
The Icelandic team have chosen warm amber tones for the lighting, which very much matches the theme of the song – a rising sun bringing light at the end of the long winter.
The three Icelandic sisters have a long history with many different styles of music. They’ve released folk, pop, even EDM music — but always together, all three of them. They have released their music under many different names, but Eurovision viewers will know them as Systur, the Icelandic word for sisters.
The exact title of the song, “Með hækkandi sól”, does not appear in the song’s lyrics — which is unique to only Iceland and Moldova out of all of this year’s Eurovision songs — but the motif is still very clear throughout the song. The chorus expresses that feeling of looking forward in hope, as the three croon: “The darkest winter waits for the sun to ease away the longest nights with light. The darkest winter waits for spring to warm our embraces again”. (Jonathan)
🇬🇷 Greece: Amanda Tenfjord – “Die Together”
View this post on Instagram
Amanda is alone on stage, dressed in a flowing dress with a silver shimmer to it. She sits on a chair, with further fallen-over chairs placed around her. The focus in on Amanda, but the chairs provide a presence of other people who the Greek entrant might have wished could be there with her – corresponding with the lyrics about a dying relationship.
Blue and white is the chosen colour palette for the lighting, giving this a nice contrast from Iceland that proceeded it.
Amanda Tenfjord — full name Amanda Klara Georgiadis Tenfjord — is a Greek-Norwegian singer and songwriter. Born in Ålesund, Norway, to a Norwegian mother and Greek father, she spent parts of her childhood in both of her countries of origin.
“Die Together” explores a number of perspectives of a dying relationship. The first verse paints a picture of discontent, suggesting this could be the beginning of the end. This is emphasised as Tenfjord sings, “We don’t laugh anymore and when we cry we do it on our own.”
As the chorus kicks in, a different viewpoint is explored. Rather than allowing the relationship to crumble, Tenfjord considers conflicting feelings. She points out that “if we die together now, we will always have each other”. She promises to “hold you ’til forever, if we die together”. There is a suggestion that this relationship can’t survive this life but could thrive in the next. (Jonathan)
🇳🇴 Norway: Subwoolfer – “Give That Wolf A Banana”
View this post on Instagram
When something’s yummy does it set off sparks for you? Well it seems to do exactly that for Keith and Jim — the wolves from outer space who are representing Norway. Their rehearsal of “Give That Wolf A Banana” really came to life with fireworks at the end as they brought things home with their lyrics yum, yum, yum.
The identity of Subwoolfer remains a mystery. But fans have suggested the duo includes or at least has the involvement of everyone from Norwegian Idol runner-up Gaute Ormåsen to A1’s Ben Adams. What’s clear is that humour and irony underscore all of what they do. Their name combines the words Subwoofer and wolf, a melding of two specific attributes: the former a reference to the duo’s heavy bass sound, the latter putting the animal theme at the heart of their identity.
The group’s retelling of Little Red Riding Hood fits neatly with the pandemic. The Wolf (coronavirus) preys on everyone young and old — both Red and Grandma. But it’s Grandma who is most vulnerable, since, according to the wolf, she “tastes the best.”
Little Red, who we take as the narrator, knows there is a solution: “Before that wolf eats my grandma, give that wolf a banana.” (William)

🇦🇲 Armenia: Rosa Linn – “Snap”
View this post on Instagram
In “Snap” Rosa-Linn opens by saying “it’s 4am, can’t turn my head off.” The idea of insomnia driven by her incessant thoughts comes to life in the beautiful staging. She sits in her bedroom, which is covered entirely with Post-It Notes. These notes — on which people typically jot down their thoughts — completely surround her. Trapped in her head, she has no choice but to sing in an effort to let it all out. The paper notes resemble tissue paper or toilet sheets — suggesting the delicate nature of her emotions in a song about evicting someone from your heart. The performance finishes with the stage rotating.(William)
Which act are you most excited to see? Do you think we’re in for any surprises? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Armenia’s staging looks like toilet paper.
it has the lights and to me it looks ok
nut the delegations should at least have the choice to use the led screen ( which can be turned manually during postcards
also what I liked the most about Iceland were the light lol
ok apparently the sun can move throughout the show but not the performances for many reasons i cannot explain . I suppose after first rehearsals every delegation can choose between the lights and the led side. AT least I hope so
Let’s hope for it
So long as the lights and LEDs still work, and they are not singing in front of a black hole (for which, I’ll reserve further comment until the Space Man comments 🙂 ), I’m okay.
Is it just me or half of the artist seem bored by those bland TikTok sing along? They should have done it with those really willing to and not rush some poor quality videos.
The last two days have been a game against Italy and Rai; all social media are full of people complaining about our production and posting that this is going to be a 1991 experience part 2. As an Italian, this is just a nightmare; we’re so stressed to do everything at our very best, ’cause we all know that the eyes of Europe are on us. I understand your doubts, but please try to be more positive and avoide the toxicity. First, we don’t know exactly what has just happened so everything is only speculation; and more important we don’t… Read more »
Well official statement by rai would be cool, you know. You waited for so long just to ruin everything, kinda sad
Well, we have been waited for so long to have our chance to redeem ourselves – so imagine how afraid are we right now
Well after this year you are going to wait for a long time to redeem yourself again
Thank you so much for all your support guy. You’ve just really got what I meant
Are there discussions right now about how to fix the sun I. Stage or at least turn the arches to get the LED side visible on stage?
after reading the final descision with the sun and your comment , i felt my soul calming down
i decided not to stress again and enjoy it
Btw la stampa confirmed what will happen with the stage
Recently like today or a few days ago? What did they say about the stage?
I’m really getting frustrated with the stage, will it be fixed so that they can at least use LED side od the sun, or will it be stuck like that and ruin almost every performance
Why is Greece year after year so overeacted??? Is become really boring , i find not that special really ,but of course the fanatics fans from Greece ,always go to find it wonderful ,not nice more
nice grammar bro
also i was kinda offended by this as a greek but everyone is alllowed opinions
I don’t think there has been any overreaction to Greece tbh.
OMG I loved everyone today! Everything’ll go better than thought yesterday. My highlights are Croatia (Mia looks gorgeous in that dress and her staging is fantastic) and Greece (nice and fantastic staging and love that they kept the indie aspect of the entry too)! 😀
There is a little mistake in Maro’s part. It’s written five “dancers” instead of back singers
In the States we have mischief night where people string toilet paper across people’s houses. It will be forever known as, “pulling an Armenia 2022!” SNAP!!
Is it me or stage design looks just bad? Expected much more from Italy as a host.
Yeah, every performance looks cheap. Italy will not host for a loooong time after this.
Thank you so much for all your love and support.
Let’s hope they won’t
i like the design but the failure is…
Is Greece 2022 this year’s Bulgaria 2021?! Loved by the fan groups, exquisite staging, talk of winning, top 3 semi finish and then couldn’t crack top 10. At least Greece has strong diaspora.
As I’ve always said, the overall winner with the combined voting has always been between sweden italy greece and cyprus and greece’s staging being classes above the rest in this semi just proves this.
Kirkorov was never involved with any Greek entry
That’s correct..
He will go crazy if they win without him
Greece looks promising and it will go directly to my top3. We’re likely winner of SF1 and let’s see what happens in the final. Fingers crossed!
The dream team will never return to Eurovision due to Kirkorov’s links to Putin.
All today’s rehearsals are much better than yesterday’s. Is it a coincidence or did RAI fix some things about the Sun and the LED screen?
Anyways, this semi is getting stronger and stronger.
On that I will agree with you. He did take fans comments seriously but also remember that in most cases the song he had to stage was not wow so was hard to lift it up.. But I think Fokas after all these years is growing with the contest as well..
I agree he is not always recieving masterpieces
*COUGH* Greece 2017 *COUGH
also that failed mermaid trick taht year OH MY GOD
and please don’t say ‘m being harsh I’m actually Greek
Last year Manneskin if this year the Greek woman wins Eurovision will be the biggest mystery in the history of humankind
Greece this years has such a great song and a professional artistic staging, I don’t see why it could be a mystery for you.
Because the song is boring as hell and the lyrics dont make sense… They wanted to write something deep and emotional but ended up writing: if we die together now// wr will always have each other// i wont lose you for another… Is the boyfriend ok with this??.
Yes… that “each other-another” and “together-forever” rhymes make it so trite. I still can’t understand why it is so high on betting odds. This is so overhyped!
5 year old can’t understand the meaning
That is why you cannot make sense
Artistic staging means a few chairs knocked over? But wait they are very artistic because they mean blablabla and whatever…
All your comments are bitter and nasty dude.. Call the doctor immediately if not sooner.. ?
The Dream Team did get victories with with My Number One, with Russia and many third places with Shake it, Shady Lady, Azerbaijan etc etc. Is not nice to speak like that about creative people who dedicate their lives in music, dance and arts. Easy for us to judge seating in our couch typing and judging so badly artist’s work.. The true art of a troll sorry.. I am not defending the specific team it can be any creative team.. Sweden every year follows the same old recipe and send very similar songs and staging but don’t see us saying… Read more »
I love Portugal as a country. Saudade is ok but come on… I can only judge based on the pics but 5 women singing in a circle is not the WOWest thing in the world.
Certain songs dont need “wow” staging, they need you to focus on the singer, listen to the lyrics and feel the emotion of the song and not get distracted but other things going on around them, this is, in my opinion, one of those songs.
OK, I have a question. What’s gonna happen to the sun? Can it be fixed or is it a lost cause at this point? If it can’t be moved mechanically, can it still be moved manually so the LED side can be placed in front?
La stampa said it will be moved during intervals and etc but not during performances
The true underdog this year.. Will go up in the odds on Wednesday for sure top 3 if not win it all..
How do they compare?
Can you tell us about UK and Poland stand-ins? I’ve heard Poland doesn’t have any memorable staging. Is that true?
so you saw nothing, cause it is known tha Poland has 4 or 5 dancers on the stage, so I will be completely different than in NF
I love how authentic down to earth and anti star Amanda is.. True Indy pop artist.. Love her!!!
It also doesn’t hurt at all that she’s just insanely cute…
I think I’m in love with Rosa Linn’s staging! <3
Greece please be in the top 3
‘can you describe more of Greece’s staging? What about their floor? Also super lucky to have been able to be in the arena!
OMG Mia.. I am even more in love with Guilty Pleasure by seeing her staging and THAT DRESS.. Love love love it.. ??
I had a Tomachevi Twins deja vu after watching the Greek staging photos… And both performances were directed by Fokas Evangelinos. Not that creative or innovative as I read in many comments here.
Damn, just on based what I’ve seen so far, I’m the most satisfied about Portugal. What. A. STAGE! If they meet expectations, they may get my 12 pts. in the first semi-final.
By the way…
Yum, yum! A tasty, scrumptious first place in the semi-final for Norway, yum, yum! 😀
Haha
No
Well, just making suggestions! 🙂
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amanda born in Greece and then grow up in Norway.
I’m really glad Subwoolfer kept the staging identical to their Grand Final. It was already complete with almost nothing to change or add on.
Amanda looks so stiff and doesn’t have that charisma to win. On these photos anyway. But we’ll see in the semifinal. But Greece is a qualifier and a top 10 without a doubt.
Jealous much? Your comment is your opinion of course but come on.. Everywhere they say amazing things right now and you found to say that? Come on..
I’m not jealous. Is that all you can say about my comment? I don’t think Amanda feels like winner material. Before or after the rehearsal. I have that right.
You are talking about someone’s charisma judging from a picture showing them seating. I didn’t comment about your opinion about if she is the winner based on your thoughts. I just found your comment out of place and not relevant at all.. Bit childish thats all
But you will have to agree that the staging with the chairs is a bit meh… No matter how metaphorical still meh.
once again you really do not even try to understand the meaning
it’s ok it is really deep and some people (including you ) cannot understand the meaning
oh please
“Has no charisma” and ” Does not feel like winner” are completely different
saying that she has no charisma is untrue and shows jealousy but saying she doesn’t feel like winner material is ok
Learn English.
kinda weird that she doesn’t move and has only one expression in the photos ^^
Omg.. No I didn’t know… dah!! How silly.
apparently you didn’t cuz it was exactly what you comment…
some people run out of bad things to say and just use a random one
but each bad thing has a meaning
“has no charisma” can you justify that?
Hats off to Greece. The staging looks stunning based on the photos. Just can’t get into the song … so there’s is no vote from this end.
Greece’s photos all look so classy. I can’t wait to see the tv result to be sure how it all will look but I’m sure this performance will spread some strong goosebumps at the night.
I read that is not everything! It’s going to be a whole experience on tv with.
*with the visuals.
the performance itself is like, from a fairy tale, if it will be well shown on TV, Croatia has a good chance to advance to the finals
Croatia is my 3rd, I wish she will qualify and succeed in the final.
visuals look way better today, particularly for Austria, Iceland and Greece (so far).
ALRIGHT, I think this time that we (Greece) actually have a good combination between a decent staging and a great sing for the first time since 2013, haha! 😀
I’m more convinced about Greece’s chances now. Although we don’t have much to discuss about it, the staging looks simple yet promising.
The pictures look stunning. Obviously your guess is as good as mine for how these will all look the night of, but there’s a lot of polished-looking staging. Portugal in particular. They’re my favorites so it’s heartening to see that they’re already headed in the right direction.
the interesting thing is that if the original project had had the “black” arch with lights, as we see it now, no one would have said anything.
Well ofcourse no one would have said anything if it was always meant to be like this, but it wasn’t and that is the problem
That’s true but the since is once you spoil the fans with a special and fancy new stage construction you need to get it all together. It’s pretty unfortunate that they have this problem but you guys have to remember that there have been similar complex stage element even 20+ years ago that worked totally fine. There were arches above the stage even back in 2001 that worked without any mayor problems. The stage in 2006 with the collosseum worked without any technical difficulties. Same goes for the complex LED stage in 2009 and 2016. It is all down to… Read more »
I don’t think that 20 years ago there could have been 7 arches with a led part and the lights on the other, let’s not exaggerate with the comparisons.
Let’s forget the LED part and take a look at the Eurovision stage in 1976 where they managed to create several different stagings with the same elements.
?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=4bf41f275f4e3c525d10eab226c8e8dac177c358
These arches in Turin could be moving smoothly with better planning.
Fair point. We would be rather arching over the topic of stage design though. (Yes, I do wordplay.)
Maro without makeup wooow, she is a really different…Mia like a Disney princess…Interesting for now…
Austria’s staging looking LIT
ICELAND’S STAGING LOOKS INCREDIBLE, AN ATMOSPHERIC MASTERPIECE WITH THE RISING SUN (hopefully they fix those damn arches), I WANT TO CRY OF JOY! <3<3<3
Downvote as much as you desire, I don’t give a damn, I love both the song and the theme of Systur. 😉
The Greek Staging guys is WOWWW.. A dream was directed by the always creative Fokas Evangelinos for the direction of the Greek participation in this year's competition. Everything we will watch in the three minutes of Die Together, is a dream through Amanda's eyes, around which the direction revolves. The song begins in a dark scene. We only see Amanda who opens and closes her eyes according to the pauses of the song. The shots alternate around her. Then the shot opens and we see Amanda getting up from a chair. There are several chairs on the stage that seem… Read more »
That looks very nice. Still the song cant reach a top position in my eyes. But it will qualify for sure.
Everyone has different tastes i respect that.. It went up in the odds without even finishing rehearsal. Only Portugal and Greece so far today did that and without proper press in the rehearsals. Cant wait to see it on television i believe it will be a moment.. 🙂
… To go for a piss.
Can you just not spoil everything?
There are more to be revealed.. And i am just putting already public information nothing more.. I am a fan of the entry so cant wait to see the rehearsals on Wednesday..
Very funny your review… Greek performance is stunning. She is sitting down and opens and closes her eyes according to the pauses and then she stands up… Wow amazing!! (Ironic mode on).
Stop drinking too much beer not good for the belly and you keep going for a piss.. like your comment is.. for the piss (Ironic mode not on)
The Austrian staging looks amazing. They go for many different colours. I like that. In the press conference Pia Maria sang the chorus live and it sounded flawless. Austria a NQ? Never ever! at least in 2022 😉
Well then, they’re back in the game, thankfully for them!
Ella y sus dos coristas…porque ella sola…..sin comentarios
no coristas at the meet and greet
Until now i see QF to Albania,Netherland ,Croatia ,Austria,Lithuania, maybe also Norway ,for the rest must wait but i think Portugal and Greece can be in danger ,
Greece with that staging is sailing through, a strong top5 contender. Cheers.
Croatia is the biggest surprise for me regarding rehearsals so far. Song itself is a bit “meh” but everything else is just WOW. And that dress is spectacular!!
I got a 2021 Croatia dejavu with this comment… but I agree, the dress and the lights are so pretty<3
Let’s hope the history will not repeat lol. 🙂
