Day five Eurovision 2022 rehearsals are almost over. The penultimate act to hit the stage is Greece’s Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord. She performed “Die Together” inside the PalaOlimpico arena. What did we think? Scroll down to find out…

Greece’s Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord “Die Together” — Eurovision 2022 second rehearsal

Padraig: “Die Together” is a dark yet elegant ballad, so it’s only fitting that it has staging to match. Wearing a long-sleeved, floor-length, icy white gown, Amanda starts her performance seated centre stage. She steps up to reveal that the stage is actually a sea of chairs, with most of the furniture sinking below the surface. There’s also impressive use of LED. An overhead shot shows patterns flow from the seats and into the LED background. There’s also a silhouette of a couple dancing, presumably the two lovers at the heart of the song. Amanda’s vocals remain flawless throughout.

Thinking about the song and the staging. I think if the lyrics had some other characteristics that could have been taken for a climate anthem. And the staging should the had been referring to climate change. I can see her as white dressed Jeanne d’Arc in the midsts if burning forests. Then the song and performance would have been interesting and winning material. But now with this strange love story about death, her singing so seriously and the staging that is hard to understand. It doesn’t make sense.

The music and vocals are completely different if you listen through your headphones. It sounds 100% better!

My issue with this is that it’s not supposed to sound better with headphones vs speakers. Absolute majority of Eurovision viewers watch through their TVs where they don’t use headphones. I want Greece to do well this year but she needs to sound great through speakers as well to have a chance to win. As she is performing right now she will still end up in a great position in the final because it doesn’t sound terrible, but to actually win she needs to fix her slightly pitchy singing and make sure it sounds great no matter how you listen… Read more »

Well the point is that it is a sound issue and not her issue if one is better than the other. Needs yo be fixed. Mind you a played it on my TV and it sounds great.

I did watch on my TV as well and thought she sounded pitchy, but if it’s because of an in-ear issue that makes it difficult for her to hear herself then that explains it. Hopefully they’ll be able to fix it so she can give 100% with no worries in the finals.

For me Die together and Die Diepte are quite similar as regards lyrics but Die Diepte is a coherent package as regards lyrics and melody: lyrics are ‘dark’ and melody matches this tone and keeps it throughout the song. Die Together is another ‘dark’ song presumably about pain, suffering but the chorus sounds too jingle-ish. You dont need to speak Dutch to feel what Die Diepte is about, to get a feeling but if you dont speak English you dont know/feel what Amanda is singing about.

I find this song horrifying. Lyrics are literally about leading and pursuing your partner to suicide. What an awful message! Can’t imagine how this song sounds to a depressed person and what harm can it make to depressed teenagers.

Heheheh You must be the only one thinking that the song will drive people to suicide… What else will i hear in this forum.. Is about a break up and is a love song.. If we have to take literally all lyrics and the costumes of Eurovision there will be no Eurovision. You can be depressed if you like hearing it and when it wins come to Greece next year for a bit of sun, sea and souvlaki to pass your depression lolll 🙂

Can I ask how old are you? You clearly have t felt passionate love yet in your life or lived in any of the Mediterranean countries. The way you analyse this can tell that you haven’t. Greeks live every moment of their lives and celebrate life in extremes. They celebrate life, every moment even death that’s why is one of the most rich cultures in the history… It is just a dramatic love song. Talking about love, break up, hurt feelings and sadness. It can talk feelings during covid, war or simply breaking up a relationship. That’s the beauty of… Read more »

Yeah yeah i am 12… Again how do you explain the lyrics: if we die together now/ i wont loose you for another?… Passionate love is ‘wishing’ you and your partner to die so that you dont loose him/her for another.
. Passionate? Maybe. Love? Definitely not. Living afraid of loosing your partner and preferring to die instead is not love.

Was thinking the same about the lyrics too. She’s a good singer, the vocals are on track, everything is there with the song and melody but the downside is purely the lyrics. Its too depressing , too negative, too dark. This is not winning material.

Or killing him/her to have everlasting love in the afterlife… But apart from the lyrics the song itself is quite bland. I mean there is no impact. It starts kinda ok but then the chorus musical structure is soooo poor, so generic. It does not match the intro, it is like: we will always have EACH OTHER/ I wont lose you for aNOTHER. It stresses the last words of the sentence and creates a melody that sounds very childish. They should have kept the ‘dark’ melody instead of using such generic pop(ish) chorus.

You are trying to analyse rationaly an irrational feeling such as Love. It’s not going to work. Some people will just not connect with it. The majority should connect fine.

But the lyrics of a song are something rational… And therefore can be anylised rationally. According to you Amanda could have sung: you, me potatoes in the air with a bit of a horse… It doesnt make sense? Well it is about Love, it is irrational.

I don’t know what you are talking about. If you can’t understand the song, that’s fine. It’s not for everyone. If you can’t understand the pain of a breakup and the irrational thoughts to keep the relationship alive, again that’s fine. Some people do not understand it.

Irrational thoughts such as if we die together now I wont loose you for another… This is the kind of ‘irrational’ thoughts those who killed their partners and then commit suicide might have thought… No i have never felt anything like that.

I love it when I see so many people are passionate about this song. Makes me smile , even though the lyrics are very depressing. Is depressing a winning formulae for 2002? I really am not sure. I’m hoping its a no, but Greece is going to qualify for sure and it is a good song indeed . Winning material I really don’t know at this moment. Top 10 yes , Top 15 yes. Top 3 we will see.

I’m not making any predictions, but do the last 5 winners not prove that there’s no template for winning the contest, at least not anymore? Duncan, Sobral and Jamala didn’t have the most uplifting lyrics either, by the way.

Sobral was heart warming, I am not sure gloom is what people want right now. Maybe Jamala is the only winner that was dark but she was telling a story with a mission. Greece I don’t know – It is desperate and so don’t feel it. It still makes me feel like Greta Thunberg is on stage. But Greta has a mission about the climate. I don’t see this song has such a mission. It is a kind of personal but still dark. We will see in the final!

Another thing there is a poll on another Eurovision site that they had since 2014 and they only been wrong once, and then the winner was on second place it was Ukraine. Greece is not even in their top three neither Ukraine when Russia was voted number one. this year the top is very tight. They are 1 Italy 2 Sweden and 3 Spain . The last two almost equal. So it would be a very strange thing for Greece to win, but this year might be the year that is out of the ordinary. With Ukraine it is another… Read more »

This song is my favorite this year. I imagine the car ride through the LA hills sitting in the back and arguing with a lover who is steering and we feel bitter emotions in a beautiful cliff environment. I saw her sing with a boys choir and I loved it so much. And then this staging came. It’s the poltergeist with nuked chairs melting into the floor accompanied by a huge covid virus with thunder strucks, the mother of all viruses. And She scares me and it feels screamy. I used to think that song was boring as hell but clearly she has a powerful voice and it’s for the best. Obviously the staging has been very well rethought, especially the light effects so we may even forget that eyesore/dark sun in the background.

It might win the Semi (unless it’s Ukraine) and will place well in the Final.

I see this entry as rooted in Greek tragedies, finding elegance and beauty in darkness. I might be wrong, but my first reaction is that the chairs are either a tribute to Eugene Ionesco’s ”The Chairs”, or to the ”Empty chairs” song from Les Miserables. Both are literary tragedies about loss and loneliness, and would fit the narrative of this song perfectly. However, maybe Amanda’s personal inspiration lies elsewhere. In any case, it works.
