Marius Bear Boys Do Cry Eurovision 2022 First Rehearsal
EBU / Nathan Reinds

Eurovision 2022 second rehearsals are in full swing. Next up to the PalaOlimpico stage today was Switzerland’s Marius Bear, putting the final touches on his performance of “Boys Do Cry”. How have things changed since first rehearsals? Let’s take a look…

Switzerland’s Marius Bear “Boys Do Cry” — Eurovision 2022 second rehearsal

Padraig: “Boys Do Cry” is a sombre number, and today’s staging doesn’t do much to inject any levity. It’s all very dark. Such are the levels of darkness, that you almost forget about the broken sun looming behind Marius. That’s not to say that the staging is lacking. There are some nice effects. At one point there is a shadow of a little boy playing behind him. On another occasion, a broken heart is projected onto Bear’s face before sliding down to the floor. Choreography is kept to a minimum and largely consists of a lot of arm movements a la France’s Barbara Pravi last year, albeit significantly less frantic. Vocally, Marius isn’t quite there yet and his voice is strained towards the end. The whole package is rather slow and plodding, and it’s missing that special something that might inspire viewers to pick up their phones and vote.

So this is walking right into the Michael Rice and James Newman curse… Horrible outfit. Dont wear black and definitley not leather… It doesnt make you look slimmer or anything. Its such lazy work when choosing an outfit. Its not even cool…. But this might not be his actual stage outfit? I hope they change it… And for those that claim its a song contest… Well u r wrong: its a total package visual contest, not just a song contest.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. That leather jacket does no favors for him.

He is vocally very good, and deserves a place in the final , another song here potentially ending up 8-12th place in the semi. Juries will help him.

Although the song itself is classy (but rather boring and Disney-ish), the staging elevates it. I kind of wonder why Marius looks like that in terms of make-up. He is sweet and they made him look wild which does not fit the song at all. Good luck CH! C u in the final.

We should definitely give his or her makeup artist an award for making him look like the bad guy of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Oh NO! I can’t unsee that now. Ahaha! Oh, poor Marius. I hope he doesn’t take these comments too seriously.

From the rehearsal clip, this is beautiful. I think it’ll qualify.

Well, somebody evidently likes this entry, because people have bet on Switzerland to qualify in 9th place. Why? I have no idea.

Listening to this makes me think he’d have really great vocals for rock music. I just feel like that’s something he’d be great at.

Biggest surprise of the day for me. The studio cut did absolutely nothing for me but the visuals are exactly the right kind of cuteness and dare I admit that there might have been the hint of a tear forming at the end of the 40 seconds. I see a lot more potential in this now than I did last week.

Switzerland has taken the “toilet brake” title from Bulgaria and that says something.

I am sorry, but I feel like this will plummet further in my post-ESC review. I’m just missing a spark here. Lithuania and Netherlands will overshadow it. I like the old school instrumental, but something is missing.

It is a really good staging that elevates him
And the song. Very good indeed. I hope it will qualify. I am surprised!!

Who is this song for? It seems extraordinarily niche.

I suppose it is for Michael Bublé fans who enjoy being reminded that boys do cry. Am I being harsh? I love Marius outside of this song, honestly.

I think that’s positively hopeful rather than harsh 😉

This lacks any of the fun or charm of Michael Buble’s songs and covers.

This is 100% NOT qualifying.
Switzerland have sent some pretty decent songs over the past few years but this one just doesn’t do it for me. sorry.

We’ll see. I think juries will appreciate it.

The staging doesn’t look like it’s working.
I like the song more than most but it’s not getting elevated here (at least from this clip).

Okay, this is 100% qualifying

On a different note, quite a lot of Polish staging videos can be found on this clip from Polish tv: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7lcnNjlmfo

Dancers? Doesnt anyone know how to win Eurovision anymore? Ballads should never have dancers… Silly distraction from the song.

If slovenia sent this it would be on the bottom of the bets, it wont qualify.
