Benidorm Fest 2023
EBU / Corinne Cumming

The Eurovision 2022 grand final is less than one week away, the the Big Five countries — Spain, Italy, Germany, France and United Kingdom — have drawn their spots in the running order.

During their press conferences on Saturday 7 May, the automatic qualifiers — who are guaranteed a spot in the final — drew which half of the show they will perform in next weekend.

Italy, France, Spain and Germany will perform in the first half of the final. United Kingdom will perform in the second half of the final.

Eurovision 2022 Big Five Running Order

🇫🇷 France: Alvan & Ahez “Fulenn”

France will perform in the FIRST HALF of the grand final.

🇮🇹 Italy: Mahmood & Blanco “Brividi”

Italy will perform NINTH in the grand final.

This news was confirmed in March. Traditionally, the host country draws its spot at random prior to all other competing nation.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Sam Ryder “SPACE MAN”

United Kingdom will perform in the SECOND HALF of the grand final.

🇪🇸 Spain: Chanel “SloMo”

Spain will perform in the FIRST HALF of the grand final.

🇩🇪 Germany: Malik Harris “Rockstars”

Germany will perform in the FIRST HALF of the grand final.

How is the running order decided?

The Eurovision running order is decided through a two-step process.

First, the finalists randomly choose from a pot whether they will perform in the first half or the second half of the grand final. Then the show organisers will structure the acts in the most suitable running order possible, taking into a number of factors including tonal variety and the logistics of moving staging.

The only act whose running order position is entirely random is the host country. Italy’s Mahmood and Blanco will perform ninth.

Prior to 2013, the final running order was determined completely at random. This rule was changed however to avoid subjecting audiences to an onslaught of countless ballads or songs with similar staging all in a row.

Does running order impact a country’s chances of victory?

It is generally considered favourable to perform starting from a later position in the running order. Recent winners including Israel’s Netta (22nd), Ukraine’s Jamala (21st) and Denmark’s Emmelie de Forest (18th) all performed in the second half.

But winning from an earlier position isn’t unheard of. Sweden’s Måns Zelmerlöw (10th), Portugal’s Salvador Sobral (11th) and The Netherlands’ Duncan Laurence (12th) all performed in the first half.

The only running order position to have never produced a winner is the second place draw, often considered “the death slot”. But remember — there’s a first time for everything!

People will say and manipulate with data however they want to justify their beliefs. Since my country is in no position to win the contest, I present you the real data: 2021 (24) ITALY 2019 (12) NETHERLANDS 2018 (22) ISRAEL 2017 (11) PORTUGAL 2016 (21) UKRAINE 2015 (10) SWEDEN 2014 (11) AUSTRIA 2013 (18) DENMARK 2012 (17) SWEDEN 2011 (19) AZERBAIJAN 2010 (22) GERMANY 2009 (20) NORWAY 2008 (25) RUSSIA 2007 (17) SERBIA 2006 (17) FINLAND 2005 (19) GREECE 2004 (10) UKRAINE 2003 (04) TURKEY 2002 (23) LATVIA 2001 (20) ESTONIA 2000 (14) DENMARK Even if the number of participants… Read more »

I feel like picking the first half isnt even that big of a deal anymore if your one of the favs/do well in the semis. You’ll then just be giving the 11-14th slot which really isnt even that bad since weve had so many winners who’s performed then.

Channel should close the first half of the show, I mean in the 13th. Taking into account that the winners of the first half have been 10th, 11th and 12th, it is time for 13th.

Winners usually come from the second half of the final. Russia 2008, Norway 2009, Germany 2010, Azerbaijan 2011, Sweden 2012, Denmark 2013, Ukraine 2016, Israel 2018, and Italy 2021 have proven this. Since the UK is currently one of the hottest favorites to win Eurovision, with a good song and a good running order, they will have a big chance of claiming victory! Just… to make sure that Spain doesn’t get the number 2 position, OK? Alfred and Amaia performed 2nd in 2018 and that’s why they flopped hard – good song, bad running order. Number 2 is typically seen… Read more »

A country that opens a semi final never opens the final too. In general the country that opens the final performed last in it’s semi. I really hope it won’t be the case of Czech Republic. It sure won’t be Armenia, the song doesn’t have an opening profile.

As for Albania, I’m sorry to say this but whatever the running order is it won’t win. But a final is already a nice result if you ask me.

Spanish, Albanian, Italian and Greek -Eurovision fans have been very toxic and humiliating towards others this year, I hope all of you understand that this behaviour isn’t nice to anyone.

Let’s not insult others because they’ve got a different taste in music, but respect that all the contestants get some fans and attention!

Good luck to everyone!

for a few years I see that wiwiblogg is a non-neutral site. every year they have their favorite flood article interview notes on high. when it’s original they’re super execrable but when it’s a pure eurofan song then they’re the happiest in the world. at the present time what have made france this year is to vomit. they totally snubbed France that it was the selection via YouTube that it was the 2nd rehearsal reaction, the super severe note with a jury that hates original. I kind of agree and of disagree too, last year wiwi was very supportive with France from the beginning until the end, it can’t be like that every year, there are another countries too, but that’s true this year France is kind of ignored zbd unconsidered by the wiwi team seeing how they overhype Spain and Sweden, firstly not really coverage for the french national final, no reactions videos at all on the competing songs, Deban saying that Fulenn it’s not even a song but only a performance, Suzanne who gives a 3 to Fulenn, today no reaction about France… Read more »

spain is really just a performance. Chanel is a 10 her song about a 4. Slomo is nothing without Chanel’s performance. Fulenn is much better composed and the song stands on it’s own. People liked fulenn from the beginning. Most people were luke warm on slomo until they saw Chanel perform it.

They didn’t turn in their live stream until Spain. I wouldn’t say they’ve hyped UK at all it’s mostly bops like Albania, Ireland, Spain, Austria and Czech Republic. I found William’s interview with Sam earlier a bit fake and pretentious (from him, not Sam).

Maybe there is a little tiny possibility that they are not talking so much about France this year just because it is NOT a potential winner? I wondet.

A warning for whoever is assigned the 13th spot (the middle) in the Grand Final: The last time (2011) there were 25 in the final (because Germany won the year before), Switzerland’s Anna Rossinelli was 13th in the order, and finished last in that final. Whoever is given the 13th spot next week–and is a contender to finish in the top-half–had better be as sharp as a knife on stage to avoid the same fate.

Did you read the end of this article by Oliver, “There’s a first time for everything” and as Eurovision is unpredictable we can have a winner performing 1st, 2nd or 13th this year like that all the cliches, prejudices and nonsenses about the running order and these particular places among the eurofans will explode and disappear for a long time. Each year is different, in 2011 it was like that for the 13th performers, this year it will be different.

If Lithuania qualifies, they are coming at spot n. 2, and finish ing dead last.
Germany is finishing second last
France is ending 17-22 at best
Spain 8-13
Italy 4-7
UK is going to take lot of jury votes, but will audience voze for them. Nah. Still anywhere 3-10

Finland is a NQ
Estonija is a NQ
Netherlands 15-20 in the final

There are not many uptempo songs this year so the logical thing to do is to place those acts in between the others and not at the beginning or the end. Not that anyone cares, but I will stop visiting Wiwibloggs. This is seriously one of the most toxic communities I’ve ever seen anywhere on the internet (and the bar is high). The completely unfettered aggressivity, personal attacks against artists and other fans, and sometimes racism make me feel really uncomfortable, and the total lack of moderation can only mean that this behavior is supported by Wiwibloggs. Also tbh there’s very little interesting content (99% of the posts is rehash of content already posted elsewhere, the rest is mostly clickbait polls and bs reviews).

Also the quality of Wiwi youtube videos, livestreams and clear favouritism really put me off this year from them. Other journalist talked about booking 20 minutes interview with Latvian boys in Italy, they booked the room and were actually waiting for them with their Head of Delegations and as the boys were approaching them, Wiwi yet again showed up… Read more »

There is a difference between playfully “throwing shade” and aggressive personal attacks. The question for Germany is, how early will they perform in the first-half. If Malik is among the first 5 to sing, he could be in real danger of ending up with Germany’s third-straight blank (zero) televote scorecard; and if he is singing first, James Newman may have company. 🙁

I have not watched any rehearsal videos, but I hope he has a stage setup that will overcome that.

Last year wasn’t so hard to predict winner. They also put “Shum” very low and it ended up 5th on real show.

Between Malta, Switzerland, France, Italy it was unpredictable until the end, so it wasn’t so easy, they also put France very low last year and Barbara ended 2nd in the contest, I said they are not so irrelevant, I didn’t say they are absolutely right on everything .

It’s absolute nonsense. The absurd fact that Austria, Israel, Moldova, Lithuania and Latvia are above Poland and the UK is pretty hysterical.

Why? Be prepared the results the next week won’t be as the bookies have decided so why not, there’s nothing absurd or a nonsense here, which is absurd is to think that it couldn’t happen at all because of the schemas the eurofans have in their brain since weeks now because of these bookmakers. What if Norway perfer Moldova and Austria over the Uk and Poland, it’s written nowhere that people have to like and vote for them absolutely, even if I personally like them but everybody is not obliged to think the same.

The issue with Austria being rated high in these polls is Pia Maria cannot sing and the backing singer was singing her main vocal at times. Judging the studio version of Halo is inaccurate. There were people in the press room who moved away from the TV speakers when she performed and William (who likes Halo) said it was terrible.

As I already said, she is a good singer but the song is hard to sing, sometimes people and even William don’t respect the artists, but anyway the D-day it will look and sound good on tv, that’s the most important thing. And some people in this press room I really don’t know what they are doing here so I don’t care a lot of their reactions most of them are biased, some examples sorry for these countries but greek people going crazy in the press room when Amanda or Andromache are doing their rehearsals, the same for polish people… Read more »

Hmm, I was expecting the half draws to be a little more equal (or as equal as you can with five prequalifiers). I guess I was expecting three in the first half and two in the second half. Being the only Big Five country in the second half, the UK now has a greater chance to get a high result for the first time in a long time, however it depends on what gets sorted by the 20 qualifiers.

I forgot to add this, but I hope Germany doesn’t get stuck with the number 2 slot but again that depends on what gets sorted with the 20 qualifiers. All I can say is good luck to everyone.

Assuming we qualify that is. If we qualify I think Israel would work as an opener. I think Czech & France would too.

I totally disagree that France should open the final. The performance is dark and not something the grand final should begin with. Spain would be much better opener.

Since when does a contender for the win open the show in recent years? I mean we would still get a top 10/top 5 but like if Chanel’s performance is as strong as the press says, the rest of the performances are gonna look bland after Chanel.

these are my thoughts/wishes:
France: opens
Germany: around 5-6
Italy: at 9th
Spain: closing the second half
UK: literally anywhere in the second half is good for them they definitely needed this/got very lucky

I honestly wanted Chanel to close the show, but let’s be real, she can slay and win from any position at this point. Best performance ever in history of ESC!

Unpopular opinion: My dream ever since Achille was chosen for San Marino is for him to open the Eurovision final in Italy… with a banger in Italian. I am not even sure if he will go through — I hope so, because it is one of my favourite songs this year —, but I think it would be a nice little touch. He is such an amazing performer.

I think he will make the final, the song is great, the staging, the energy and a.k.a the whole performance has been elevated, Achille slays vocally – and Italian audience will support him. It’s not my favourite, but I like the song more and more. And I certainly respect every person who wanted that much to compete at Eurovision

No female vocalist has ever done well in the tele vote when they have been on early. France and Spain are now out of contention and will probably miss the top 10.

Looking into it, I’m actually surprised how rare it is in the last couple of years. Still:

Russia 2021 (5th in the final r.o., 8th on televote)
Estonia 2018 (6th in the final r.o., 9th on televote)
Lithuania 2018 (4th in the final r.o., 10th on televote)

It’s probably because producers put all the stronger ones in a better position. 2012 might be the last good measure, before the new system came in.

All these comments with Spain to open the show, are you serious? Like it or not Chanel is one of the favorites this year, since 2013 every opener act has been decent but without the prospect to win or at least get top3. We don’t know the qualifiers, but for sure it will be something safe like Armenia, Cyprus or Czech Republic

Cyprus can’t open the show 2 years in a row and anyway the song this year doesn’t really fit a classic opener. And Cyprus 2021 was also in 5th position in the betting odds 5 days before the final…so also a favorite.

They can always let Germany open the show. I know it’s not a banger, but it might give him *some* push unlike if he was 2nd or 3rd. That way he might end-up 19th or so… Maybe? Chanel should perform 11th or 12th.

The bookies and the market are trolling us this year, it’s a mess, never seen so few moves since years after all the 2nd reheasals, only the Uk a little bit, there’s no real hype this year from the betters I guess and the bookies are lost, I don’t know but the thing I know is that they underestimate too much some countries like Albania, Azerbaidjan, Finland, France, Australia, Czech Republic, Austria. It means that there are no many bets on these countries so the bookies don’t care to put high odds on them they don’t risk anything but it… Read more »

Arrff her 2nd rehearsal was not bad and the final product will look and will sound good the D-day I’m sure so I still think they can do very well, she can sing she is a good singer but this song is so hard to sing, however their song has very much appeal, this eurodance sound works and it’s already an hit in some countries, like in France you can hear it in the biggest radios in this moment.

I would add that by putting high odds on countries, they insinuate they can’t win so like that the betters are not interested by putting a bet on it. Strategy strategy. Money money, 😉 Now the bookies react according to what at this point of the pre contest? The big biased reactions in the press room from some delegations, no not at all, the press poll, no not at all. Remember when Madame Monsieur in Lisbonne was tipped as 2nd or 3rd to win after the rehearsals and were 12th out of the top 10, remember when Bilal was 3rd… Read more »

That’s what I was thinking too, the odds have barely moved after the rehearsals this year when usually there are some songs emerging like Portugal 2017, Cyprus 2018, Australia 2019, Ukraine 2021, even France 2019 suddenly came 2nd at some point after the 1st rehearsal.
Betting odds are also bad when it comes to the jury winner like in 2018/2019 or even 2021 when Switzerland fall back after the rehearsals.

True for Switzerland last year too, the jury winner moreover and for Bulgaria too but the opposite after her rehearsal big moves in the bookies she was 3rd if I remember well with low odds but ended 11th at the end.
