How is the running order decided?

The Eurovision running order is decided through a two-step process. First, the finalists randomly choose from a pot whether they would perform in the first half or the second half of the grand final. Producers then arrangeed the acts considering two main criteria (1) creating an interesting show (aka, mixing up genres and the visual flow and feel of the show) and (2) practicalities (like how long it will take to construct and deconstruct various stage props).

Does running order impact a country’s chances of victory?

It is generally considered favourable to perform from a later position in the running order. Several recent winners performed in the second half of the show, including Italy’s Måneskin (24th in 2021), Israel’s Netta (22nd in 2018), Ukraine’s Jamala (21st in 2016) and Denmark’s Emmelie de Forest (18th in 2013).

But winning from an earlier position isn’t unheard of. Sweden’s Måns Zelmerlöw (10th), Portugal’s Salvador Sobral (11th) and The Netherlands’ Duncan Laurence (12th) all performed in the first half.

The only running order position to have never produced a winner is the second place draw, often considered “the death slot”. But remember — there’s a first time for everything!

What do you think? Are you happy with the grand final running order? Let us know in the comments below.

UK 22. Year 2022 and winner. Nice. This year my top 3:
UK
Italy
Sweden

Last year my top 3:
Italy
France
Switzerland
(I posted this list on may articles last year)

One must not forget that the United Kingdom is usually overestimated in the odds compared to the end result.
But in any case, it will probably go better for them than what the country has done for a long time in Eurovision

You live in a delusion if you think:

  1. Ukraine will win televote.
  2. Ukraine will not win jury vote.
  3. People will appreciate UK and Spain as much as the bubble does.
  4. Poland will not be seen as boring after two male ballads.
  5. Italy will win again.
  6. Italian broadcaster is happy to host again next year.
  7. Spain is not heard and seen before.
  8. Jury won’t kill Norway.
  9. Somebody will remember France by the end of the evening.
  10. Greece will do well with televote despite suicidal and gloomy lyrics.
  11. ”Hold Me Closer” would qualify if it was Georgian or Montenegrin song.

Ukraine can win the televote, they probably did in the semi and could in the final Ukraine can win the jury vote sure (Only for political reasons…) The televote for UK and Spain could actually be very good. It can also be just ok. We shall see. Poland’s song stands on it’s on two feet. If people don’t respond to it after two ballads, they would not have responded in any other case Italy won’t win again yeah They def aren’t. This year there’s a massive ammount of hateful comments, it makes it hard to believe that a community like ours has gone in the wrong direction. Many artists have previously expressed that the Eurovision fans are the reason for not participating, we should all remember to behave a lot better!

I don’t care who wins tomorrow night, but no matter who it would be, I won’t be spreading hateful comments.

I mean, this year, the toxicity levels of *SPECIFIC* Spanish people (to be 100% fair, around 30-40 certain individuals are the ones that cause the main problems) against other entries have gone over the ceiling on media like Youtube, Twitter or Instagram (aka, the big-three). At least, however, I can aknowledge that there doesn’t seem to be many of those people here, this site thankfully seems to attract almost exclusively the Spanish fans that are respective towards all artists.

I made a YouTube playlist of the semifinal performances plus big 5 in the Final running order and watched it through. It was actually a very good show nearly all the songs complemented each other except having Australia UK and Poland together. Even though there are differences in song styles I felt the 3 strong male singers cancelled each other out losing their usual impact. Breaks between songs will help but it has lowered my hopes for Sam Ryder to just finishing left side.

Just despise these disgusting producer-led running orders, same incredibly predictable BS every single year, they always feel the need to give the favorable spots to the ones that are already favored, for some reason…
Guess we really got spoiled by results that finally almost made perfect sense last year, I’m afraid it’s already time to go back to cheap, mindless, artificial stuff like Spain, Norway, Poland doing much better than it has any business to while decent, genuine entries like Portugal, Greece, France, Lithuania, Iceland and so on continue getting massively underrated… Venting over.

It’s going to be between Ukraine, Spain, and Poland. Ukraine will prevail at the end due to their current situation.

Don’t know where you people are getting the idea that Serbia and the United Kingdom can win. Serbia was probably borderline and qualified due to the votes of neighbouring countries. The UK has a nice song, but it won’t have enough impact to break even into the top 5.

The running order reveals a lot in terms who did well and who did poorly. Here’s my analysis: First semi-final: Switzerland, Portugal and Lithuania probably finished in the 8-10 spots in the first semi though a lot of people thought Portugal would have done much better Norway and Greece did not do as well as people thought they would, probably finished mid-pack. Armenia and Netherlands placing suggests that Armenia presumably did better than people thought (probably in the top 5 or mid pack) and Netherlands probably finished top 3. Though placing Armenia after Norway and before Italy is an odd… Read more »

Portugal being 3rd doesn’t mean it finished 8-10 in the semifinal. Douwe Bob and Lake Malawi both finished top5 in their semifinal, the latter actually finished 2nd, and they performed 3rd. I don’t think it’s a good running order for us (we won’t be getting a good televote) but I also don’t agree this means it didn’t do well in the semifinal. I don’t even think the producer knows who won and who struggled to qualify.

Spanish eurofans, in the end, are all bark no bite. They make a lot of noise, but when the moment of truth arrives, they are more about attacking their own delegation than being rude to others.

if malta, cyprus and san marino were such masterpieces as you say, they would have easily surpassed finland and romania in terms of the votes, since these last two are so disgraceful songs.. clearly this isn’t the case. the vocals for cyprus were just not it, i don’t even remember malta’s performance and san marino is not everyone’s cup of tea…just like romania and finland are not yours. but isn’t this the whole point of this contest? please just stop being disrespecful with these rude comments and support the ones you like.

Or ot could be that eurovision fans voted for who they wanted to see again. Maybe? What is someone’s trash is another person’s treasure.

Another word for that is block voting mate. romania benefitted from having a few spanish words in it, somehow having a few spanish words seems to guarantee you good points from spain and finland wouldn’t have qualified without their block voting points from sweden estonia.

Italian, here!
For several reasons I honestly think my Country has 0 chances of victory.
But really don’t mind, we did last year!
That said, I found it pretty unfair to write that Ukraine would possibily win just because of the terrible situation they’re experiencing over there.
I actually like a lot their tune, along with Sweden’s and Norway’s.

Dynamism left the chat. Pause after Portugal to install Finland’s staging, pause after Armenia to remove Rosa Linn’s one. Break after Ukraine then right away pause after Germany to remove the instruments. Pause after Belgium then pause after Sweden to install Sheldon’s stairs. Again another one right away to install Sam’s big structure and the final run. That running order….

Saw some information on Twitter from people inside the arena. Maybe not a pause after Maro. But certainly after Rosa Linn in 1st half because of the house. The 2nd half will be less fluid due to Malik’s instruments, Amanda’s chairs (they put apparently an ad break after Jeremie) , Cornelia’s circle, Sheldon’s stairs and Sam’s big structure.

ThorBeta
ThorBeta

Things we learned from the running order:
-Ukraine and Netherlands finished top 2 in the first semi.
-Sweden probably won semi 2.
-Ad breaks are there for a reason.
-Spanish and Serbian fans are delusional.
-We already knew all the above.

Enjoy the final everybody!

Well to be fair, most of spanish and serbian fans are just happy to have a great entry. On the other side, being toxic towards others just because they don’t like their entry is not okay. As long as there are boundries, I don’t see a problem with that

Oh I’ve said many times how happy I am to see Serbia and Spain getting back to the top 10, to get attacked by Serbian and Spanish fans, that can only accept that their entries will win. That’s delusion and obsession, in pure psychiatric terms. Share love, not hate, and enjoy the music!!!

PS. I like the Spanish song and I enjoy the message behind Serbia’s entry. What’s toxic are the obsession of many Spanish and Serbian fans in here. And yes I hate that with passion. 🙂

From televote perspective, I highly doubt that both Serbian and Spanish fans are delusional. The opposite, they have extremely high chances of scoring more than 200 televote points each, respectively,

They might or might not. They will both get their best results in many years but they need to stop getting obsessed about winning. That’s toxic fandom and doing more harm than good my friend. 😉

Just to kill some of our free time today, lets make some of our own assumptions and predictions about the non-favorites’ placements this year. For example, I predict Iceland will earn a Top-15 finish, despite the doubts of many. The song is phenomenal, magical and echancting, the three sisters harmonize their voices impeccably and this aspect, combined with the wonderful musical background will definitely convince a lot of juries AND televoters to vote for them. I assume a top-15 with the juries (approximately 60 points) and a top-20 with the televote (around 35 to 50 points).

I could see Finland gettint some serious televote support, but maybe out of top 10

Especially with thst running order, yikes…. a top 15 but not higher, since the juries will definitely appreciate the song more than the public, which may forget it in the process.

As someone wrote somewhere here, we are bunch of ESC fans and votes can’t be based on our expectations, we see this compaction with different eyes. Facts in real life voting are much different. I do understand that Spain and UK are favorites, but fact is, regular people during tele voting will never vote for them. It’s just a fact, I don’t even remember when Spain or UK been in first 20. Even with the Jury vote, I don’t think it will be better for them; when Bony Tayler did not make an impact for the UK with ten times… Read more »
