Ukraine’s minister of Culture Oleksandr Tkachenko has demanded that the EBU reverse its decision to hold Eurovision 2023 outside of Ukraine.

In a statement signed by Eurovision winners Ruslana and Oleh Psiuk (frontman of Kalush Orchestra) and Mykola Chernotytskyi, the director of state TV channel Suspilne, the minister called for further talks about hosting Eurovision 2023 in Ukraine. We’re reprinting it in full below.

“In response to the published statement of the European Broadcasting Union on the impossibility of hosting Eurovision – 2023 in Ukraine, we want to emphasize the following.”

“Ukraine does not agree with the nature of such a decision – when we were confronted with the fact without discussion on other options. But we strongly believe that we have every reason to hold further negotiations in order to find a joint solution that will satisfy all parties.”

“We honestly won Eurovision and have fulfilled all the condition within the deadlines for the process of approving its holding in Ukraine — we have provided answers and guarantees on safety standards and possible venues for the competition.”

“Hosting Eurovision 2023 in Ukraine is a strong signal to the whole world that it supports Ukraine now. We will demand to change this decision, because we believe that we will be able to fulfil all the commitments, as we have repeatedly [emphasised to] the European Broadcasting Union.”

“That is why we demand additional negotiations on hosting Eurovision 2023 in Ukraine.”

Ukraine asks EBU to reverse its Eurovision 2023 host country decision

Apart from signing the minister’s statement, CEO of Suspilne Mykola Chernotytskyi released another one himself.

“We are disappointed with this decision of the EBU. During this month, a large number of people in Ukraine have thrown all their efforts to fulfil the conditions for holding Eurovision in our country. Security is, of course, our first priority. The team of UA: PBC, state and local authorities did a thorough job and offered different options. It is a pity to see such an unappealable statement, therefore, we ask our partners to hold further negotiations.”

According to Chernotytskyi, Ukraine had proposed three different possibilities: hosting in Kyiv, Lviv or Zakarpattia.

These last two are close to the borders with Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, and have not been under continuous attacks during the war.

Eurovision’s organising body the European Broadcasting Union has confirmed that Ukraine will not host the 2023 contest. In a statement released on Friday 17 June, the EBU said that discussions will now begin with the United Kingdom.

What do you think about this decision? Should the EBU reconsider their decision? Let us know in the comment section below!

LOL @ Ukraine. They showed a Eurovision presenter broadcasting from a bunker and now they’re saving it’s safe to host the whole thing there? Get out of here.

Ukraine is really overestimating safety of their own country. No matter how many safety measures you put into place, a warzone is still a warzone. People don’t want to run to the bunker in the middle of the show. It’s not that hard to understand.

And what’s wrong there? Graham Norton is a broadcasting legend and a bridge between the Eurovision world and casual saturday night viewers for his grand final commentary. He was arguably at his best this year, not only cause UK got their best result during his tenure but he also explained the meaning and message behind many entries including Serbia (which many Eurofans feared he would mock) I can see him doing what Terry Wogan did in 1998 being a dual host and commentator. Appearing in first 10 minutes then into his commentary box for all performances then back out on… Read more »

This is sttarting to be irritating. Can they put their feet on the ground and focus on the war at home? Let’s be real: they aren’t able to host it in Ukraine because they are in war. Period. I’m starting to believe they are doing it because of the spotlight and the money they would receive and using the fuss as a smokescreen to hide the population from what’s going on. I’m very disappointed on how Ukrainian officers and the broadcaster are managing the win tbh. I could also imagine Ukraine withdrawing because they aren’t allowed to host. While I holehearteadly like UA to host, they need to be realistic. Also, EBU should be realistic as well. Getting such PR early this summer instead of ironing out all the details with UA seems pathetic.

While they emphasise that the production needs months of preparing, it can be done otherwise. Long gone are the Swedish money-milking people around.

In the end, UA deserves this, but we all know that it is impossible.

And seeing the comments below this article I am more than sure that I don’t want to be part of the toxic fandom.

The victim blaming in this comment section is an utter mess. Suspect a few folks here will be getting a paycheck from the Kremlin in the coming days… Ukraine never asked to be invaded, or to have its people become victim of disgusting war crimes and actions that border on genocide. The aggressor here is Putin’s Russia. None of this would have happened if Russia had simply respected the right of its neighbor to exist. The situation for ESC in this is far from ideal. Ukraine won. I’m calling it now, Ukraine will somehow take this as offensive and withdraw “I hope so”, like a child throwing a tantrum because he does not get what he wants.
Thinking that you can host an large-scale event especially at this time is the definition of DELUSIONAL.

We can also see this hyterican “demand”

Also from what we see on tv their president is with head in clouds and very off with reality.

All in total very childish attitude from Ukraine officials. An from that reaction it is obvious that their victory was not was not quite fair thing on which EBU should be proud of. Pure and bare sypathy victory.

I’d say they already know they can host this large scale event, but their pride, nationalism and need of attention to remain under the spotlight won’t let it go. We are already helping Ukraine in a lot of areas, I believe they should just focus in winning the war and end it as quick as possible. These are banal efforts trying to hide the truth of what’s going on. From the moral compass of my own, winning a contest because of the sympathy votes is far from winning it “honestly”. Additionally, I find this very careless and arrogant to demand +40 delegations to risk their lives and, HONESTLY, mental well-being just for the sake a competition to be held in a war devastated country. You would say, the war is not happening in all of Ukraine, Western Ukraine is especially untouched by the war so they could host it in Lviv, for example. Well then, tell this to those 5 million Ukrainians who fled from Ukraine instead of relocating… Read more »

Exactly, enslaving Europe with the only thought 24/7. We’re not yet finished with the pandemic crisis, but experiencing also the energy crisis at the same time. It’s very much likely that soon we will experience the food and real estate crisis as well, which may all lead to the “amazing” 2007-2008 economic crisis origins. And yet, all we hear about is Zelensky demands, Zelensky asks, Zelensky warns, Zelensky mocks, Zelensky… It gets tiring especially with a record high inflation and the question rather “Do I buy bread or should I pay electricity bills?” instead of “Do I donate to Ukraine… Read more »

5 million Ukrainians have fled their country, but sure, you expect European artists and their team to happily fly to Ukraine for two weeks and perform at the biggest music festival in the world. It’s just not going to happen. You shouldn’t even want this, even if you’ve won the war come May (let’s hope so) there’s a million better things to spend your money on than hosting this event. I understand it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but let’s be realistic.

The UK has every right to host the show – Sam Ryder was runner-up and the jury winner, The UK is one of The Big Five as well as the most experienced Eurovision country. And unlike Ukraine at the moment The UK can guarantee safety of workers, audience, tourists and contestants.
One would argue that Ukrainian politicians have more pressing issues to deal with rather than questioning EBU decisions….

In an ideal world, yes, Ukraine should host. But, they can not guarantee anyone’s safety, even they’re own. No one knows if Russia or some rogue military commander will attack the host city if Ukraine hosts it.

Plus, I highly doubt Ukraine can rebuild the necessary infrastructure (venue, hotels, restaurants, modes of transportation, etc.) that has been damaged or destroyed by Russia in time for the Contest.

Ukraine’s broadcaster should be focused on rebuilding once Russia is completely out of there. In the meantime, they should work on choosing their 2023 entry.

If you feel ESC is “..on a downward trend..” then quit commenting on posts related to the contest.

Ukraine is under constant danger now more than ever before and many areas in it were destroyed by the crazy Ruzzian dictator.

Ukraine cannot guarantee safety if they were to host the contest in 2023 and they need to invest their money to help their citizens.

The UK are the runner ups so they should get the hosting gig if they want it, and they do.

Ruslana, Kalush and the Minister of Culture can complain all they like, the EBU has made their decision. Like it or lump it….What I find incredible and quite disturbing is how much political and diplomatic clout an 8hr TV music entertainment event happening in a year’s time actually has. Focus on getting your millions of refugees back to their homes, Ukraine!

No, the most of all need to send those teenage Russians troops back home and rebuild their country. Hosting Eurovision won’t help them with either.

Our weapons and donations can.

exactly, imagine being homeless and seeing your home bombarded while government officials want to spend money on a tv show. The audacity…

“We will demand to change this decision…” – are you having a laugh, Ukraine? Grow up.
